Medan

Medan is the capital of North Sumatra and the largest city on the island of Sumatra, Indonesia. It's a crossroads of cultures: the Malay Deli Sultanate, plus Chinese and Indian communities that left temples, mansions and a cuisine of their own. It's usually sold as a gateway to the best of North Sumatra —vast Lake Toba and the orangutans of Bukit Lawang— but it has its own heritage: the sultan's Maimun Palace, the grand Al-Mashun Mosque and the mansion of Tjong A Fie, the city's Chinese magnate.

¿Cuánto necesitas al mes en Medan? How much do you need per month in Medan?

Medan works if what you want is real, cheap Indonesia: you eat spectacularly well for a couple of dollars, rent is among the lowest in Southeast Asia, and Lake Toba, Berastagi and the Bukit Lawang jungle are a few hours away. It doesn't work if you're expecting a nomad scene, because there basically isn't one: almost nobody comes here to work remotely, coworking is minimal, and without some Bahasa Indonesia you'll feel isolated. Add year-round heat and humidity, heavy traffic and almost no sidewalks: this is a city for living cheap and eating well, not for the postcard.

Home fiber is usually IndiHome (Telkom), with typical plans of 30 to 100 Mbps; several condos offer alternatives like Biznet or MyRepublic, generally more stable — check what actually reaches the building before you sign. Download speeds usually deliver, upload is noticeably weaker, so heavy file uploads or live streaming can frustrate you. On mobile, Telkomsel has the most reliable coverage in Sumatra; 5G is marginal, but 4G is more than enough for video calls. Expect occasional PLN power cuts, more frequent in the rainy season, and very uneven café wifi: always keep mobile data as a backup before you book an important call. One thing that catches people off guard: Indonesia filters sites at the ISP level (Reddit and Vimeo have been blocked for years, along with gambling and adult content), so arrive with a VPN already installed.

CoworkingCoworking

The scene is genuinely thin: there's a handful of spaces, aimed mostly at local startups, students and the creative community rather than passing foreigners, and they open and close easily, so confirm one is still running before you count on it. The city also has a locally government-backed creative hub that sometimes doubles as a work space, but don't assume it. In practice almost everyone works from cafés: the mall ones (Sun Plaza, Centre Point, Cambridge) have AC and outlets, and the Jl. Dr. Mansyur and Setia Budi area is full of independent cafés with good Sumatran coffee. The catch is the noise, and that "laptop friendly" etiquette doesn't really exist here: at peak hours they expect you to free up the table.

Medan Petisah and Sekip are the most practical if you want to be central: markets, food at all hours, and condos that actually rent by the month. Medan Polonia and the Jl. Iskandar Muda corridor is the more affluent, orderly side, right by Sun Plaza and the big towers, good if you prioritize quiet and services. Jl. Dr. Mansyur and Setia Budi, around Universitas Sumatera Utara, is where people who want to spend little live: cafés, cheap food, a young crowd and clearly lower rents. And Cemara Asri, north of the city in Deli Serdang, is a quiet gated complex full of Chinese-Indonesian families and corporate expats, but you're far from everything and it doesn't work without a car or scooter.

ComunidadCommunity

There's no nomad community worth looking for. The foreigners who live here are mostly palm oil and plantation people, NGOs, missionaries and English teachers, and they organize through Facebook and WhatsApp groups more than meetups. Spanish-speaking community: essentially zero, assume it. Daily life runs in Bahasa Indonesia; English gets you through malls, hotels and younger people, but not the warung or the Gojek driver. The good news is that Bahasa is one of the easiest languages to start, and Medan is a very mixed, very sociable city: a large Chinese-Indonesian community, a Tamil community in Kampung Madras, Bataks, Javanese, Malays. Make even a small effort with the language and you get invited to things fast.

Three things will hit you before your budget does. One, the climate: heat and humidity year-round, highs around 32°C, and a heavy rainy season roughly September to December, with localized flooding in the low-lying areas along the Deli and Babura rivers. Two, getting around: angkot (minibuses) and some city bus routes do exist, but with no legible routes or clear schedules, almost no sidewalks and chaotic traffic, so in practice you depend on Gojek and Grab or your own scooter; if you've never ridden one, Medan is not the place to learn. Add that Kualanamu airport sits about 40 km out, genuinely far. Three, rentals: many landlords, especially for kos and houses, want the full year upfront; monthly exists in condos but costs more, and everything gets negotiated in person, not over WhatsApp. On visas: most people enter on a 30-day visa on arrival, extendable once for another 30 days, and if you want to stay legally longer while working remotely there's a remote-worker permit (KITAS E33G) that requires proving a high annual income, in the tens of thousands of dollars; check the current requirements at the official immigration source before you plan, because they change often. Two smaller warnings: watch for bag snatching from motorbikes (jambret), don't walk with your phone out; and although there are decent private hospitals, plenty of people fly to Penang, Malaysia, an hour away, for anything medically serious.

Figures in US dollars and approximate, reviewed in September 2026, for one person. Rents move fast in nomad-heavy cities — use these to compare and budget, not as a quote.
