Reno
Aprox. 241,445 habitantesApprox. 241,445 people
Reno bills itself as "the Biggest Little City in the World," the hub of northern Nevada, in the high desert at the foot of the Sierra Nevada beside the Truckee River. It began as a railroad stop and grew on 20th-century casinos and quickie divorces; it still has downtown casinos today but has reinvented itself with tech, art and the outdoors. Its big edge is location: Lake Tahoe is under an hour away, and many people set off from here toward the Burning Man festival in the Black Rock Desert.

¿Cuánto necesitas al mes en Reno? How much do you need per month in Reno?
Reno works if your life is already anchored in the US and you want mountains, skiing and no state income tax with Lake Tahoe forty minutes away. It does not work as a cheap nomad base: prices climbed hard with the Bay Area exodus, you need a car, and American health insurance eats a chunk of the budget before you've bought a coffee. And the honest headline for anyone not American — the US has no digital nomad visa, so this is a three-month tourist stint, not a base.

This is the easy part. Cable rules — Xfinity is the dominant provider — and covers essentially the whole metro with 500 Mbps to 1 Gbps+ down, though upload on cable plans is much weaker (often 10-35 Mbps): check the upload number if you live on video calls or push large files. Fiber exists but is patchy street by street rather than citywide, so ask about the specific address before you sign; don't assume. Reliability is good, outages are short and rare, and there are no scheduled blackouts. Mobile coverage is solid across Reno and Sparks on all three major carriers. It falls apart fast once you drive into the Sierra canyons toward Tahoe — plan for dead zones on the mountain, not in town.
CoworkingCoworking
Small scene, but it's real. Reno Collective is the long-standing one — the actual center of gravity for freelancers and remote workers here, on the downtown-Midtown side, with community events attached. The university runs the Innevation Center downtown, leaning startup and entrepreneurship rather than drop-in nomad. Beyond that it's the usual suburban corporate offices (Regus-type). Budget roughly ≈US$150–250 for a hot desk and ≈US$300–400 for a dedicated one, but confirm current pricing with them directly — US coworking rates have moved a lot and it's not worth arriving with an old number in your head. Honestly, plenty of people here just work from home or from a Midtown café, because the housing has space and the internet holds up.
Midtown is where most newcomers who want to walk somewhere end up: bars, cafés, remodeled old houses, priced higher than the buildings deserve. Old Southwest (between the Truckee River and Plumb Lane) is Reno's pretty neighborhood — 1920s-40s houses, big trees, expensive. The university district, north of downtown around UNR, is cheaper and a lot louder during the semester, full of people tied to the school. Then there's the southern sprawl — South Reno, Damonte Ranch — and Sparks, the city glued onto the east side: newer apartments, lower rent, but you live in your car out there. The downtown casino corridor along Virginia Street is the one area almost nobody picks as a home base.
ComunidadCommunity
Reno is not a nomad hub and doesn't pretend to be — no nomad meetups, no remote-worker scene as such. The social life that exists is local and it's built around three things: the university, the tech and industrial jobs out east (the Tahoe-Reno Industrial Center in Storey County pulls in a lot of engineers), and the mountains. If you ski, ride, climb or run trails, you'll make friends fast — that's the real social currency here. If you don't, expect it to be slow: mid-size American city, people already have their circles. Day-to-day language is English, though Reno and Sparks have a sizable Latino population and Spanish is normal in plenty of shops and services. The closest thing to a professional circuit for meeting people is Reno Collective's events and the startup ecosystem around the university — don't expect a weekly calendar.
First, the visa: the US has no digital nomad visa, period. If you're not American or a resident, this is a 90-day tourist stretch on ESTA, not a base, and working remotely on a tourist entry is legally murky and openly questioned at the border. Second, renting without US credit history is genuinely hard — most landlords want a credit score, proof of income around 3x the rent via pay stubs, and a background check; without that, expect extra deposits or a co-signer. Watch the health insurance line too: marketplace subsidies only apply if you have lawful presence and file US taxes, so if you don't qualify you eat the full premium. After that: wildfire smoke from California is a real, recurring problem in late summer, with weeks where the air is bad and going outside is dumb; winter brings snow and cold and the passes to Tahoe close during storms; the city sits at ≈1,370 m, so the air is very dry and the first weeks can hit you; you need a car, because RTC buses exist but the city is built for driving; and downtown near the casinos has visible homelessness and feels rough at night, though it's more discomfort than actual danger. The upside nobody mentions abroad: Nevada has no state income tax, which matters a lot if you're a US taxpayer and not at all if you're not.
Figures in US dollars and approximate, reviewed in September 2026, for one person. Rents move fast in nomad-heavy cities — use these to compare and budget, not as a quote.
