Tamale is northern Ghana's main city and a commercial crossroads for the savanna. ¿Cuánto necesitas al mes en Tamale? How much do you need per month in Tamale?

Tamale is the capital of Ghana's north: genuinely cheap, calm, mostly Muslim, and built around the market, the motorbike and the heat. It works if you arrive with your work already sorted (NGO, research, something remote with flexible hours) and don't mind that there's no nomad scene — because there isn't one. It doesn't work if you need stable fibre, cafés with power outlets, or a month-to-month lease: in Ghana landlords ask for 6 to 12 months of rent up front, and your internet is 4G on top of power cuts.

Forget fibre: in Tamale almost everyone's actual connection is MTN 4G (Telecel and AT a distant second), through a router or a phone hotspot. Fixed-wireless broadband is sold, but coverage is patchy neighbourhood by neighbourhood — check the exact street before you commit to anything. On a good day you'll see ≈5–20 Mbps and video calls hold up; at peak hours, in heavy rain, or out in the further neighbourhoods it drops to something uncomfortable. The bigger problem is power: Ghana has recurring outages ("dumsor") that come and go in waves, so if your work depends on being online you need a big power bank, an inverter, or a shared generator in the building. Mobile coverage is decent across the city and thin as soon as you hit the highway.

CoworkingCoworking

There's no coworking market here the way you'd know it in Bali or Medellín. What exists are tech/innovation spaces tied to NGOs, entrepreneurship programmes and the university (UDS), which open and close with the funding cycle — I can't give you a name I'm confident will still be running when you land, so I won't. In practice people work from home, from their organisation's office, or from a hotel restaurant with a generator. Plan on setting up your own desk at home and solving power and internet yourself; ask around in NGO circles once you're there rather than assuming anything from abroad.

Foreigners here (NGO staff, missionaries, academics, consultants) cluster in a handful of areas: Kalpohin / Kalpohin Estates, quiet with better-built houses; the Russian Bungalows area and Education Ridge, near Tamale Teaching Hospital and the schools — the classic expat choice; Vittin / Vittin Estate, newer construction with good access; and Gumani or Choggu, newer and cheaper but further out. The market core (Aboabo, Lamashegu, Nyohini) is where the city actually beats: cheap and everything within reach, but dense, loud, and almost no outsiders live there.

ComunidadCommunity

There is no nomad community, full stop. The foreign population is here for work: development, health, agricultural research, missionaries and volunteers, plus UDS lecturers and students — they all know each other and gather in the same five or six houses and hotels. Big advantage: English is the official language and covers everything formal, so you're not mute from day one. But the street, the market and real life run in Dagbani; learning the greetings ("Dasiba" in the morning, "Naa" as a reply) changes how you're treated, dramatically. It's a hospitable city: make one friend and you inherit their whole family. Spanish speakers: essentially none.

Three things will hit you before the budget does. One: rent is paid up front. In Ghana it's normal for a landlord to ask for 6, 12, even 24 months in one go — the law caps it at six months and in practice that's ignored. Budget for that opening hit or negotiate it in writing. Two: the climate runs the show. March–April pushes past 40 °C; December–February brings the harmattan, a dry dust-laden wind that shreds your throat and gets inside laptops; rain runs roughly May–October, peaking August–September. Three: water. Tamale has a chronic supply problem; plenty of people live off polytanks, tanker deliveries and sachet water, and in the dry season it genuinely runs short. Add year-round malaria (net and prophylaxis, seriously), the yellow fever certificate they ask for on entry, a cedi that moves a lot — every dollar figure here is indicative, mine included — and the fact that Ghana has no digital nomad visa: you enter as a tourist and extend with the Immigration Service, which in practice gets sorted in Accra (there's a regional office, but confirm before relying on it). The city itself is calm, but check before travelling around the region: there have been tensions and occasional curfews in northern towns, and the Bawku area and the strip toward the Burkina Faso border are not for overland trips. And as a majority-Muslim city, Ramadan changes the rhythm of the whole day — respect it.

Figures in US dollars and approximate, reviewed in September 2026, for one person. Rents move fast in nomad-heavy cities — use these to compare and budget, not as a quote.
