Takoradi is the port half of the twin city Sekondi-Takoradi, capital of Ghana's Western Region on the Gulf of Guinea. It was the country's first deep-water port and today it's the heart of Ghana's oil industry, ever since crude was discovered offshore in the Jubilee field. It's a city of work, tropical heat and coastal vibe rather than tourist monuments. A good base to explore the western coast and the region's old slave-trade forts.

¿Cuánto necesitas al mes en Takoradi? How much do you need per month in Takoradi?
Takoradi (or Sekondi-Takoradi — they're twin cities) is Ghana's oil capital: a port, the logistics base for offshore work, a city that works rather than poses. It fits you if you want somewhere calm and unpretentious, with English as the official language, surf beaches an hour away (Busua) and dirt-cheap local food. It doesn't fit if you need a remote-work ecosystem: nearly every foreigner here is oil & gas staff with company-paid housing, there's no coworking scene, the power cuts out, and landlords will ask you for one or two years of rent upfront.

Fixed internet exists but coverage is patchy and goes street by street: Telecel (formerly Vodafone Ghana) and MTN reach much of Takoradi's residential areas, and there you'll get something like 20–60 Mbps — fine for video calls as long as you're not sharing the line. Outside that perimeter you're on LTE, which holds up during the day and buckles at peak hours. The real problem isn't bandwidth, it's power: outages ("dumsor") have come back repeatedly in recent years, and without an inverter or generator your router dies even when the line is perfect. Before signing any lease, ask two things: does the building have a generator or inverter, and which provider actually reaches that exact street (your neighbor having fiber doesn't mean they'll install yours). Get an MTN SIM and a second Telecel one — mobile coverage changes from block to block and having both will save you meetings. Mobile data is expensive compared to Latin America.
CoworkingCoworking
No sugarcoating: there is no coworking scene here. Accra has established hubs; Takoradi doesn't. Small spaces tied to the technical university and to entrepreneurship programs have opened and closed, so there may be something running when you arrive or there may not — don't move here counting on it, and check with people on the ground before booking the flight. In practice, people working remotely here do it from home, or from the lobbies and cafés of the oil-sector hotels, which have decent wifi, air conditioning, their own generator, and won't kick you out if you order something. Budget for an inverter or UPS at your desk before a coworking membership: it'll do far more for you.
Airport Ridge is where most foreigners live: houses with yards, quiet streets, close to the airport and the oil-sector offices, and the priciest square meter in town. Anaji and the corridor toward Kwesimintsim are the Ghanaian upper-middle-class version: newer, constantly under construction, somewhat better prices and more street life. Chapel Hill and Beach Road, next to the center and the port, mix offices, hotels and apartments — convenient if you don't want to depend on taxis for everything, though noisier. Effiakuma and the local neighborhoods are far cheaper and where the city actually lives, but almost no foreigner ends up there. And there's a different crowd of outsiders who don't live in Takoradi at all but in Busua and Butre, an hour west: surfers, NGO people and the occasional remote worker who puts up with weaker internet in exchange for living on the beach.
ComunidadCommunity
The huge upside: English is the official language and it's used everywhere, so from day one you can handle paperwork, rent and work without a barrier. On the street you'll hear Fante (Akan), and learning four greetings genuinely opens doors. Now the honest part: there is no nomad community. The foreign population is mostly corporate — engineers, offshore contractors, port logistics people, missionaries and NGOs — moving in closed circles of company, church and sports club, with high turnover and offshore rotation schedules. Spanish-speaking community: essentially nil, don't count on finding anyone to speak Spanish with. Ghanaians are among the most welcoming people on the continent and meeting people day to day is easy; what's hard is finding others who work remotely like you. If you need that tribe, your plan is a weekend in Accra once a month (about 4–5 hours by road, or a short flight).
First and most expensive: in Ghana landlords ask for rent upfront, typically one or two full years, whatever the rent law says. That turns a "US$400 a month" apartment into a several-thousand-dollar opening payment, and it's the number one reason people call off the move. Arrive on a short stay in a furnished place or Airbnb and negotiate slowly; never pay upfront without seeing the place and having a written contract. Second, this is an oil town: in the areas where expats live, prices are inflated because companies pay their staff's housing, so you'll pay noticeably more than in other Ghanaian cities of the same size. Visa: Ghana has no digital nomad visa and most non-African passports need one arranged before travel, with extensions handled at the Ghana Immigration Service office — confirm your case with the embassy, since the rules have changed several times in recent years. A yellow fever certificate is mandatory and they do check. Health: serious malaria territory, year-round — travel clinic before you go, net and repellent from night one; for anything major, people transfer to Accra. Money: the cedi is very volatile — it collapsed through 2022–2023 and then appreciated sharply in 2025 — so any cedi price you read from a year ago is worthless in either direction, which is why everything here is quoted in dollars and why you should renegotiate cedi prices on the spot. Almost everything is paid with MTN Mobile Money, so set it up as soon as you have a SIM. Weather: humid heat year-round, and the Western Region is one of the rainiest parts of Ghana — the heavy season around May–June with flooded streets, plus a shorter one in October; the December–February harmattan is barely felt here on the coast. Safety: calm by port-city standards, but watch for opportunistic theft, avoid walking around the port area at night, and don't jump into any random taxi in the small hours.
Figures in US dollars and approximate, reviewed in September 2026, for one person. Rents move fast in nomad-heavy cities — use these to compare and budget, not as a quote.
