Ahmedabad is the largest city in Gujarat, on the banks of the Sabarmati River, and India's first UNESCO World Heritage City for its walled old town of narrow lanes (the 'pols'). It was central to Gandhi's life: he founded the Sabarmati Ashram here, the starting point of the Salt March. It's a city of textile and trading tradition, largely vegetarian, with a distinctive sweet-savory Gujarati cuisine. The climate is hot and dry most of the year.

¿Cuánto necesitas al mes en Ahmedabad? How much do you need per month in Ahmedabad?
Ahmedabad is one of India's cheapest places to actually live well: cheap, stable fibre, one of the country's better power grids, and a whole apartment for what a single room costs elsewhere. It works if you're here to work remotely on a small budget, you get along with vegetarian food (it's close to a religion here) and you don't mind being one of very few foreigners on your street. It doesn't work if you want a nomad scene, nightlife or a beer: Gujarat is a genuinely dry state, the international community is tiny, and from April to June the 43-45 °C heat locks you indoors with the AC on.

Fibre is Ahmedabad's strong suit: 100-300 Mbps plans for ≈US$9-15 a month from Jio, Airtel or local Gujarat providers, easily stable enough for video calls all day. Gujarat has one of India's more reliable grids, so long outages aren't a daily thing on the west side — still, a monsoon storm between June and September can knock the power out for a while, so if your income depends on calls, a UPS or a big power bank plus a backup mobile data plan pay for themselves. Mobile 4G/5G coverage is good across the city and absurdly cheap: ≈US$3-5 a month buys more data than you can tether. And one thing that isn't about infrastructure but will affect you: India blocks sites and apps fairly regularly by official order, so land with a paid VPN already installed.
CoworkingCoworking
The scene exists, but it's local startups and businesses, not foreign nomads: you'll be sharing a table with Gujarati software, pharma and trading teams, not with someone from Berlin. Most spaces sit along the SG Highway corridor, Prahlad Nagar and Bodakdev, inside office towers, and a hot desk runs ≈US$50-90 a month, cheaper if you commit to a quarter. Indian national chains have branches here alongside plenty of independent spaces; DevX, which started in Ahmedabad, is the name you'll hear most. Cafés work as a plan B, but few are set up for a full day with a plug and decent wifi.
Satellite and Vastrapur are the safe bet: the modern west side, next to Vastrapur lake and IIM-A, with cafés, gyms, supermarkets and the deepest supply of furnished apartments. Prahlad Nagar is newer and tidier — residential towers, a garden to run in, young professionals, minutes from the coworking spaces. Bodakdev and Thaltej, along the SG Highway corridor, are the priciest and the most mall-and-restaurant: comfortable if you want an office nearby and don't mind relying on a car or rickshaw. Navrangpura and CG Road are where the city actually happens: older, louder, cheaper, universities close by (CEPT is right there, NID a short ride away) and nearly everything walkable — the best pick if you don't want to depend on a car. The walled Old City, named a UNESCO World Heritage site in 2017, is beautiful to walk but awkward as a place to live.
ComunidadCommunity
Don't show up expecting a ready-made tribe: there are very few foreigners and almost no Spanish speakers. What does exist is a strong student and creative scene around IIM-A, CEPT and NID, plus tech and startup meetups run in English and Hindi — that's your best way in. Daily life happens in Gujarati and Hindi; English gets you through offices, west-side cafés and conversations with university-educated people, but not so much with rickshaw drivers or at the market. People are genuinely hospitable and invitations home come fast, though social life revolves around family, restaurants and temples rather than bars — because there are no bars.
Gujarat is a dry state: the alcohol ban is real and enforced. As a foreigner you can apply for a visitor liquor permit, but forget grabbing a beer on the corner or going out for drinks. The other hit is the climate: April to June clears 43 °C without breaking a sweat, the June-September monsoon brings humidity and flooded streets, and the good weather runs November to February — exactly when the air gets fairly dirty. India has no digital nomad visa and a tourist visa doesn't authorise work; on top of that, depending on your visa type and length you may have to register with the FRRO — check the current rules before you book, don't improvise it. On housing, leases are usually 11 months with a deposit of several months' rent, and plenty of buildings and landlords are strictly vegetarian and picky about tenants; if you eat meat or you're a single foreigner, expect a few flat "no"s. And the traffic: constant horns, rickshaws everywhere, and crossing the street is a contact sport.
Figures in US dollars and approximate, reviewed in September 2026, for one person. Rents move fast in nomad-heavy cities — use these to compare and budget, not as a quote.
