Calcuta

Kolkata is the capital of West Bengal and, for many, the cultural capital of India. It was the capital of the British Raj until 1911 and keeps that legacy in its colonial architecture, its trams —the last running in the country— and its yellow taxis. It's a city of poets, cinema, intellectual coffee houses and fierce politics, with a Bengali cuisine devoted to river fish and to sweets. Every October the city erupts into Durga Puja, its great festival.

¿Cuánto necesitas al mes en Calcuta? How much do you need per month in Calcuta?
Kolkata is one of the cheapest places anywhere to live with decent internet: ≈US$500 a month genuinely works, and ≈US$1,100 lives well. The real cost isn't money, it's the climate and the air — April to June is a humid furnace, the monsoon floods the streets, and winter, the pleasant season, brings the worst air quality of the year. It works if you actually want to sink into India, in a city that's intense, cultured and cheap; it doesn't work if you want a ready-made nomad scene, comfortable weather, or people like you at the coworking desk.

This is where India works in your favor: fiber is dirt cheap and fast. Plans of 100–300 Mbps for ≈US$8–15 a month from providers like Alliance Broadband (big and Kolkata-born), JioFiber or Airtel Xstream; the advertised figure is download speed and upload is usually a lot lower, so ask about it if you're on video calls all day. Day-to-day stability is good, with occasional drops during the monsoon when the street floods or the power cuts; supply in the central city is reasonably reliable by Indian standards, but storms do knock it out and a UPS or a solid power bank will save a call. Jio and Airtel 4G/5G coverage is wide and absurdly cheap — your phone hotspot is the real backup, and it holds. Watch out for cheap flats and Airbnbs: many have weak or shared wifi; ask for a speedtest before you commit to a long stay.
CoworkingCoworking
Small scene, aimed at local IT rather than travelers. It clusters in Salt Lake Sector V, the city's tech hub, with some options downtown (the Park Street / Camac Street area). The national flexible-office chains — the Awfis and Regus/IWG type — are the safest bet because they open branches in both zones; independent spaces exist but come and go, so confirm one is still alive (and its current price) before you show up. Monthly hot desk ≈US$60–110, depending on shared room versus dedicated desk. Don't expect Bali or Medellín energy: most people in the room are local company employees, not nomads, and the networking happens in English but about Indian business. There are cafés to work from in the south and around Park Street, but few have the culture of letting you camp for five hours with a laptop.
Park Street / Camac Street / Elgin — the colonial core: walkable, packed with restaurants, bars and cafés, and the easiest place to live if you don't speak Bengali. Also the loudest. Ballygunge / Southern Avenue / Gariahat — the leafy residential south, next to Rabindra Sarobar lake. A mix of old buildings with character and new towers; a lot of upper-middle-class Kolkata lives here and daily life is at its most enjoyable. Salt Lake (Bidhannagar) — a planned, orderly, quiet township right beside Sector V. The most practical choice if you want coworking ten minutes away, but it shuts down at night and has little soul. New Town / Rajarhat — the newest area: wide avenues, modern cheap apartments, close to the airport. Also the most impersonal and the furthest from the Kolkata you came to see.
ComunidadCommunity
There is no organized nomad community — that's the honest answer. Foreigners exist: consulates, corporate postings, academics, NGO volunteers (Kolkata has a long tradition there). Spanish speakers, very few; forget finding a Spanish-language crowd. The good news is English is widely spoken, especially among the university-educated, and Kolkatans have a well-earned reputation as talkers, curious and hospitable: go out and you make real friends fast. The street language is Bengali (much of the city understands Hindi too). Culture beats coworking for meeting people: theater, bookshops, concerts, film clubs and café life are seriously strong here; Sector V tech meetups exist but are few and small.
The weather runs the show. April to June means 35 °C and up with brutal humidity, and it feels worse; the monsoon (June to September) floods streets and stalls the city — Kolkata's waterlogging is legendary. The Bay of Bengal sends cyclones mainly in April-May and October-November. The good window is November to February, cool and lovely — which is exactly when air quality gets genuinely bad; Kolkata shows up year after year among India's worst in winter. If you have asthma or you're coming with kids, that weighs more than the budget does. During Durga Puja (September or October, depending on the calendar) the city stops for several days: enormous crowds, impossible traffic, expensive accommodation. It's spectacular, but don't plan to work that week. Renting: expect to be asked for several months' deposit (usually 2–3), an 11-month lease and one month's commission to the broker, though every landlord negotiates differently. Many prefer local tenants, and hosting a foreigner means reporting them to the authorities (the famous Form C) — so the casual WhatsApp deal doesn't always go through. Rent varies wildly between an old building and a new tower on the same street: walk the area before you commit. Visas: India has no digital nomad visa. People work remotely on a tourist e-visa, which is a legal gray zone, and the rules on length of stay and which nationalities qualify change often — don't trust a blog, check with the Indian mission before you book the flight, and ask about FRRO registration if you plan to stay many months. Safety: Kolkata is relatively calm on street crime compared with other Indian metros, but the usual applies — taxi scams and the "your hotel closed" routine, care with water and food in your first days, and the normal precautions for women out alone at night.
Figures in US dollars and approximate, reviewed in September 2026, for one person. Rents move fast in nomad-heavy cities — use these to compare and budget, not as a quote.
