Touba no es una ciudad cualquiera de Senegal: es la capital espiritual del muridismo, la cofradía sufí fundada por Cheikh Amadou Bamba a finales del siglo XIX, y una ciudad santa autónoma que se rige por sus propias reglas. Nació de la nada en la sabana como centro religioso y ha crecido hasta ser una de las mayores ciudades del país, dominada por completo por su Gran Mezquita. Cada año, el Grand Magal atrae a millones de peregrinos y la convierte por unos días en el corazón de Senegal. Aquí no se vende alcohol ni tabaco: es, ante todo, un lugar de fe.Touba is no ordinary Senegalese city: it is the spiritual capital of Mouridism, the Sufi brotherhood founded by Cheikh Amadou Bamba in the late 19th century, and an autonomous holy city that runs by its own rules. It rose from nothing on the savanna as a religious center and has grown into one of the country's largest cities, wholly dominated by its Great Mosque. Each year the Grand Magal draws millions of pilgrims and briefly makes it the beating heart of Senegal. No alcohol or tobacco is sold here: it is, above all, a place of faith.
