Yakarta

Aprox. 8,540,121 habitantesApprox. 8,540,121 people

Jakarta is a flat, hot, perpetually-under-construction megacity: skyscrapers, giant malls and legendary traffic sit alongside Kota Tua, the old Dutch-colonial Batavia. It's not a city of pretty postcards but of dense urban life; what hooks you is the street food, the third-wave coffee and the energy of a place that never stops. The Monas monument presides over Merdeka Square as its landmark. Budget patience for getting around: short distances eat hours.

Costo de vida nómadaNomad cost of living

¿Cuánto necesitas al mes en Yakarta? How much do you need per month in Yakarta?

Jakarta works if you're here for actual business in Southeast Asia: it's Indonesia's startup capital, food is dirt cheap, specialty coffee is everywhere, and your rent money goes further than in Singapore or Bangkok. It doesn't work if you want the postcard nomad life: no beach, barely any walkable sidewalks, some of the worst traffic on earth, and genuinely bad air quality for months at a time. Also, the actual nomad scene is in Bali, not here — foreigners in Jakarta tend to be corporate expats on local contracts.

Home fiber is solid by regional standards: typical plans run 50–100 Mbps for ≈US$20–35 a month, with faster options in newer buildings. Common providers are Biznet, IndiHome (Telkom), MyRepublic and First Media; quality varies more by building than by brand, so ask which provider actually reaches the unit BEFORE you sign. Mobile 4G coverage is very good citywide (Telkomsel is the most reliable), and 5G exists but is patchy. Two honest caveats. One: latency to Europe and the US is high (on the order of 200 ms or more), so video calls and local browsing are fine, but if your work leans on Western-hosted servers or tools you'll feel the drag. Two: Indonesia blocks sites nationally by ministry order — Reddit and Vimeo have been down for years, along with gambling and porn, and the list changes without notice; nearly everyone keeps a VPN handy. Power cuts aren't a daily thing, though localized outages do happen in the rainy season.

CoworkingCoworking

There's a coworking scene, but it's built for startups and local companies, not for passing nomads: most spaces sit inside malls and office towers in South and Central Jakarta. GoWork is the most visible local chain and Kolega is the more casual, cheaper option; international chains have come and gone here, so confirm a space is still open before you pay (big operators have shut down abruptly in this market). A monthly hot desk runs ≈US$90–180; private offices climb well above that. The alternative half of Jakarta actually uses is working from cafés: there are hundreds with good wifi, AC and outlets, and one coffee buys you hours. Weigh the value carefully — if you'll work from home most days, coworking here is expensive for how little social payoff it delivers.

Kemang (South Jakarta) is the classic expat neighborhood: bars, international restaurants, houses with gardens, relaxed vibe — but no MRT, and getting out of there in traffic is maddening, plus it floods. Senopati / Kebayoran Baru and SCBD are the modern, priciest area: new towers, the best food, and the MRT line running down Sudirman that saves you from traffic; it's where well-paid young professionals live. Kuningan / Setiabudi is the embassy and office district, with plenty of mid-priced furnished apartments and a central location. And Blok M, right by the MRT terminus, is the most local and affordable option: less polished, far more alive at street level, with direct metro access.

ComunidadCommunity

Jakarta isn't a nomad city, it's a work city, and that changes how you meet people. There is a large foreign community, but it's mostly corporate (embassies, multinationals, mining, consulting) and it moves in fairly closed circles around Kemang and SCBD. The upside: the tech and startup scene is among the strongest in Southeast Asia, so there are regular product, dev and founder meetups, and they're very welcoming to foreigners. Indonesians are extraordinarily warm and social — making local friends is easy if you make the effort. The everyday language is Bahasa Indonesia; English works fine in offices, malls and expat areas, but with Grab drivers, landlords and warungs you'll need the basics (and Bahasa is one of the easiest languages to start). Spanish-speaking community: very small, basically embassy-linked. Don't count on it.

Lo que nadie te diceWhat nobody tells you

Three things will hit you that nobody warns you about. First, the air: Jakarta regularly ranks among the world's most polluted cities, especially in the dry season; if you have asthma or allergies this is not a minor detail — plenty of people run an air purifier at home. Second, the traffic: it's not a joke, it's the thing that defines your daily life. Pick your apartment by whether you can walk to the MRT, not by the photos; five miles can take over an hour at rush hour. Third, cash up front: it's normal here for a landlord to ask for 6 or 12 months of rent paid in one go for an apartment; if you can't front that, your options are a kos or a serviced apartment, which bill monthly but cost more. Add the rainy season (roughly November to March) with real flooding in low-lying areas, dengue spiking in those months, year-round heat and humidity with no cool season, and alcohol made expensive by excise taxes. On visas: Indonesia has a remote worker permit (the E33G) that lets you live here legally while working for companies outside Indonesia, but it requires proof of a high annual income — a figure on the order of US$60,000 has been cited. Working on a tourist visa isn't permitted, however many people do it. Check current requirements and amounts at imigrasi.go.id before you book a flight, because Indonesian visa rules change often.

Figures in US dollars and approximate, reviewed in September 2026, for one person.
