Chicago

Aprox. 2,720,546 habitantesApprox. 2,720,546 people

Chicago is the great American city without the coasts' posturing: skyscrapers that invented the genre facing an immense lake, jazz and blues in basements, deep-dish pizza and neighborhoods from every corner of the world. Less touristy than New York or LA, more real and friendly — with one famous enemy: the winter, which truly bites.

¿Cuánto necesitas al mes en Chicago? How much do you need per month in Chicago?

Chicago works if you earn in dollars and want a genuinely big city — transit that actually works, world-class food, art, the lake, and a real professional and tech scene — without New York or San Francisco prices. It doesn't work if you're trying to stretch your money: it's an expensive US city with 12-month leases and no immigration path for "living here a while". The internet is excellent; winter is the filter that decides whether you stay.

This is where Chicago wins easily. The city is well wired and just about every neighborhood has fast internet, with good stability and low latency to US and European servers: video calls just work. One detail nobody warns you about: cable and fiber are not the same thing. Cable (the dominant provider across much of the city) gives you plenty of download but noticeably less upload — fine for meetings, annoying if you push heavy files daily. Truly symmetric fiber exists and is excellent, but it arrives building by building, not neighborhood by neighborhood: ALWAYS ask which provider and which connection type the exact unit has before signing. Budget ≈US$50-80/month for a home plan. 5G coverage is solid across the city and there's signal in much of the subway, though it drops in some tunnels. There are no systematic blackouts; power can go out for a few hours after a strong summer thunderstorm or a windy snowstorm, but that's the exception. The bottleneck isn't the network — signing up for internet in your own name usually requires a Social Security number or a deposit, so if you rent furnished, make sure it's already included.

CoworkingCoworking

Big, mature scene, but built for local companies and freelancers more than for passing nomads. National chains have several locations in the Loop and West Loop (WeWork and Industrious are the ones you'll see most), plus 1871, the tech hub inside the Merchandise Mart, a genuine institution in the city's startup ecosystem where real events and networking happen. There are also independent neighborhood spaces in areas like Logan Square, Pilsen and Andersonville: smaller, cheaper and more community-driven, though they change owners and names often, so scout them once you arrive rather than trusting a list. Budget ≈US$200-350/month for a hot desk and considerably more for a private office; almost all of them sell day passes or part-time plans, which make more sense if you're not going in daily. Free and widely used alternative: the public libraries — the Harold Washington branch in the Loop has wifi, tables and quiet.

West Loop is the obvious pick if you work remotely and want to walk to everything: new buildings, the city's densest restaurant scene, coworkings around the corner, and instant access to the Loop. It's also among the priciest. Logan Square is where a lot of young creative people actually live: less glass, more brick, great bars and coffee, the Blue Line takes you downtown and straight to O'Hare airport, and you pay noticeably less than in West Loop. Wicker Park / Bucktown next door is the established, slightly pricier version of the same thing. Pilsen is the historic Mexican neighborhood: murals, food, a strong Hispanic community, more affordable rents and a genuine neighborhood feel — less corporate, with fewer office-type services. If you want the lake and quiet, Lakeview and Andersonville up north are residential, safe and very walkable. Rule of thumb: life concentrates on the north side and near the lakefront; the farther from downtown and the lake, the cheaper and less connected.

ComunidadCommunity

It's a city of roughly 2.6 million: there's a community for everything, but you have to go find it. Day-to-day life runs in English; Spanish gets you by perfectly in Pilsen, Little Village and Humboldt Park, where the Mexican and Puerto Rican communities are huge and generations deep — Chicago has one of the largest Mexican-origin populations in the United States. Meetups, rec sports leagues, running groups, classes and startup events happen daily and are easy to find. What barely exists is the classic nomad scene of Medellín or Lisbon: people here already have their lives and their long-standing friends, so making friends takes more effort than in a nomad hub, especially in winter when everyone stays indoors. Summer is the opposite: the whole city pours outside, there's a festival every weekend, and meeting people is effortless.

Four things, in order of importance. Winter. December through March is genuinely cold, with whole days below freezing, wind that makes it much worse, and darkness from 4:30 p.m. in December. Plenty of people fall in love with Chicago in July and leave in February: if you can, survive one full winter before signing anything long-term. Immigration. The United States has no digital nomad visa. On an ESTA (up to 90 days) or a B1/B2 tourist visa you enter with tourist status: you can't work for US employers or clients, and while working remotely for your own foreign clients is a gray area many people navigate, the border officer decides on the spot — and signing a long lease on tourist status raises questions. Do real research before planning a move. Rent and actual costs. Standard leases are 12 months, almost always unfurnished, and usually require US credit history, proof of income and a deposit; month-to-month furnished exists but costs considerably more. Watch the sticker price: Chicago's sales tax is around 10.25% (among the highest in the country) and downtown restaurants add more on top, it's never included on the menu or the tag, and a 18-20% tip is expected. Add health insurance: without it, one emergency can cost you thousands. Safety. It varies enormously by area, and the city's national reputation is worse than the actual experience in the neighborhoods you'd live in: the north side, the lakefront, the Loop and West Loop feel unremarkable. There are South and West side areas with serious violence problems that you simply won't go to. Use night-time common sense on the train, and be aware of street phone snatching, especially in nightlife areas and around stations.

Figures in US dollars and approximate, reviewed in September 2026, for one person. Rents move fast in nomad-heavy cities — use these to compare and budget, not as a quote.
