Thiès

Aprox. 320,000 habitantesApprox. 320,000 people

Thiès is Senegal's second city, about 70 km east of Dakar and well linked by road and by the historic Dakar-Niger railway, of which it was a key junction. It sits on an inland plateau with a Sahelo-Sudanese climate: long, hot dry months and a short rainy season around July-September. Its cultural fame comes from the Manufactures Sénégalaises des Arts Décoratifs, whose hand-woven tapestries hang in museums and embassies worldwide. Phosphate quarries nearby are one of the region's economic mainstays.

Costo de vida nómadaNomad cost of living

¿Cuánto necesitas al mes en Thiès?How much do you need per month in Thiès?

Thiès is one of Senegal's biggest cities (second or third depending on how you count, since Touba exists), about 70 km from Dakar on the toll road, and it works as a cheap base if your remote job is already sorted, you can handle heat and dust, and you get by in French (some Wolof helps more). It is not a nomad hub: there's no remote-work scene here, no Instagram-ready coworkings, and the foreigners living here are mostly aid workers, missionaries, NGO staff and volunteers in training. In its favour: AIBD international airport is half an hour away by car. Against it: if you need an international crowd, bulletproof internet and nightlife, your real base is Dakar and Thiès is a weekend at most.

Orange/Sonatel is the country's serious operator and fixed internet does reach Thiès, but don't assume fibre on your street: depending on the area what they install may be fibre, ADSL or a 4G box, and the difference shows. An entry plan is enough for video calls; upload is usually the bottleneck, so don't count on pushing big files fast. Orange's 4G covers the city well (Free and Expresso are weaker alternatives). Two warnings that actually matter: power — Senelec cuts do happen, especially in the hot season, and with no current your router dies, so keep a UPS for the router and mobile data as backup — and politics: Senegal has cut mobile internet and blocked social media during periods of political tension (2023–2024), so install a VPN before you need it. And test the connection BEFORE you sign a lease.

CoworkingCoworking

Straight up: I'm not aware of a stable, publicly open coworking space in Thiès the way Dakar has them. There are tech initiatives and spaces tied to the university and to incubators, but they come and go and I won't hand you names that may already be gone. In practice you'll work from home or off the wifi at a café or hotel, and if you need a real office you'll find one in Dakar, an hour away, for around ≈US$80–150 a month. If coworking is non-negotiable for you, Thiès isn't your city.

Escale is the historic commercial centre next to the old train station: banks, ATMs and your best odds of a decent fixed line are here, and it's the obvious choice if you're coming from abroad. Randoulène (North and South) is quiet middle-class residential, with decent houses and apartments. Hersent, the old railway quarter, and Nguinth are more local, cheaper residential options. Grand Thiès and Médina Fall are working-class and very Senegalese: cheap living, but nothing set up for foreigners. Don't expect an "expat neighbourhood" — there isn't one.

ComunidadCommunity

Senegalese hospitality is genuine — teranga isn't a tourism brochure — and making acquaintances in your neighbourhood, at the market or at the mosque/parish is very easy; Thiès is also a university town, so there are young people around. The hard part is the rest: there's no nomad community and almost no Spanish speakers, and the foreigners here are aid workers, religious staff, NGO people and volunteers in training, usually passing through or already in their own circle. Daily life happens in Wolof; French gets you through paperwork, shops and work, English barely at all. If you speak no French, you're going to be pretty alone.

Without the breeze that saves Dakar, the heat here lands hard: March to June is brutal, and running AC spikes your Senelec bill, which is expensive for the region. July to October brings the hivernage — heavy rain, flooded streets, humidity — and December to February brings harmattan dust (bad news if you're allergic or asthmatic). Renting means several months paid up front in cash, and many contracts are verbal or barely formal: go with someone you trust and never pay for a place you haven't seen. It's a cash country: cards are barely accepted outside hotels and big supermarkets, withdraw at the ATMs in Escale and use Wave or Orange Money like everyone else (the currency is the CFA franc, pegged to the euro, so if you earn in dollars your purchasing power moves with the euro). Mind the transport: Dakar's TER runs to AIBD airport, not to Thiès, so getting to the capital means a sept-place, a bus or a car. Senegal is among the safest countries in West Africa — what you'll see is opportunistic theft, mostly phones in markets and at night — but it has had bouts of protest and political tension with mobile-internet shutdowns, so stay away from demonstrations. And the legal side: there is no digital nomad visa, most people enter visa-free for 90 days, and actually staying means paperwork and a carte de séjour, not hopping the border forever. Confirm your own case with the consulate before you move.
