Houston
Aprox. 2,296,224 habitantesApprox. 2,296,224 people
Houston is the largest city in Texas and the fourth in the U.S.: a sprawling, flat metropolis with barely a defined center, the energy capital of the world and home to NASA's mission control. What makes it interesting isn't the skyline but the diversity —it's one of the most multicultural cities in the country— and its food: Tex-Mex, barbecue, one of the largest Vietnamese communities in the U.S. and flavors from around the world. It's car-dependent and hot, but with a world-class museum district.

Houston means driving: freeways everywhere and limited public transit (there's a METRORail light-rail line). Renting a car is practically essential.

¿Cuánto necesitas al mes en Houston? How much do you need per month in Houston?
El internet es de los mejores que vas a tener; la red eléctrica, no.Houston works if your job or your family already bring you here, or if you want a US city with genuinely Latino everyday life, incredible food, and rent cheaper than Austin, Miami, or either coast. It doesn't work as a "let's see what happens" nomad base: it's built for cars, flat and enormous, and from May to September the heat and humidity keep you indoors under the AC. The internet is some of the best you'll ever have; the power grid is not.

You won't suffer here: AT&T fiber covers much of the city with symmetric 1 Gbps plans (and multi-gig in several areas), and where it doesn't reach there's Xfinity cable with fast downloads and much weaker uploads. Video calls, uploading heavy footage, 4K streaming — none of it is an issue. 5G coverage is solid across the metro. The problem isn't the internet, it's the power: the Texas grid is fragile, and when a hurricane or a bad storm hits you can go days without electricity — and no electricity means no router. Have a plan B (battery bank, phone hotspot, a café with a generator). Before you sign, ask which provider actually reaches that specific building: within one neighborhood some addresses have fiber and others only cable.
CoworkingCoworking
Precios típicos: escritorio flexible ≈US$150–250 al mes, escritorio fijo ≈US$300–450, oficina privada bastante más. The scene exists but skews corporate, not nomadic: most spaces are built for energy companies, consultancies, and local startups, not for someone who landed two months ago with a laptop. There are big chains with locations Downtown, near the Galleria, and in The Woodlands, plus friendlier independent spots in Midtown and The Heights; the Ion in Midtown is the city's innovation hub (the old Sears building, rebuilt) and concentrates a lot of the tech crowd and the events. Typical prices: hot desk ≈US$150–250/month, dedicated desk ≈US$300–450, private office considerably more. Careful about working only from cafés: many close early, few are set up for camping out all day, and public wifi is hit or miss.
Montrose is the obvious bet: one of the few genuinely walkable pockets in Houston, with bars, bookstores, restaurants, and a young crowd — pricey by local standards, but it saves you hours of driving. Midtown is newer and tower-heavy, right on the light rail and next to the Ion, good if you work in tech and want to go out on foot. The Heights (Greater Heights) has old wooden bungalows, a running and biking trail, and the best mix of quiet and alive; it leans family but it's widely loved. EaDo (East Downtown) is lofts, breweries, and murals — cheaper and still changing fast. If you want dense Latino life and low rent, Spring Branch (the Long Point corridor) and Gulfton are the most Hispanic parts of the city, but there you really do check block by block before signing.
ComunidadCommunity
Houston is one of the most diverse cities in the United States, and Spanish isn't a "minority" language here: you'll hear it at the grocery store, on job sites, at the clinic, across half the city. If you're coming from Latin America, the cultural and food adjustment is remarkably soft — there are large, established Mexican, Salvadoran, Honduran, Colombian, and Venezuelan communities. What barely exists is a digital-nomad scene: foreigners here came for work (energy, medicine, engineering) or for family, not on a nomad visa, so don't expect the coliving-and-weekly-meetup circuit of people passing through. You meet people through work, the gym, church, Ion events, or sports, and it takes longer than in a classic nomad city. Add that everything is far apart: here friendships are held together by 30-minute drives. Professional day-to-day runs in English.
Three things, and they're serious. One: the weather. May through September means 95 °F-plus with humidity that pushes the feel past 105, and hurricane season runs June 1 to November 30 — Houston genuinely floods, so before you rent, ask whether that address sits in a flood zone and what happened to it in recent storms. After a bad hurricane you can lose power for days. Two: the car. Without one, Houston is punishment; the light rail is three lines and buses don't cover the city. Put insurance, gas, and parking in your budget from day one, and note that Texas car insurance is among the priciest in the country. Three: paperwork and health. The US has no digital nomad visa: entering on ESTA gives you up to 90 days and a tourist visa up to six months, as a visitor — not permission to work or to "live" here. And a medical emergency without insurance can cost you thousands, so don't arrive uncovered. Standard leases are 12 months with credit and income checks, which is why almost everyone here short-term ends up paying the furnished premium. Two more details: Texas has no state income tax, but property taxes are high and they're baked into your rent; and if your lungs are sensitive, the air around the Ship Channel and the east side carries a real petrochemical load.
Figures in US dollars and approximate, reviewed in September 2026, for one person. Rents move fast in nomad-heavy cities — use these to compare and budget, not as a quote.
