Dakar

Aprox. 2,476,400 habitantesApprox. 2,476,400 people

Dakar is the capital of Senegal and the westernmost point of mainland Africa, on the Cap-Vert peninsula, surrounded by the Atlantic on three sides. It's a vibrant, loud, creative city: capital of mbalax music, of Senegalese wrestling and of a booming art scene. Facing it lies Gorée Island, heavy with the memory of the slave trade. With good surf, beaches and a growing nomad community, Dakar is one of the most accessible gateways to West Africa.

Costo de vida nómadaNomad cost of living

¿Cuánto necesitas al mes en Dakar? How much do you need per month in Dakar?

Dakar works if you work for Europe: you're on GMT year-round (London's clock in winter, one or two hours behind Madrid depending on the season), about four and a half hours' flight from Madrid or Lisbon and a bit over five from Paris, with the Atlantic right there — sea breeze, surf ten minutes away, and a dry season from November to May that's genuinely lovely. It also works if you actually want to live in French and Wolof, eat rice-and-fish from a street kitchen and be the only foreigner on the block. It doesn't work if you're chasing cheap: for West Africa, Dakar is expensive — rent in the areas foreigners end up in costs about what a Latin American capital does, imported groceries are brutal, and traffic eats an hour of your day. And if you don't speak French, every errand takes three times as long.

By regional standards Dakar is well connected. Sonatel/Orange dominates and has the widest home fiber footprint; Free (the former Tigo) and Expresso are the alternatives. Home fiber plans run ≈US$30–60 a month depending on speed, and in the wired areas — Plateau, Point E, Fann, Mermoz, Sacré-Cœur, Almadies, Ngor — it's plenty for video calls all day; don't expect European fiber numbers, but do expect a stable line. Outside that belt fiber gets patchy: confirm the building is already connected BEFORE you sign, because a fresh installation can take weeks. 4G covers the Cap-Vert peninsula well and works as a genuine plan B; there's 5G in parts of Dakar, though don't count on it everywhere. Two honest warnings. One: Senelec power cuts happen (less brutal than the regional average, but they happen), so a UPS for your router and laptop pays for itself. Two, and this matters more: in 2023 and 2024, during the political crisis, the government restricted mobile internet for days, blocked social platforms and at one point suspended TikTok. That's real precedent — if your work can't survive going dark, keep home fiber AND mobile data, and know that in a tense moment neither is guaranteed.

CoworkingCoworking

There's a real scene, though small and tied to the local tech and startup ecosystem rather than to nomad tourism. Jokkolabs Dakar is the veteran — one of West Africa's earliest coworking and innovation spaces — and it's still a reference point for freelancers and startups; CTIC Dakar runs more as a tech incubator than an open coworking, but it also hosts people working. Email either one before you show up: spaces here change address, price and model often. Around them, smaller villa-style spaces have opened in Mermoz, Point E and Almadies, less branded and more personal; ask in local groups, because they open and close quickly. A monthly hot desk runs ≈US$70–150; always ask for a trial day, and ask two specific questions: is there a generator or inverter for power cuts, and does the air conditioning actually work in September. People also work from cafés and hotel lobbies in Almadies and Plateau, but café Wi-Fi is only trustworthy for email, not for an hour-long call.

Almadies is the foreigner default: the western tip, on the water, with restaurants, nightlife, embassies and the priciest furnished apartments in town — comfortable, safe and rather bubble-like. Ngor and Yoff next door are fishing villages turned surf zone: more laid-back, cheaper, with direct access to the water and to Ngor island; the best pick if you came for the ocean and don't mind a neighborhood feel. Ouakam, below the Mamelles lighthouse and the Mosque of the Divinity, is the fashionable middle ground: genuinely local, saner prices, more young people every year. Mermoz, Sacré-Cœur and Point E are middle-class Dakar: central, with bakeries, markets and the university nearby, and the best price-to-location ratio if you'll be moving around the whole city. Plateau is the historic and administrative downtown: intense and functional by day, empty and less advisable at night — you work there, you don't live there.

ComunidadCommunity

Teranga — Senegalese hospitality — isn't a tourism-brochure line: people will talk to you, invite you and introduce you to others with surprising ease. The filter is language: French is the official and working language, Wolof is the language of the street and of warmth, and English barely gets you through hotels and the NGO circuit. With decent French every door opens; without it you'll live in an Almadies bubble. The foreign community is solid but institutional rather than nomadic: Dakar is the West Africa regional base for several UN agencies, NGOs and correspondents, plus long-established French and Lebanese communities and many Senegalese who came back from Europe. The real social glue is surfing in Ngor, Ouakam and Yoff, and the events of the tech and creative scene, which is genuinely lively here. For Spanish speakers: the community is small and mostly diplomatic, but Spanish is widely taught in Senegalese schools and plenty of people have lived in Spain or Italy — it's not unusual to get answered in Spanish without asking.

Money: it's the West African CFA franc (XOF), pegged to the euro, so your purchasing power tracks the euro against the dollar — but you won't get surprise devaluations, which is a rare comfort in the region. Cards are barely accepted outside hotels, big supermarkets and Almadies: life here runs on cash and mobile money (Wave and Orange Money are everywhere — open an account your first week). Renting: almost everything comes through word of mouth or an agent who takes a commission, landlords ask two or three months up front, and the "foreigner price" is real — compare, ask a Senegalese friend, and don't sign on day one. Weather: the dry season (November to May) is the reason to come; the hivernage (July to October) is humid heat, mosquitoes and flooded streets, especially in the outskirts. December to February can bring harmattan dust. Health: Senegal has malaria risk — low on the Dakar peninsula, higher in the rains and if you head inland or south — and a yellow fever certificate is often required depending on where you're arriving from; sort this out at a travel clinic, not on a forum. Safety: Dakar is calmer than its reputation, but phone snatching happens along the Corniche, in Plateau and on beaches after dark; nothing exotic, just common sense. Traffic and the airport: getting anywhere takes twice as long as you'd think — there's a BRT line and the TER train out to Diamniadio, which help along their corridors but don't cover the whole city — and AIBD airport is some 45 km from downtown; leave absurdly early. Culture: it's a majority-Muslim country; Ramadan reshuffles everyone's schedule, and alcohol exists but is expensive and discreet outside Almadies and Plateau. Paperwork: Senegal has no digital nomad visa; many nationalities enter visa-free for up to 90 days, but it varies by country — confirm yours on the official source before booking. And politics: between 2021 and 2024 there were large protests with mobile internet cuts; it's been calm since the 2024 change of government, but keep it on your radar if your income depends on being online.
