It's a booming industrial and commercial center rather than a postcard destination, but it holds a strong link to Mahatma Gandhi, who spent part of his childhood here. Like all of Gujarat, it's a dry state (alcohol is prohibited) with a rich vegetarian cuisine. The climate is hot and semi-arid, with a short monsoon.
