It's a green city of gentle hills and coconut palms, far calmer and cleaner than the northern metros — a mirror of literate, orderly Kerala. Its heart is the Sri Padmanabhaswamy temple, one of the richest shrines in the world. Just outside lie the beaches of Kovalam and, up the coast, the cliffs of Varkala; it's also home to Technopark, one of India's major tech campuses, which gives it a professional, student pulse.
