Varanasi

Varanasi (also Benares, or Kashi to Hindus) is one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities on earth and the spiritual heart of Hinduism, on the banks of the Ganges in Uttar Pradesh. Life revolves around the ghats: the long riverfront staircases where people bathe in the sacred river, pray, and cremate their dead. It's intense, loud, chaotic and deeply moving; for many Hindus, dying here releases the soul from the cycle of rebirth. It isn't a 'pretty' city in the usual sense — it's one of the most powerful experiences India offers.

Mejor épocaBest time

October to March, in north India's winter: cool mornings perfect for the sunrise boat ride. Summer (April–June) is scorching, and the monsoon (July–September) can raise the Ganges enough to flood the lower ghats.

PresupuestoBudget

India is very cheap for foreign travelers: lodging, food and boats cost little. It's one of the destinations where a backpacker's money stretches furthest, though you should bargain and agree prices upfront.

EntradaEntry

India requires a visa for almost all nationalities; most apply for a tourist e-Visa online before traveling. Sort it out in advance.

The old town by the ghats is a maze of pedestrian-only alleys (and cows). For everything else, auto- or cycle-rickshaw, or a ride-hailing app. The sunrise boat along the river is a must.

Rowing along the Ganges as the sun rises and the city wakes to pray and bathe is the definitive image of Varanasi.

Manikarnika Ghat

The main cremation ghat, where pyres burn day and night. It's viewed with respect and no photos; it's the city's direct relationship with death.

Sarnath

A few kilometers away, where the Buddha gave his first sermon after enlightenment: the Dhamek Stupa and Buddhist ruins, a serene contrast to the ghats' bustle.

¿Y si te quedas una temporada? What if you stay a while?

Costo de vida nómadaNomad cost of living

¿Cuánto necesitas al mes en Varanasi? How much do you need per month in Varanasi?

Varanasi is one of the cheapest bases on the planet: ≈US$500 a month covers a life here, and ≈US$1,000 buys a comfortable one. The real cost isn't money, it's intensity — a sacred city, loud, packed tight in the old lanes, with badly polluted air from November to January, and no established nomad scene or serious coworking. It works if deep India is what pulls you, you work off a laptop alone and can handle the chaos; it doesn't work if you need an office, quiet for all-day calls, clean air, or a ready-made nomad community.

Better than the city looks, without overselling it. Home fiber (JioFiber, Airtel, BSNL and local ISPs) reaches the newer areas and much of Assi/Lanka: a 100 Mbps plan runs ≈US$8–12 a month and 300 Mbps plans go for ≈US$15–20, with decent upload for video calls. In the old-city lanes it depends entirely on the building: many guesthouses split one line across every room and it halves at night, so test the wifi with a real call before committing to a month. Mobile is solid: Jio and Airtel blanket the city with cheap 4G and 5G is live in the central areas, with data plans costing less than a coffee — always keep the hotspot as backup. Power cuts do happen, mostly during peak-demand summer; they usually run minutes to a couple of hours, and decent buildings have an inverter. Ask outright: "is there an inverter?" before you rent. Also know that India shuts down mobile internet by administrative order during unrest — rare in Varanasi, but it happens across the country, and it's one more reason to keep fiber and mobile data as separate lifelines.

CoworkingCoworking

Be straight with yourself: Varanasi has no coworking scene. Small spaces have opened in the newer part of town (Sigra, Cantt, near the university) aimed at local startups and students, with memberships typically landing somewhere around ≈US$30–70 a month, but they open and close often and I can't hand you a name I'm confident is still running — check maps and local groups once you're there, and don't assume the price until you ask. What actually works: cafés and guesthouses around Assi Ghat, where long-stay foreigners park with a laptop for hours and nobody pushes them out. It's a "café plus your room" setup, not an office one: if you need a monitor, a real chair and a call space, bring it or rent a flat and build the desk yourself.

Assi Ghat and Bhadaini — the default neighborhood for any long-stay foreigner. It's the southern end of the ghats, more open and breathable than the old city, with cafés, yoga and music schools, guesthouses that do monthly rates, and people who've been here years. First time, start here. Lanka — right by the gate of Banaras Hindu University (BHU): student energy, cheap food all day, rents below Assi, everything walkable or a short rickshaw away. Sigra and Mahmoorganj — modern Varanasi: actual apartment buildings, supermarkets, hospitals, wide streets. Less poetic, far more functional if you want a normal flat with good fiber. Cantonment (Cantt) — green, orderly, next to the train station; the quiet expensive option, but it puts you far from the river and daily life. The old city (Godowlia, Dashashwamedh) is astonishing to visit and exhausting to live in: lanes no car can enter, noise at every hour, damp and little daylight.

ComunidadCommunity

There are people, just not the community you're picturing. Varanasi draws a very specific long-stay foreigner: Sanskrit, yoga, tabla and sitar students, people on a spiritual track, researchers, and the odd traveler who never left — far more than digital founders. You meet them in the Assi cafés, in classes, and at the evening aarti, not at tech meetups, which barely exist here. The Spanish-speaking crowd is small and transient, so plan on living your social life in English. Good news: English works with BHU students, guesthouses, cafés and younger locals; the street runs on Hindi and Bhojpuri, and twenty words plus gestures handles it. Locals are talkative and curious; stay a few months in one neighborhood and you'll have your own network fast — a local one, though, not a nomad one.

The air. From November to January, Varanasi sits in the Indo-Gangetic plain under thermal inversion and crop burning, and air quality spends whole days at genuinely bad levels. If you have asthma or plan to run outdoors, this isn't a footnote: bring a purifier and a mask and check the index daily. Second, the weather: April to June climbs past 40 °C and is brutal, and the July–September monsoon raises the Ganges until it swallows the ghat steps and brings dengue — the genuinely livable stretch is October to March, with the air-quality asterisk. Third, the visa: India has no digital nomad visa; you come in on a tourist e-visa (30 days, 1 year or 5 years depending on type, with a per-stay day limit), and working remotely on it sits in a grey zone that isn't formally allowed — so no invoicing Indian clients and no volunteering it at immigration; if your visa runs past 180 days check whether FRRO registration applies, and know your accommodation reports your stay to the government (Form C). Fourth, renting: formal leases run 11 months with a 1–3 month deposit, and plenty of landlords won't rent to foreigners without references, which is why almost everyone starts on a monthly guesthouse rate and negotiates later. Fifth, day-to-day money: everything runs on UPI here and opening an Indian account as a tourist is hard, so you'll carry more cash than you expect. Then the daily stuff: this is a pilgrimage city, so expect noise at 4am, enormous crowds during festivals like Mahashivratri or Dev Deepawali with accommodation prices spiking, guides and "priests" overcharging foreigners at the ghats, a real ban on photographing the cremation ghats (respect it), and water you only drink filtered or bottled. Food is overwhelmingly vegetarian and excellent; give your stomach two weeks.

Figures in US dollars and approximate, reviewed in September 2026, for one person. Rents move fast in nomad-heavy cities — use these to compare and budget, not as a quote.
