Chennai, formerly Madras, is the capital of Tamil Nadu on India's southeastern Coromandel coast. It's the great city of the Tamil world: Carnatic music, Dravidian temples with sculpted towers, the "Kollywood" film industry and an unmatched devotion to filter coffee and dosas. Facing the Bay of Bengal stretches Marina Beach, one of the longest urban beaches in the world. It was the first English foothold in India, with Fort St. George, and keeps a more conservative, traditional feel than other Indian metropolises.

¿Cuánto necesitas al mes en Chennai? How much do you need per month in Chennai?
Chennai is one of the cheapest big-city bases in Asia: ≈US$600 a month buys a comfortable life by local standards, and ≈US$1,300 gets you your own apartment in a good area, coworking, and eating out most nights. It works if your work touches India, if you're genuinely curious about Tamil culture, and if eating cheap vegetarian food daily sounds good. It doesn't work if you want a ready-made nomad scene — there barely is one, the typical foreigner here is corporate (IT, auto, consulates) — or if heat wrecks you: April to June the city is a humid furnace, and October to December the northeast monsoon brings real flooding.

Cheap and generally reliable — among the best in South India. ACT Fibernet, JioFiber and Airtel Xstream cover most of the city: 150–300 Mbps for ≈US$10–19 a month, installed within days if the building is already wired. Mobile: Jio and Airtel give solid 4G and 5G across much of the city, with near-unlimited data plans for ≈US$4–7, so hotspot is a genuine backup. Scheduled maintenance power cuts still happen (announced, a couple of hours) and any decent building has an inverter or generator — ask before you sign, because without backup your video calls will drop. The real problem isn't daily life but the monsoon: with cyclones and flooding from October to December, power and internet can go down for hours or days in the areas that flood.
CoworkingCoworking
The scene exists and is solid, but it's built for the local IT sector and startups, not for passing nomads: expect serious offices, heavy AC, meeting rooms, and not much Bali-style community life. The national chains operate here — Awfis, IndiQube and Regus have several locations, plus local operators — clustered mainly in Guindy, Nungambakkam, Teynampet and the OMR corridor. A monthly hot desk runs ≈US$70–125, and a day pass ≈US$4–8; check whether GST is included, since many quote it separately. If you live in Besant Nagar or Adyar, think twice about picking a space on OMR: at rush hour that commute easily tops an hour.
Besant Nagar is most foreigners' first pick: Elliot's Beach, cafés, bakeries, young people out walking at night, and a relaxed feel that's rare in this city. Adyar and Thiruvanmiyur next door are greener and more residential, with plenty of furnished apartments and quick access to the OMR tech corridor. Alwarpet and Nungambakkam are the well-off center: consulates, restaurants, cafés and the best access to everything, though you pay more and it's noisier. If you work or socialize with the tech world, many people end up on OMR (Perungudi, Sholinganallur) or in Velachery: newer buildings and cheaper rent, in exchange for traffic and very little to do on foot.
ComunidadCommunity
Meeting people takes more effort than in Bangalore or Goa, and you have to go looking. The foreign community is mostly corporate — IT and auto-sector engineers, consulates, students — so you won't bump into nomads in a café. What does work: activity groups, which are huge and genuinely welcoming here (trekking, running, weekend cycling), startup and tech events, and Besant Nagar beach at sunset. The Spanish-speaking community is tiny; assume you'll socialize in English. On language: daily life runs in Tamil, English works fine across the city — with Uber, in offices, in restaurants — and Hindi does not. Tamil Nadu has a tense history with Hindi imposition, so don't default to it; learning ten words of Tamil opens more doors than anything else.
Lo que nadie te diceWhat nobody tells you
Three things will actually hit you. The weather: April to June means 38–42 °C with high humidity — not mild discomfort, you simply don't go out mid-afternoon; then October to December the northeast monsoon floods whole neighborhoods regularly, and cyclones aren't theoretical (Cyclone Michaung, December 2023, left the city underwater for days). Ask explicitly whether your street floods before you sign anything. Water: Chennai has chronic scarcity and many buildings depend on tanker deliveries — ask where the water comes from and whether it's billed separately. And money up front: deposits here are notoriously steep, typically 3 to 6 months' rent (sometimes more); you get it back when you leave, but it wrecks your moving budget, and the standard agreement is 11 months, plus a one-month broker fee. Short furnished lets are usually far less, so negotiate from the start. Add transport: the metro still doesn't reach Besant Nagar or Adyar (Phase 2 is under construction), so you rely on the elevated MRTS, autorickshaws and Rapido, and rush-hour traffic is brutal. Nights are quiet and alcohol is sold mainly through state-run shops (TASMAC), so if you want nightlife, this isn't your city. On visas, India has no digital nomad visa: you come on a tourist e-visa, continuous-stay limits vary by nationality, and working online on a tourist visa is a gray area — rules change often, so confirm at the official source before you book. One more thing on the numbers: they're converted at ≈₹88 to the dollar, so if the rupee moves, the USD figure moves with it.
Figures in US dollars and approximate, reviewed in September 2026, for one person. Rents move fast in nomad-heavy cities — use these to compare and budget, not as a quote.
