Rangkasbitung es la capital del regencia de Lebak, en la provincia de Banten, en el extremo oeste de Java. Es sobre todo conocida por dos cosas verificables: es la ciudad ligada a Multatuli y su novela Max Havelaar (denuncia clave del colonialismo holandés), con un museo dedicado a él, y es la puerta de entrada al territorio del pueblo baduy (kanekes), la comunidad indígena que vive apartada de la modernidad en las montañas del sur. Es además la terminal sur de la línea de cercanías KRL que la une con Yakarta.Rangkasbitung is the capital of Lebak Regency, in Banten province, at the western end of Java. It's known for two verifiable things: it's the town tied to Multatuli and his novel Max Havelaar (a landmark indictment of Dutch colonialism), with a museum devoted to him, and it's the gateway to the land of the Baduy (Kanekes) people, the indigenous community that lives apart from modernity in the southern mountains. It's also the southern terminus of the KRL commuter line linking it to Jakarta.
