It sits in the narrow corridor that ties India's northeast to the rest of the country, at the foot of the Himalayas and a short hop from the borders of Nepal, Bhutan and Bangladesh. Almost everyone heading up to Darjeeling, Kalimpong or Sikkim passes through: New Jalpaiguri (NJP) station and Bagdogra airport funnel the whole region. Around it stretch the tea gardens of the Terai and the Dooars. It's a transit town, loud and commercial, but with green hills always poking up behind it.
