Atop that green mound, the Thekkinkadu Maidan, stands the great Vadakkunnathan temple dedicated to Shiva, ringed by the city's circular avenue. This is where the Thrissur Pooram is held, the state's most spectacular temple festival, with caparisoned elephants and fireworks. It's also a historic center of the gold trade and of Kerala's performing-arts traditions.
