Surat sits in Gujarat, on India's west coast, on the Tapi River near where it meets the Arabian Sea. It was one of the great trading ports of Mughal India, a departure point for pilgrims and merchants, and today it's an industrial giant: the vast majority of the world's diamonds are cut and polished here, and it's also a huge textile center (synthetic silk and prints). A prosperous, fast-growing working city with its own sweet, tasty Gujarati food. Hot climate with a pronounced monsoon.

Mejor épocaBest time

November to February, the dry and cooler season. The pre-monsoon summer is very hot and the monsoon (June-September) brings heavy rain.

Surat polishes close to nine in ten of the world's diamonds. Not a tourist attraction as such, but it's what defines the city and its huge prosperity.

Dumas Beach

The black-sand beach on the Arabian Sea just outside town, hugely popular with locals for its evening food stalls.

Comida guyaratí de Surat

El 'locho', el 'undhiyu' invernal y los dulces y frituras surtíes hacen de esta una de las ciudades más golosas y foodies de Gujarat.'Locho', winter 'undhiyu' and Surti sweets and fried snacks make this one of the most food-obsessed cities in Gujarat.

¿Cuánto necesitas al mes en Sūrat? How much do you need per month in Sūrat?

Surat is at once one of India's richest and cheapest cities: the world capital of diamond polishing and synthetic textiles, money everywhere and zero nomad scene. It works if your priority is spending almost nothing while working remotely and you don't mind being the only foreigner on the block — fiber is good and cheap, and Surat ranks year after year among India's best-scoring cities in the official urban cleanliness surveys. It doesn't work if you need community, day-to-day English, nightlife (Gujarat is a dry state, no alcohol sales) or a break from the heat: April to June this is a humid oven.

This is Surat's best news. Home fiber (Jio, Airtel and several local ISPs) gives you 100-300 Mbps for ≈US$10-20 a month, with upload good enough for video calls; entry plans at 30-50 Mbps cost even less. Gujarat has one of the country's more stable power grids, so blackouts aren't the daily drama they are in other states — but monsoon brings occasional outages, and a UPS or a big power bank saves a meeting. Mobile 4G/5G coverage is excellent and absurdly cheap: carry two carriers if you work to deadlines. Two honest catches: signing up for fiber as a foreigner means KYC paperwork (passport, visa, proof of address), so many people spend the first weeks on the landlord's wifi or a hotspot; and India does block sites and occasionally orders local internet shutdowns during unrest or exams — rare in Surat, but not impossible. A VPN is legal and worth installing before you arrive.

CoworkingCoworking

Coworkings exist — Surat has a fairly active trading and startup economy — but I can't give you names with confidence, so find them on the map when you arrive instead of trusting a list; the logical place to look is the newer Vesu, Piplod and Ring Road corridor, where the offices are. A dedicated desk runs ≈US$50-90 a month, a hot desk considerably less. The scene is local founders and software, diamond and textile teams, not passing nomads: don't expect English-language events or international networking. Plenty of remote workers here just work from home, because with fiber at that price coworking becomes a social luxury rather than a need.

Vesu is the new, well-off district: modern towers, wide avenues, restaurants and the best-equipped apartments in the city — where almost any foreigner ends up. Piplod, right next to Vesu, is similar and a bit quieter. Adajan, across the Tapi, is settled middle class and gives you better value per square meter. City Light and Athwalines, along the Ghod Dod Road axis, are more central and traditionally home to well-off families, everything at hand but more traffic and noise. Varachha and Katargam are the heart of the diamond trade, dirt cheap and extremely dense, but not where you want to live if you work online; the old town near the textile market is fascinating to walk and pretty unlivable.

ComunidadCommunity

Let's be clear: there is no nomad community here. You'll barely cross paths with other foreigners, and the ones around are usually diamond or textile business people on short trips, moving in their own circuit. Spanish speakers, essentially none. Daily life happens in Gujarati and Hindi; offices, private hospitals and Vesu shops handle English fine, but the rickshaw driver, the market and your neighbor don't. The flip side is that Surat is a city of internal migrants (from Saurashtra, Odisha, Bihar), extremely social and family-driven: let yourself be invited into a Gujarati home and you'll eat well and make friends fast. It's just that friendship gets built there, not at a nomad meetup that doesn't exist.

Lo que nadie te diceWhat nobody tells you

Tres cosas duras. Three hard things. First, the weather: April to June brings days over 40 °C with coastal humidity, and June to September brings the monsoon; the Tapi has flooded Surat badly (the 2006 flood was devastating), so don't rent a ground floor near the river and ask about the area's history. Second, India has no digital nomad visa: you enter on a tourist or business e-visa, which doesn't authorize working for an Indian company, stays per entry usually run 30 to 90 days depending on your nationality, and visas longer than 180 days require registering with the FRRO — sort that out before you book, not after. Third, Gujarat is a dry state: no bars, no alcohol sales, and foreigners have to apply for a special permit if they want it. Add air quality that worsens in winter and around the dyeing industry; standard 11-month rental contracts with two or three months' deposit plus a broker fee; and the fact that almost none of practical daily life runs in English. It's not an air hub either: Surat's airport is mostly domestic, and for long-haul you'll usually end up going to Mumbai, about 4-5 hours away by train. It's cheap and safe, but it asks you to adapt to it, not the other way around.

Figures in US dollars and approximate, reviewed in September 2026, for one person. Rents move fast in nomad-heavy cities — use these to compare and budget, not as a quote.
