Cape Town is one of the planet's most beautiful cities: Table Mountain drops between two oceans, with vineyards, beaches and penguins around the corner. Cosmopolitan and creative, it's a nomad magnet — with two honest caveats: inequality means street smarts, and power cuts (load-shedding) are part of life.

How much do you need per month in Ciudad del Cabo?
Cape Town works if you want serious nature (mountain, two oceans, winelands 45 minutes away) with solid infrastructure and English as the default working language: the remote-work scene is huge and the weak rand makes your dollars stretch. It doesn't work if you want a walkable-at-any-hour city with decent public transport — here you live on Uber/Bolt, and safety is managed by neighborhood and by time of day, not by luck. And it isn't "cheap Africa": in the southern summer (Dec–Feb) rents spike and finding a decent monthly place is a genuine fight.

Among the best on the continent. Fibre covers most of the urban peninsula and an uncapped 50–200 Mbps plan runs ≈US$40–55/month; plenty of furnished flats include it. Mobile 4G/5G from MTN and Vodacom is solid across the city, though South African mobile data is expensive compared with Latin America. The asterisk is load shedding, the scheduled power cuts: they dropped sharply from 2024 and there were long stretches with none, but they aren't gone and come back in waves; Cape Town also tends to sit one stage below the rest of the country thanks to its own Steenbras pumped-storage scheme. If you have calls you can't miss, ask before signing whether the building has an inverter or generator, keep a small UPS on your router (no power means your gear dies even if the fibre line is fine), and keep mobile data as backup.
CoworkingCoworking
A mature, competitive scene — one of the best in Africa. There are big chains with several locations — Workshop17 is the best known, with spaces at the V&A Waterfront and in the City Bowl — plus a layer of independent spaces in Gardens, the city center and Woodstock that are cheaper and more community-driven. A monthly hot desk runs ≈US$120–220 depending on location and whether meeting rooms are included; private offices climb fast. Almost all of them sell backup power as their headline feature, so a coworking here doubles as your outage insurance. If you work with Europe the timezone is a gift (SAST = UTC+2); with the Americas it's awkward.
Sea Point is the remote-worker default: flats at every price point, the promenade for running, supermarkets and restaurants within walking distance, and among the most comfortable areas to be on foot during the day. Green Point and De Waterkant sit right next door — pricier, closer to the Waterfront and the nightlife. Gardens and Tamboerskloof, in the City Bowl under Table Mountain, are the most livable of all: Kloof Street cafés, trailheads ten minutes away, lots of local freelancers; damp and windy in winter. Observatory and Woodstock are the cheap, creative option, with good coffee and art studios, but the savings come with more caution after dark. And Muizenberg, on False Bay, is for people who surf and accept being 30–45 minutes from everything else.
ComunidadCommunity
Easy — maybe as easy as it gets in any nomad base. English is the day-to-day language for everything (banks, doctors, leases, the street), so there's no barrier from day one, and there's a big pool of European remote workers and South Africans working for foreign clients. Socializing runs through sport more than bars: running groups on the Sea Point promenade, hiking Lion's Head and Table Mountain, surf lessons in Muizenberg, plus the coworking event calendars. There is a Spanish-speaking community, but it's small — if you're coming to speak Spanish every day, this isn't the city; if you're coming to loosen up your English, it's perfect.
Safety is real here and you manage it with habits, not paranoia: don't walk around with your phone in your hand, don't walk at night through the CBD or Woodstock/Observatory (order an Uber even for six blocks), don't hike Lion's Head or Table Mountain alone, and never leave anything visible in a car. Second, seasonality can wreck your budget: from December to February half the city switches to Airbnb pricing and monthly rents jump hard, so arriving between March and November saves you hundreds of dollars. Third, winter (Jun–Aug) is cold, wet and windy, and a huge share of flats have no heating and poor insulation — it can feel worse indoors than out, so budget for an electric heater and a bigger power bill. Fourth, the summer southeaster blows relentlessly and it wears you down. And fifth, the paperwork: how many days you get on arrival depends on your passport, and NOT every Latin American passport is visa-exempt — some get up to 90 days visa-free, others have to apply, so confirm with the embassy or consulate before booking. Extending your stay through Home Affairs is slow and bureaucratic, don't count on it; and although South Africa published remote-work visa rules, rollout has been patchy and the income threshold is high: check an official source before planning a long stay.
