Tulsa
Aprox. 403,505 habitantesApprox. 403,505 people
Tulsa is Oklahoma's second city, in the heart of the United States, built with oil money in the early 20th century. That boom left it one of the country's finest collections of Art Deco architecture. The mythic Route 66 runs through it, and the Greenwood district was "Black Wall Street", site of the 1921 race massacre, now remembered with museums and memorials. In recent years it grew famous among nomads for Tulsa Remote, which pays remote workers to move there. A calm, affordable city with more culture than it lets on.

¿Cuánto necesitas al mes en Tulsa? How much do you need per month in Tulsa?
Tulsa is one of the cheapest bases you'll find inside the United States, and it has a real remote-work scene because somebody paid for one: the Tulsa Remote program has spent years bringing in remote workers with a cash incentive, and that built a community a city this size wouldn't have on its own. It works if you need or want to be in the US — dollar invoices, US clients, family nearby — without paying Austin or Denver rent. It doesn't work if you're a foreigner with no US work authorization (there's no nomad visa here), or if you hate depending on a car: Tulsa is built for driving, public transport is barely a thing, and summer keeps you indoors.

Gigabit cable covers basically the whole city and fiber has been reaching more of Tulsa, so 300–1,000 Mbps down is normal; if your work depends on upload, ask whether your specific address gets fiber and not just cable, because cable upload is far slower. Mobile coverage across the metro is good on all three major carriers. The weak spot isn't speed, it's the power grid: spring storms and especially winter ice storms knock out electricity for hours or days across whole neighborhoods — Oklahoma has a track record there, and the October 2020 ice storm left much of the city dark for days. Keep a battery and mobile data as plan B.
CoworkingCoworking
Here's the odd thing about Tulsa: for a city this size the coworking scene is disproportionately good, and that's because of the remote-work program. 36 Degrees North is the ecosystem hub and the reference point — it's where newcomers land, where the events happen and where the network forms; the Tulsa Remote program has historically included membership there for participants, but confirm it, because terms change. Monthly pricing: budget ≈US$100–200 for a hot desk and ≈US$250–350 for a dedicated one, always worth checking directly. Beyond that there are work-friendly cafés downtown, in the Arts District and along Cherry Street; it's not Mexico City in sheer options, but for the city's size there's plenty.
Remote-working newcomers almost always end up in one of four areas: downtown and the Tulsa Arts District (the old Brady district), the most walkable part of the city and where the new apartments and the coworking are; Brookside, along Peoria Avenue, with restaurants, bars and a thirty-something crowd; Cherry Street (15th Street), pretty old houses and cafés, the favorite for people who want to live in a neighborhood rather than a complex; and Midtown generally, around Utica Square, more residential and family-oriented. Kendall-Whittier is cheaper and more mixed, and has been climbing. The Mexican and Spanish-speaking community lives mostly in east Tulsa, around Garnett and 21st — in practice a different city from the downtown one.
ComunidadCommunity
Easier than you'd expect, and that's the main reason to pick Tulsa. The Tulsa Remote program doesn't just hand out the cash incentive: it runs events, introduces people and drops you into a group where everyone is new and everyone wants to meet someone, so you don't land in a social vacuum. Outside that bubble, Tulsa is a friendly middle-America city: people say hello, make conversation and invite you along, but social life revolves around church, work and lifelong friends, and breaking into that takes longer. Day-to-day language is English, no practical exceptions; there's a large, established Spanish-speaking community on the east side with its own businesses, churches and genuinely good Mexican food, but it's geographically and socially separate from the downtown nomad circuit.
Lo que nadie te diceWhat nobody tells you
Tres cosas. Three things. One: you need a car, full stop. Tulsa is completely spread out, public transport is minimal and infrequent, and insurance, gas and maintenance easily run US$300–450 a month — if you were comparing against a Latin American city where you walk everywhere, that's your savings gone. Two: the weather isn't decorative. You're in tornado country, peak season is April to June, summers push past 100°F with humidity, and winter brings ice storms that take the power down; find out where your building's shelter is on day one, not the day the siren goes off. Three: paperwork and health. The US has no digital nomad visa, and Tulsa's program is built for people already authorized to work in the US; if you're a foreigner without that, this city isn't an option however cheap it looks. And budget health insurance from day one: it's the line item that wrecks the budgets of people arriving from outside the US system. Minor but real: prices are advertised before tax, and Tulsa's sales tax runs around 8.5%, so everything costs a bit more than the sticker says.
Figures in US dollars and approximate, reviewed in September 2026, for one person. Rents move fast in nomad-heavy cities — use these to compare and budget, not as a quote.
