San Francisco is pure contrast: impossible hills with Victorian houses, fog that swallows the Golden Gate, the world's tech mecca and, at the same time, the starkest US inequality on the same block. As expensive as it gets and cold-foggy in midsummer, but with a beauty and innovative energy that hook you.

¿Cuánto necesitas al mes en San Francisco? How much do you need per month in San Francisco?

San Francisco works as a nomad base if you earn in dollars, earn well, and you're here for the scene: it's probably the densest concentration on earth of people building startups and AI, and that doesn't replicate elsewhere. It does not work if your plan is to stretch a budget — it's one of the most expensive cities on the planet, and a month here costs what a quarter costs in Medellín or Bangkok. Internet and coworking are world-class; the problem is never the infrastructure, it's the bill.

Internet is simply not a problem here. Real fiber exists: Sonic (a Bay Area ISP) and AT&T Fiber deliver gigabit or better for ≈US$50-90/month, though neither covers the whole city; where fiber doesn't reach you fall back to Xfinity cable — pricier, with far slower upload. One very San Francisco caveat: old Victorian buildings sometimes only have cable or DSL, so ask about the exact address, not the neighborhood, before you sign. Mobile 5G coverage is good citywide, though it drops in BART tunnels and parts of the Muni subway. PG&E's preventive shutoffs hit wooded parts of Northern California, not the city; outages here are rare.

CoworkingCoworking

Extremely dense scene — maybe the most professional anywhere — and expensive to match. WeWork has locations around SoMa and the Financial District, Industrious and Spaces play in the same league, and Canopy is the pretty, pricier option. A hot desk runs ≈US$300-450/month; private offices climb fast. What actually sets San Francisco apart isn't the desk, it's what happens around it: hackathons, demo days and AI meetups nearly every night, many of them free. Café work is possible but inconsistent — in the Mission and Hayes Valley at peak hours a three-hour table hog isn't welcome, and several cafés limit or kill the wifi on weekends. The main public library, by Civic Center, is a free and decent fallback.

The Mission is the classic pick for foreigners: one of the sunniest parts of the city (the fog barely reaches it), with the best cheap food, real nightlife, and Spanish on the street — in exchange, certain blocks are rough at night. Hayes Valley and NoPa are the sweet spot for people here for the tech scene: walkable, cafés, restaurants, lots of hacker houses and coliving, high prices. Russian Hill and Nob Hill are pretty and well connected, but they run into the Tenderloin on their southern edge (that strip gets called the "Tendernob") — check the exact block, not the neighborhood. And the Outer Sunset and Richmond are the move if you want to pay less and have beach and park: several hundred dollars a month cheaper on rent, but fog, cold, and 30-45 minutes to downtown.

ComunidadCommunity

Meeting people is easier here than almost anywhere, as long as you work the event circuit: meetups, hackathons and demo days nearly every day, and the social default is that a stranger asks what you're working on within two minutes. Day-to-day language is English and you'll miss half of it without it; that said, Spanish is a street language in the Mission, with a large, long-established Latino community — not just nomads. The honest downside: it's a transient, work-obsessed city — acquaintances take a week, real friends take a lot longer, and plenty of people move away within a year.

Money first: run the numbers before you come, because San Francisco punishes improvising. And the listed price isn't what you pay — sales tax (≈8.6%) gets added on top, plus an effectively mandatory 18-20% tip and, at many restaurants in the city, an extra surcharge on the bill to cover employee healthcare. Second, the visa: on ESTA you get up to 90 days (with a B1/B2 visa you're usually admitted for up to six months) and you cannot work for a US company; remote work for your foreign clients is a tolerated gray area, but at immigration say you're a tourist and have an onward ticket. Third, the lease: standard rentals are 12 months with a credit check and US rental history you don't have — which is why nearly every nomad ends up in a furnished sublet, at a hefty premium. Fourth, safety: it's not the war zone the internet describes, but open drug use and hard street conditions are real in the Tenderloin, parts of SoMa and some Mission blocks, and car break-ins are a serious problem — never leave anything visible in a car, not even an empty backpack. Fifth, the weather lies: July and August are cold and foggy, September and October are the beautiful months; bring a jacket even in summer. Last, healthcare: without insurance, a doctor's visit or an ER trip here is among the most expensive on earth — don't arrive uncovered.

Figures in US dollars and approximate, reviewed in September 2026, for one person. Rents move fast in nomad-heavy cities — use these to compare and budget, not as a quote.
