Ziguinchor

Aprox. 159,778 habitantesApprox. 159,778 people

Ziguinchor is the main city of the Casamance, the southern region of Senegal cut off from the rest of the country by Gambia. It sits on the banks of the Casamance river, near where it meets the Atlantic. A Portuguese trading post before it became French, it still feels different from northern Senegal: greener, wetter, with rice paddies and palm groves, and a strong Diola (Jola) cultural presence. It's the gateway to the beaches of Lower Casamance, like Cap Skirring, and to the river's channels.

Mejor épocaBest time

The dry season (November-May) is best: hot but rain-free. The rainy season (June-October) leaves the Casamance lush but humid and hard to move through.

PresupuestoBudget

Senegal is affordable for travelers. The Casamance is even cheaper than Dakar, with simple campements (local lodges) and low-cost food.

¿Cuánto necesitas al mes en Ziguinchor? How much do you need per month in Ziguinchor?

Ziguinchor is about as cheap a base as you'll find, but let's be honest: it isn't a nomad city. There's no remote-work scene, your real internet is 4G rather than fibre, and Casamance humidity from June to October flattens you. It works if you speak French, already move in the NGO/development world, or just want a slow, green, riverside life for very little money; it doesn't work if you live on video calls all day or need people like you around.

Your real connection here is mobile: Orange has the best coverage, Free works as a backup, and you want both SIMs. Fixed-line Orange internet does exist (ADSL and fibre in the central areas, roughly ≈US$35–70/month), but street-by-street coverage is patchy — never assume it reaches the house you rented; ask about the exact address before signing. 4G handles video calls, though upload is weak and it degrades at peak hours, so have a plan B for heavy video work. Power cuts (delestages) are real and get worse in the rainy season, so a big battery for the router and a power bank aren't luxuries. One more thing: there's no permanent censorship, but during political flashpoints Senegal has restricted mobile data and social media for days at a time — install a VPN before you need it.

CoworkingCoworking

There's no coworking scene as you'd recognise it: don't count on finding an open space with good wifi and a monthly membership, and if someone names one to you, phone ahead and confirm before you move — in cities this size these places open and close. In practice people work from home, from a riverfront hotel with decent wifi (buying food and drinks), or from cafés near the university. Budget for building your own desk at home — decent chair, fan or AC, a battery for the router — instead of a coworking membership.

Escale is the colonial centre by the river: banks, admin offices, hotels — the easiest landing spot if you know nobody. Néma has newer construction and a bit more calm, and it's where people who stay for months tend to end up. Boucotte and Kandé are big, very local residential areas with the cheapest rents and fewer services at your door. And if you're after the beach, a lot of the region's foreigners actually live in Cap Skirring, ≈70km away, coming into Ziguinchor only for paperwork, banking and shopping.

ComunidadCommunity

There is no nomad community: you won't find remote-work meetups or a city Slack here. The foreigners you see are mostly development, NGO, mission, research or tourism people heading to Cap Skirring, and they know each other through work. French is essential for daily life; you'll also hear Wolof and, very much alive in Casamance, Diola, Mandinka and Portuguese Creole from the Guinea-Bissau border. Spanish, almost none. The two most useful ways in are the Alliance Française and Assane Seck University; beyond that, hospitality does the work — you'll be invited for ataya and within two weeks you'll know half the neighbourhood.

Malaria is the serious one: Casamance is among the most malarial parts of Senegal and in the rainy season (June–October) it isn't negotiable — prophylaxis discussed with a doctor, a net and repellent, not "I'll see how it goes". That same season brings brutal humidity, mosquitoes and rough rural roads; March to June is hot and dry before the rains. On safety: the MFDC conflict has largely wound down and the city has been calm for years, but uncleared landmines remain in rural areas near the borders — stay on main roads, especially after dark, and ask locally before travelling inland. Practical stuff: there's no digital nomad visa, many passports get 90 days visa-free (check yours), and extending is a bureaucratic errand that usually ends up in Dakar; rent is paid in cash, often several months up front, with no lease as you'd understand it; set up Wave or Orange Money on day one, because ATMs here run out of cash or go down more often than you'd like; and anything medically serious means Dakar, so insurance that covers evacuation isn't paranoia.

Figures in US dollars and approximate, reviewed in September 2026, for one person. Rents move fast in nomad-heavy cities — use these to compare and budget, not as a quote.
