Accra

Aprox. 1,963,264 habitantesApprox. 1,963,264 people

Accra is the capital of Ghana and one of West Africa's liveliest, most accessible cities, facing the Gulf of Guinea. It has an unusual mix of colonial history (Atlantic forts tied to the slave trade), pan-African pride — Ghana was the first sub-Saharan colony to gain independence, in 1957 — and a young creative scene of music, fashion and art. It sits just a few degrees off the equator, so it's hot and humid year-round, with two rainy seasons and a dry spell marked by the harmattan, the Sahara's dry wind. English is spoken, which makes it easy for visitors. Food centers on jollof rice, banku and grilled fish.

Mejor épocaBest time

The dry season, November to March, is most comfortable; the harmattan brings dry, dusty air. Avoid the May-June peak of rains.

PresupuestoBudget

Ronda 900-1.400 USD/mes.Moderate for West Africa: street food is very cheap, but lodging and transport for foreigners climb fast. Roughly $900-1,400/month.

EntradaEntry

Most nationalities need a visa (e-visa available) and a yellow fever vaccination certificate is usually required. Ghana has eased entry for Africans.

Tro-tros (shared minibuses) are the cheap, popular network, but chaotic; for direct trips use apps like Bolt or Uber, both widespread.

¿Cuánto necesitas al mes en Accra? How much do you need per month in Accra?

Accra works for you if you want an African base where daily life happens entirely in English, with a young tech scene, seriously good food, and a huge diaspora community that folds you in fast. It does not work if you want cheap or dependable infrastructure: housing in the areas where foreigners actually live costs like a mid-size European city, landlords typically demand a full year of rent upfront, and the power goes out often enough that you need a backup plan. It's a city you either fall for or fight with — rarely anything in between.

In the good neighborhoods (Osu, Cantonments, Airport, East Legon) there's fiber, and it's generally fine for video calls: think tens of megabits, with real-world speeds below the advertised number and varying by time of day. A home plan runs about ≈US$40-70/month, though it varies a lot by provider and package — check with the landlord, since many furnished apartments already include it. Mobile 4G coverage across the city is solid, and MTN is the network most people use for reach — keep a loaded data SIM as your backup (5G is only just appearing in Accra; don't count on it). The real problem isn't bandwidth, it's electricity: power cuts (Ghanaians call it "dumsor") still happen and they take your router down with them. Filter apartments by whether they have an inverter or a generator — that matters more than the speed on the contract. One data point to calibrate expectations: in March 2024 several Atlantic subsea cables were cut and much of West Africa, Ghana included, had crawling or no internet for days.

CoworkingCoworking

The scene exists and it's tied to the tech and startup ecosystem, not to nomad tourism: these spaces are full of Ghanaian founders and developers more than laptop-and-tourist-visa types. Impact Hub Accra, in the Osu/Labone area, is the best-known name and has been running for years; MEST (Meltwater Entrepreneurial School of Technology), in East Legon, is more of an incubator and school than an open coworking space, but it runs events you can drop into. Around those there's a layer of smaller spaces, cafés and hotels renting desks that open and close fairly often — better to confirm them once you're on the ground than to trust an old list. A monthly hot desk runs about ≈US$80-180, with a lot of variation by area and whether meeting rooms are included. Practical selection criterion: ask about the generator and the A/C before you ask about the coffee.

Osu is the default landing spot: it's the most walkable part of Accra, with Oxford Street, bars, restaurants, and the deepest supply of short-term furnished rentals. Labone and Cantonments sit right next door — quieter, residential, embassies and good restaurants — and it's where a lot of people move once they've had enough of Osu's noise; they cost more. Airport Residential Area is the clearly expensive zone: big houses, close to the malls and the airport, with prices sometimes quoted straight in dollars. East Legon is where upper-middle-class Ghanaians and a lot of long-stay foreigners live: you get more space for your money, but you pay for it in traffic time every time you head downtown. If you want to cut rent without going to the far end, look at Dzorwulu or Abelemkpe, roughly halfway to everything.

ComunidadCommunity

Meeting people is easy, mostly because language is never the barrier: English is the official language and everything day to day — paperwork, the Bolt driver, the waiter, your landlord — happens in English. There's a very large and very active African-American diaspora community, which grew a lot after the 2019 "Year of Return" campaign, and it runs events, parties, and business groups you can walk into as a nobody. Add the tech and creative scene, with meetups, demo days, and a huge amount of music and art, plus the Lebanese, Indian, and NGO/embassy crowds. What you will barely find is a Spanish-speaking community: if you need to speak Spanish every day, this isn't your city. Learn two words of Twi ("akwaaba" is welcome) and use "chale" the way you'd use "mate" — it opens doors faster than you'd expect.

First and biggest: the rental system. In Accra it's normal for a landlord to ask for one or two years of rent upfront, in cash, before handing over keys — that's the standard practice, not a scam aimed at you as a foreigner. Ghana's rent law caps advances at six months, but in practice almost nobody follows or enforces it. Which means "renting cheap" here requires putting thousands of dollars down at once; that's why many people start in Airbnbs or serviced apartments, which cost more per month but skip that lump sum. Second: the cedi. The currency has been genuinely volatile — years of sharp depreciation and high inflation, plus abrupt swings the other way — so a price quoted in cedis six months ago may mean nothing today; budget in dollars and renegotiate. Third: power. Outages are real and part of life; if your work depends on being online, an inverter isn't a luxury. Fourth, health: Accra is a malaria zone (talk to a doctor about prophylaxis before you go, and take repellent seriously), and Ghana requires proof of yellow fever vaccination to enter. Fifth, visas: Ghana has no digital nomad visa, and most non-African passports need to arrange one BEFORE flying (Ghana has opened visa-free entry to African passport holders, which won't help you if you aren't one) — don't show up assuming you'll get one on landing; confirm with the consulate that covers you. And finally, everyday stuff: traffic is brutal and can eat two hours crossing town, heat and humidity are constant year-round, the harmattan blows Saharan dust over everything from December to February, don't drink the tap water (people drink bottled or sachet water, the famous "pure water"), and at night take a Bolt instead of walking through unlit areas — Accra is one of the calmer capitals in the region, but opportunistic theft happens.

Figures in US dollars and approximate, reviewed in September 2026, for one person. Rents move fast in nomad-heavy cities — use these to compare and budget, not as a quote.
