How much do you need per month in Saint-Louis?

Saint-Louis (Ndar) works if you want a cheap, slow base with an atmosphere you won't find anywhere else: a UNESCO-listed colonial island at the mouth of the Senegal River, ocean on one side and river on the other, French and Wolof on the street. It doesn't work if your day is back-to-back video calls: there's no real nomad scene, formal coworking is close to nonexistent, and the internet handles normal work but will drop out exactly when it matters. It's for immersion, quiet and a low budget — not for infrastructure. For that, your base is Dakar.

Orange (Sonatel) is the operator that matters: fibre where it has reached, otherwise ADSL or a 4G box — don't assume fibre exists at the exact address, ask before you sign. Typical home plans land around ≈10–50 Mbps: fine for work and your calls, not for uploading heavy video all day. The weak point isn't speed, it's stability: Senelec power cuts and line drops. Orange 4G coverage in town is decent (Free and Expresso are patchier) and 5G is basically a Dakar thing. Always keep a plan B: backup mobile data and a battery or UPS for the router. And one honest note: during periods of political tension Senegal has restricted mobile internet and social media for days at a time (it happened in 2023 and around the 2024 election cycle). That's not theory.

CoworkingCoworking

There's almost none, and I'm not going to invent names for you. Saint-Louis has nothing comparable to Dakar's coworking scene. In practice: you work from your guesthouse terrace, from island cafés and hotels (you order, you stay), or you negotiate a fixed wifi spot at a hostel by the day or the month — there's no published rate, you agree one. Gaston Berger University, on the outskirts, generates student energy and some tech activity, but it isn't an open space for nomads. If coworking is a hard requirement, that's exactly the argument for basing yourself in Dakar and coming to Saint-Louis for stretches.

Prettiest and priciest, though plenty of the houses are run down, damp, and without air conditioning. Hydrobase, on the sand spit to the south, is beach, small hotels and a bit of surf: extremely quiet and breezy, but you depend on taxis for everything. Sor, the mainland (Ndiolofène and around), is where most of the city actually lives: far cheaper rent, markets, more dust and traffic, zero postcard. And Guet Ndar, the fishing quarter on the spit, is one of the densest neighbourhoods in West Africa — absolutely worth visiting, but not somewhere you'll be renting.

ComunidadCommunity

Small, and not organised as a "nomad scene" at all. What exists: NGO people, people from Gaston Berger University, long-staying French residents and guesthouse owners, plus travellers passing through. Spanish-speaking community: essentially none — don't count on it. French is the language of paperwork and work, but the street runs on Wolof: without French you'll genuinely struggle, and a few words of Wolof open doors French doesn't. Meeting people is easy the Senegalese way — you'll be invited to ataya and to eat from the shared bowl on day one; what's hard is finding peers who work like you. The jazz festival (usually in May) fills the city and is by far the best moment to connect — check the dates each year, they've shifted.

Malaria is real in Senegal: repellent, a mosquito net and a doctor's visit before you come, especially if you arrive in the rainy season (July–September), which brings humid heat and mosquitoes; the rest of the year is dry and dusty, though the Atlantic breeze keeps Saint-Louis noticeably cooler than inland Senegal. The Langue de Barbarie has been eroding since the breach was cut in 2003, and flooding has been a serious problem in Guet Ndar, with families relocated inland — don't rent at ground level right by the water without asking about the history. Renting is informal: cash, several months up front, no contract protecting you, and the "toubab price" is a real thing — compare and negotiate with a local in the room. It's a cash economy: cards rarely work, ATMs are limited, and Wave and Orange Money run everything, so open an account on day one. You pay in CFA francs, pegged to the euro: no runaway-inflation surprises, but also don't expect your dollar to stretch further each month. Senegal has no digital nomad visa; many passports enter visa-free for up to 90 days, but check yours and assume extending means slow in-person paperwork. The city is calm compared to Dakar — mind your phone in the market, skip the beach alone at night — but anything medically serious means Dakar, about 4–5 hours away by road: insurance with evacuation isn't a luxury here.

Figures in US dollars and approximate, reviewed in September 2026, for one person. Rents move fast in nomad-heavy cities — use these to compare and budget, not as a quote.
