¿Cuánto necesitas al mes en Polokwane? How much do you need per month in Polokwane?
Polokwane is the capital of Limpopo: a mid-sized administrative and commercial city, dry highland climate, decent fibre in the suburbs and low prices by South African standards. It is not a nomad hub — there's no remote-work scene here, no nomad meetups and essentially no coworking: the outsiders living here work in mining, agriculture, health or government. It works if you want a cheap English-speaking base near Kruger and the Zimbabwe border and you're willing to drive; it doesn't work if you want community, walkability or public transport.

Better than you'd expect: the good suburbs (Bendor, Flora Park, Ster Park, Fauna Park) have fibre in the ground with 50–100 Mbps plans, stable and fine for calls all day. Outside those suburbs and toward the edges fibre runs out and you're on fixed LTE/5G — workable, but with data caps and slow peak hours. Vodacom and MTN mobile coverage in town is very good, 4G plus 5G in several areas. The real issue is power: South Africa has years of load shedding behind it (Eskom's rotational cuts) and although there have been long stretches without them, the risk hasn't gone away — no power, no router, however good the fibre is. If you're working seriously, rent somewhere with an inverter/UPS or buy a small battery for router and laptop; it's the first thing everyone here does.
CoworkingCoworking
Straight talk: there's basically no coworking scene in Polokwane. Business centres and serviced offices exist, aimed at local companies and consultants, but not the flexible-desk, community kind you get in Cape Town or Johannesburg — I won't throw names at you because I can't vouch for which are still open. If you do find one, expect roughly ≈US$80–150 a month. In practice people work from home, from mall cafés (Mall of the North, Savannah Mall) or hotel lobbies: there's wifi, but it's noisy and plugs are scarce. Renting somewhere with solid internet and backup power matters far more here than hunting for a desk.
Bendor and Bendor Park — the most sought-after residential area, gated complexes, close to Mall of the North; it's where almost everyone arriving from elsewhere ends up. Flora Park and Fauna Park — classic leafy suburbs, bigger houses, a bit cheaper than Bendor. Ster Park and Serala View — newer, lots of townhouses in secure complexes, good for a year lease. Annadale and Ivy Park — central and practical, a mix of houses and flats, lower prices. The CBD (Polokwane Central) is for working and paperwork, not living: it empties out and gets uncomfortable at night. Seshego, to the northwest, is a big township — real life and good food, but not where someone arriving with no contacts should land.
ComunidadCommunity
Language isn't the problem: English is spoken everywhere, alongside Sepedi (Northern Sotho) as the majority language and plenty of Afrikaans. The barrier is different: there's no nomad community and almost no remote-working foreigners. The outsiders you'll meet are South African professionals from other provinces, mining and agriculture people, healthcare staff and the odd NGO worker — socialising happens through work, church, the gym, running clubs, rugby and someone's braai, not through meetups. Spanish-speaking community: effectively nonexistent, don't count on it. You can make friends, but by invitation and slowly; if you're here three weeks expecting an instant crowd, this isn't the city.
Lo que nadie te diceWhat nobody tells you
Vas a necesitar auto, punto. You will need a car, full stop. There's no real public transport: minibus taxis are cheap but hard to decode without knowing the routes, and Bolt/Uber work in town but thin out on the edges and at night. Add ≈US$400–550 a month if you rent one — that alone doubles a lean budget; if you're staying several months, almost everyone ends up buying a used car instead. Safety: Polokwane is calmer than South Africa's big metros, but it's still South Africa — house and vehicle crime happen, which is why everyone lives in gated complexes; don't walk the centre at night and leave nothing visible in the car. Load shedding, plus water outages and interruptions that have been a recurring headache in Polokwane: ask about a water tank (JoJo) and an inverter before you sign. Climate: the altitude makes it more bearable than the lowveld, but October to March gets properly hot with afternoon storms; winters are dry, nights get cold and houses have no heating. Leases: the norm is a 12-month contract with a one-to-two-month deposit, and short-term furnished places are scarce outside guesthouses and Airbnb. Watch the exchange rate: these figures assume ≈R18 to the dollar and the rand moves a fair bit — if it strengthens, your USD budget rises without anything changing on the ground. Visa: South Africa introduced a remote-work visa in 2024, but with a high annual income threshold (on the order of R1 million, ≈US$55,000) and requirements and processing times that have kept shifting — check the current position with Home Affairs or an immigration lawyer before you count on it.
Figures in US dollars and approximate, reviewed in September 2026, for one person. Rents move fast in nomad-heavy cities — use these to compare and budget, not as a quote.
