Visakhapatnam (Vizag)

Aprox. 1,063,178 habitantesApprox. 1,063,178 people

Visakhapatnam, or Vizag to everyone, is the largest city in Andhra Pradesh state, on India's east coast on the Bay of Bengal. It's at once a beach city, a major industrial port and home to the Indian Navy's Eastern Naval Command, wedged between the sea and the hills of the Eastern Ghats. It combines seaside promenades, a hilltop park on a bluff, very visible heavy industry (steel, refinery, shipyards) and, inland, the Araku Valley, a mountain-and-coffee getaway. It's the warm, coastal face of south India, less touristy than Goa or Kerala.

Mejor épocaBest time

Tropical coast: visit in 'winter' (November-February), mild and dry. Summer is very hot and humid, and from June to September the monsoon arrives, with cyclone risk in the bay.

PresupuestoBudget

Indian prices, very low: eating, moving and sleeping cost little. It's a working city rather than a tourist one, so there's good value with no destination markup.

¿Cuánto necesitas al mes en Visakhapatnam (Vizag)? How much do you need per month in Visakhapatnam (Vizag)?

Vizag is one of India's cheapest and most laid-back big cities: a beach, green hills behind it, excellent food, and rents that wouldn't cover a room back home. It works if you want a cheap coastal base to work quietly and travel eastern India from, you can handle humid heat most of the year, and you don't need people like you nearby. It doesn't work if you want a nomad scene — there basically isn't one, daily life runs in Telugu, and India has no digital nomad visa, so the legal side is a bigger problem than the money.

This is one of the best parts of living here: home fibre runs ≈US$8–13 a month and gives you a real 100–200 Mbps in the built-up areas (MVP, Dwaraka Nagar, Siripuram, Madhurawada). The usual providers are Jio, Airtel, BSNL and local cable operators; in newer buildings it can be installed within days, in older houses it takes longer. Mobile is even cheaper: a prepaid plan is ≈US$4–6 a month — but it isn't truly unlimited: the standard is 1.5 or 2 GB per day, after which you're throttled to something close to useless. Solid 4G citywide and 5G already working across much of the urban core. Two caveats are real: power cuts happen (short and random, more often at peak heat), so if you live on video calls you'll want a battery backup for the router; and in cyclone season a bad storm can knock out power and internet for days on end. Always keep your phone as a hotspot fallback.

CoworkingCoworking

Minimal, fragile scene. Vizag has an IT industry and a years-long official push to attract startups (with offices and tech parks around Rushikonda and Madhurawada), so a handful of coworkings and flexible offices do exist — but they're few, aimed mostly at local teams rather than passing foreigners, and they open and close easily. I'm not naming any because I can't confirm which are still running today: check Google Maps the week before you arrive and call to confirm they exist. Expect ≈US$50–90 a month for a dedicated desk. In practice most remote workers here work from home and use cafés with decent wifi around MVP Colony and Beach Road when they need to get out — but don't count on the "laptop parked all day" culture you get in Bali or Bangkok.

Gajuwaka y el lado del puerto son industriales: baratos, pero contaminados y sin nada pensado para ti.MVP Colony is the short answer: the most comfortable, organized part of town, with restaurants, gyms, supermarkets and decent buildings, and where almost everyone arriving from elsewhere on a mid budget ends up. Siripuram and Lawson's Bay Colony are the expensive, quiet areas near the sea and the beach road. Madhurawada and Rushikonda are the newer side: modern, cheap apartments next to the IT offices and the city's best beach, in exchange for being far from the centre. Dwaraka Nagar is the commercial and transport hub — noisy and practical, good if you want everything on foot and don't mind the chaos. Gajuwaka and the port side are industrial: cheap, but polluted and with nothing built for you.

ComunidadCommunity

Be honest with yourself: there's no nomad community here. The foreigners you'll see are industry people, sailors passing through the port, the odd professor or student at Andhra University, GITAM or the IIM, and that's about it. Spanish speakers: essentially zero. You won't find nomad meetups; there is some tech and startup activity tied to the IT sector, plus running groups and trekking outings into the hills and up to Araku, which are the easiest way in. The upside: people in Vizag are genuinely warm and curious about newcomers, and making local friends is easier than in Delhi or Mumbai. Daily life runs in Telugu; English gets you through hospitals, offices, malls and with younger or IT-sector people, but with auto drivers, vegetable sellers and landlords you'll struggle. Hindi helps less than you'd think in the south. Learn twenty words of Telugu and everything changes.

The first issue isn't money, it's the visa: India has no digital nomad visa, and an e-Tourist visa doesn't let you work — not even for a client abroad; depending on visa type and length of stay you may also need to register with the FRRO. Get properly informed before planning months here. Second is the climate, and it's three separate things: hard, humid heat from March to June; the southwest monsoon from June to September, with serious rain; and above all cyclones — Vizag sits right on the Bay of Bengal, and in October 2014 Cyclone Hudhud tore the city apart; the risk season runs roughly October to December and deserves to be taken seriously, not as a story. Practically: rental agreements are usually 11 months with several months' deposit up front, and as a foreigner you'll be asked for paperwork and sometimes quoted an inflated price — negotiate and see the place in person. Alcohol in Andhra Pradesh is heavily regulated, sold mostly through state-controlled shops, and expensive compared to other Indian states; the policy also changes with each government, so confirm on arrival. The city is calm and reasonably safe by Indian standards, but traffic and the air near the port and the Gajuwaka industrial belt are another matter. One last thing: there are serious private hospitals, but for anything complex people still travel to Hyderabad or Chennai.

Figures in US dollars and approximate, reviewed in September 2026, for one person. Rents move fast in nomad-heavy cities — use these to compare and budget, not as a quote.
