It's a mostly Sundanese city, well known across Indonesia for its crafts: hand-painted 'payung geulis' parasols, embroidery (bordir) and batik. The climate is warm and humid year-round, tempered by altitude, and daily life revolves around workshops, markets and mosques rather than tourism. Nearby stands Galunggung volcano, whose 1982 eruption left a crater lake.
