Aprox. 967,677 habitantesApprox. 967,677 people

Port Elizabeth, officially renamed Gqeberha in 2021, is a coastal city in southern South Africa, in the Eastern Cape, on Algoa Bay on the Indian Ocean. It's called 'the Friendly City' and also 'the Windy City' for its constant breeze. It has long urban sand beaches, a British colonial past visible in the Donkin Reserve with its lighthouse and pyramid, and it's the gateway to Addo Elephant National Park, one of South Africa's great parks. It marks the eastern end of the Garden Route and makes a relaxed, affordable base for exploring the coast.

How much do you need per month in Port Elizabeth (Gqeberha)?

Gqeberha (Port Elizabeth's official name since 2021) is one of the cheapest coastal bases you'll find with genuinely good beaches, and that's the whole pitch: you live on the Indian Ocean for a fraction of what Cape Town costs. It works if you're fine with small-city rhythm, work in English, and don't mind depending on a car. It doesn't work if you want a nomad scene, usable public transport, or zero safety admin: coworking is thin, the time zone (SAST, UTC+2) is painful if your team is in the Americas, and Nelson Mandela Bay carries some of South Africa's highest crime rates.

Fibre reaches the suburbs you'd actually live in (Summerstrand, Humewood, Richmond Hill, Walmer, Mill Park, Newton Park): uncapped plans in the 50-100 Mbps range for roughly ≈US$35-50 a month, with several network operators and plenty of ISPs competing on top — coverage is street-by-street, so check the exact address before signing a lease. Line quality is good; the problem is never the fibre, it's the power. Eskom's load shedding (scheduled block outages, typically 2-4 hours at a time) has come and gone for years: there have been long stretches with almost none, then it returns without much warning. No power means your router and ONT die even though the fibre is fine, so a small UPS for the router is mandatory kit, not a luxury. On mobile, Vodacom and MTN have the best coverage (solid 4G, 5G in parts of the city) and work well as backup, though towers can also struggle during long outages. Everything here is billed in rand, so the dollar figures move with the exchange rate.

CoworkingCoworking

The scene is small and honestly immature next to Cape Town's. There are a handful of coworking spaces and hubs tied to the local startup ecosystem and to the university (Nelson Mandela University sits in Summerstrand), but don't expect a visible nomad community or weekly events; the spaces are built more for local startups and freelancers than for people passing through. Options change often enough that I won't name names — check what's actually open before you fly. A monthly pass runs ≈US$100-150 and most offer cheap day passes, so try before you commit. In practice a lot of remote work happens in cafés: the Stanley Street strip in Richmond Hill is the café-and-restaurant corridor where people settle in with a laptop, and the big malls have cafés with usable wifi. Always ask whether a space has a generator or batteries before paying for the month.

Summerstrand is the obvious pick: right on Hobie Beach and Pollok Beach, with Nelson Mandela University next door, it's the most walkable area and the one where daytime walking feels most relaxed; furnished apartments and beach life year-round. Humewood is next door, a bit older and slightly cheaper, with Kings Beach and the promenade at your feet. Richmond Hill has the most character: older houses, the Stanley Street corridor with the best cafés and restaurants, and the feel of a real neighborhood rather than a resort. Walmer, Mill Park and Newton Park are the leafy residential option, bigger houses and cheaper rent, close to the airport (which sits in Walmer) and to the malls (Walmer Park, Greenacres); cheaper, but you'll need a car for everything.

ComunidadCommunity

The city is nicknamed "The Friendly City" and it earns it: people chat, conversations start easily, and English is the everyday language (you'll hear plenty of isiXhosa and a fair amount of Afrikaans too, but you need neither to live here). The hard part isn't meeting people, it's meeting nomads: there are barely any. The foreign community is small and organizes around sport — surfing, kitesurfing, running clubs, cycling — and around Nelson Mandela Bay expat Facebook/WhatsApp groups, rather than coworking meetups. Spanish-speaking community: essentially nonexistent, so if you need daily Spanish, this isn't your city. One real social note: life here happens in people's homes, at the braai and at the sports club, not on the street, so the first month can feel lonely until someone invites you along.

Safety: Nelson Mandela Bay has some of the country's highest violent crime rates and "use common sense" doesn't cover it. The local playbook is real: you don't walk at night, you leave nothing visible in the car, you avoid Central/the CBD and the beachfront after dark, and you move by car or Uber. Daily life in the areas you'd live in is normal and calm, but the city runs on rules. Power and water: on top of load shedding, the metro went through a severe water crisis with dams critically low and a genuine "Day Zero" threat; rain has improved things, but restrictions and zonal supply cuts come back, so ask whether your building has a tank. The wind: it's called "The Windy City" for a reason — it blows hard much of the year and wears people down more than cold does. Transport: there's no public transport that will work for you, minibus taxis aren't a practical option if you don't know the city, and without your own car you depend on Uber/Bolt (they work, but the cost adds up). Money: everything is in rand and the rand swings, so treat every dollar figure here as ±10-15%. Visas: several Latin American passports get 90 days visa-free but not all of them — confirm yours with the embassy before booking. South Africa has published a remote work visa with a high income threshold, and the requirements and processing have kept shifting, so check the current status with an official source rather than trusting blogs.
