Cruda y vibrante a partes iguales.Johannesburg — Joburg or Jozi to locals — is South Africa's largest city and economic engine, though not its capital. It was born from gold: founded in 1886 after the Witwatersrand mines were discovered, it grew at breakneck speed on that high plateau at around 1,750 m, giving it a surprisingly cool climate. It's a city of intense contrasts and hard history: much of the struggle against apartheid was fought here, and Soweto and its museums tell it plainly. Raw and vibrant in equal measure.
Mejor épocaBest time
Thanks to the altitude, the climate is temperate year-round. The dry winter (May-August) is sunny and crisp with cold nights. Summer (October-March) brings intense afternoon storms.

¿Cuánto necesitas al mes en Johannesburg? How much do you need per month in Johannesburg?
Joburg works if you're here for actual work in Africa: it's the continent's economic engine, everything happens in English, and your money stretches a long way — what barely covers rent in Lisbon buys you a comfortable life here, coworking and eating out included. It does not work if you want the postcard nomad life of walking down to the café: this is a car-and-Uber city, spread out, and safety makes you change your habits from day one. Most nomads head to Cape Town instead, so the expat bubble here is thin — in exchange, life is more local, cheaper and less performative.

South Africa has solid fibre and Joburg is the best-covered part of the country: the Vumatel, Openserve and Frogfoot networks reach almost every northern suburb, and an uncapped 25–100 Mbps home plan runs ≈US$35–50 a month through ISPs like Afrihost, Webafrica or Cool Ideas. Installation can take a week or two, so ask BEFORE you sign whether the flat already has live fibre. On mobile, MTN and Vodacom give you solid 4G and 5G across the city, though data is expensive by Latin American standards. The real issue isn't speed, it's power: scheduled blackouts (load shedding) improved enormously from 2024 onward but never fully went away, and Joburg piles on local City Power outages and maintenance water cuts — check how the current year is going right before you move, because this shifts season to season. Without an inverter or a battery for your router, your fibre dies with the lights. Always ask whether the building has backup power: that one question separates a good base from a frustrating month.
CoworkingCoworking
This is a business scene, not a nomad scene: spaces are built for consultants, startups and corporate teams, so they're good, fairly formal, and they run generators or inverters (here that's a requirement, not a perk). Workshop17 operates in Joburg — its Rosebank location in The Bank building is the obvious reference — and international brands like Regus and Spaces have several sites in Sandton and Rosebank. There's also a layer of smaller independent spaces in Braamfontein, Maboneng and Melville, cheaper and more creative, but they open and close often, so check they're still alive before you show up. A monthly hot desk runs ≈US$120 to ≈US$250 depending on the area; Sandton is the priciest. Working from cafés is normal enough, but public wifi is patchy and plugs aren't a given, so most people end up paying for a fixed desk.
Rosebank is the safest bet for a first base: a Gautrain station, malls, cafés, coworking and enough walkable life inside the core — though everything around it is still car territory. Parkhurst and Greenside are leafy and residential; Parkhurst's 4th Avenue is one of the very few Joburg streets where you genuinely walk from café to café, and plenty of local freelancers live there. Melville is the bohemian, cheaper pick: old houses, 7th Street bars, a student vibe thanks to nearby Wits, with the tradeoff that nights demand more street sense. At the other end, Sandton and Melrose Arch are secure corporate bubbles, walkable within their perimeter and expensive: comfortable if your company pays, a bit sterile if not. Braamfontein and Maboneng have the city's best creative energy but change block by block — walk them in daylight first and judge with your own eyes.
ComunidadCommunity
The big advantage is language: everything runs in English, so from day one you understand leases, admin and conversations without friction (Zulu, Sotho and Afrikaans are spoken too, but you won't need them). The downside is that the nomad community is thin — people who come to South Africa for the nomad life usually pick Cape Town — so there's no weekly newcomer meetup circuit here. What there is: a strong tech and startup scene, one of the biggest on the continent, with events, demo days and fintech groups where you actually meet people who work. Local social life happens indoors — braais at someone's house, not plazas or terraces — so the first invitation is the hard part and after that it opens up fast. Two shortcuts that work: Saturday-morning parkrun (free 5k, all ages, deeply South African) and your neighbourhood gym or climbing wall. The Spanish-speaking community is small and orbits embassies and mining; don't count on it.
Safety is the honest conversation and I can't soften it: Joburg has high violent crime rates and the area you pick matters more here than in almost any city on earth. People live perfectly normal lives in the northern suburbs, but with adjusted habits: you don't walk at night, you don't leave your phone visible at a red light (smash-and-grabs are real), you don't wander the CBD without someone who knows it. That's not paranoia, it's local routine, and you'll absorb it in two weeks. Second: without a car or an Uber budget this city isolates you — there's no transit network that solves your life (the Gautrain is excellent but only covers the Sandton–Rosebank–city–airport–Pretoria spine). Third, the climate fools people: you're at ≈1,750m, so summer isn't brutal, but afternoon thunderstorms with hail roll in from November to March, and winter from June to August brings sunny days and ≈3–8°C nights in houses with no central heating — you'll be cold indoors. Add maintenance water outages in various suburbs, which have got worse in recent years. On paperwork: don't assume visa-free entry. Several Latin American passports (Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Uruguay) and Spanish ones get visa-free tourist entry, but others — Mexico among the ones you must confirm — either aren't on that list or follow different rules; there's also a remote work permit with a high annual income threshold (on the order of R1 million a year, ≈US$55,000, with requirements that have kept shifting). Check your specific case against the official South African source BEFORE booking a flight. On the rand: long term it has depreciated, so earning in dollars or euros usually works in your favour — but that same slide pushes local prices up year after year.
Figures in US dollars and approximate, reviewed in September 2026, for one person. Rents move fast in nomad-heavy cities — use these to compare and budget, not as a quote.
