St. Louis rises on the banks of the Mississippi River, in Missouri, and its skyline is unmistakable: the Gateway Arch, the 630-foot stainless-steel arch celebrating the U.S. westward expansion. It was a great industrial and brewing city (Anheuser-Busch was born here), and today it blends that legacy with a huge urban park, free museums and a strong neighborhood identity. It's also a baseball city devoted to its Cardinals, with dishes as local as toasted ravioli and Ted Drewes frozen custard. Neighborhoods like The Hill (Italian) and the Delmar Loop give it character.

Costo de vida nómadaNomad cost of living

¿Cuánto necesitas al mes en St. Louis? How much do you need per month in St. Louis?

St. Louis is one of the cheapest big US cities to actually live in: rents around half of Chicago or Austin, gorgeous old brick housing stock, and a food, beer and museum scene way above the city's weight class (the zoo and the Art Museum are genuinely free). It works if you need a base *inside* the US — Central time zone, solid fiber, decent domestic flights — and you don't mind driving. It doesn't work if you want an international nomad city: the foreign nomad community barely exists, transit is weak, and safety shifts hard from neighborhood to neighborhood, sometimes block to block.

This is where St. Louis does well: real AT&T fiber covers much of the city — symmetric gigabit for ≈US$75–90/month — with Spectrum cable as the near-universal alternative (fast download, much slower upload, which you feel on video calls and big uploads). Watch out for the old housing stock: plenty of older buildings and houses still have no fiber and leave you on cable, so check the exact address before signing, not just the neighborhood. Day-to-day stability is good and advertised speeds generally hold up. 5G mobile coverage is solid across the metro. The weak link isn't the internet, it's the power: summer thunderstorms and winter ice knock out electricity now and then, sometimes for hours and occasionally longer. If your work can't go down, keep a battery for the router and mobile data as backup.

CoworkingCoworking

Small but real scene, almost all of it clustered in the Cortex innovation district between Central West End and The Grove. That's where Venture Café runs its Thursday evening gathering — open and free, and by far the easiest way to meet people working in tech here — and where the big startup and biotech space (CIC St. Louis) sits. Downtown you'll find T-REX, the city's long-running incubator, with fairly gentle hot-desk pricing. Expect ≈US$150–250/month for a flex desk; a private office costs quite a bit more. One practical note: US coworking spaces open and close fast, so call ahead and confirm the one you're counting on is still operating. Plenty of people also just work from cafés — good ones in Tower Grove, Cherokee Street and The Grove — and from public libraries, including the downtown Central Library, which is free and architecturally stunning. Heads up: cafés fill fast and finding an outlet is a contact sport.

Central West End is the safe bet: genuinely walkable, right against Forest Park and the huge Washington University medical campus, with restaurants, beautiful buildings and a MetroLink stop. It's among the priciest parts of the city and still cheap by US standards. The Grove / Forest Park Southeast is the younger, slightly cheaper version, with bars and nightlife, and walking distance to Cortex if you'll be coworking there. Tower Grove South and South Grand is where you'd live for value: tree-lined streets, brick houses, the city's best international food corridor and a huge park next door. Soulard and Lafayette Square are 19th-century historic housing near downtown, very photogenic, with bar life in Soulard. If you'd rather have polished suburb and an amenity building, Clayton — separate municipality out in the county, pricier and corporate-feeling, but comfortable and safe. Downtown is the classic trap: huge cheap lofts, but it empties out at night and a chunk of the office stock sits half-abandoned.

ComunidadCommunity

Don't come expecting an international nomad community, because there isn't one: St. Louis is a regular American city where the remote workers are locals, not people passing through. Day-to-day language is English and you'll need it; Spanish alone won't get you far outside certain businesses. That said, there is a rooted Hispanic community: Cherokee Street is the city's Mexican corridor — taquerías, bakeries, businesses, murals — and the obvious place to hear Spanish and build a network. St. Louis also has one of the largest Bosnian communities in the US, historically concentrated around Bevo Mill, which gives the city a surprising immigrant texture. To meet people: Thursday Venture Café at Cortex, Meetup, rec sports leagues, and neighborhood events (people here are fiercely into their neighborhood). The honest social caveat: many locals grew up here and their circles date back to high school — there's literally a local joke that the first thing you get asked is "where'd you go to high school?" — so breaking in takes more initiative than it would in a transient city.

Four things before you commit to anything. Safety is hyper-local. St. Louis has spent years on the list of US cities with the highest homicide rates — numbers have dropped a lot recently, but the ranking is still bad — and the violence is heavily concentrated geographically, mostly on the north side; the rest of the city feels ordinary. The Delmar line, what people call the "Delmar Divide", splits two visibly different cities in income and housing condition. Don't sign off photos: walk the block by day and by night, and talk to neighbors. The car and the utilities. MetroLink is two lines serving one corridor, not the city; outside Central West End, The Grove and parts of South City you'll need a car — add ≈US$250–400/month for insurance, gas and maintenance (in the budgets above, the lean one assumes car-free living in a walkable area, the comfortable one already includes it). Add power, water and gas too, which spike in high summer with the A/C running. Taxes, health and visas. The City of St. Louis charges a 1% local earnings tax on people who live or work inside city limits (live in Clayton or another county suburb and it doesn't apply): small money, but know about it now, not in April. Neither budget includes health insurance, and in the US that isn't optional: an accident without coverage is genuine financial ruin, so arrive with serious international cover from day one. And there is no US digital nomad visa: ESTA or a tourist visa gives you a short stay and does not authorize working for US employers — if this is going to be your base, talk to an immigration lawyer before, not after. Weather and leases. Brutally hot, humid summers, icy winters, and a real spring storm season: this is genuine tornado country (in May 2025 a tornado tore across the city, killing people and damaging thousands of buildings on the north side and around Forest Park; some blocks are still being repaired). And standard leases run 12 months: breaking one costs, and furnished short-term comes at a premium.

Figures in US dollars and approximate, reviewed in September 2026, for one person. Rents move fast in nomad-heavy cities — use these to compare and budget, not as a quote.
