Kokand (Qo‘qon) sits in the Fergana Valley, Uzbekistan's most populous and agricultural region, in the east of the country. In the 18th–19th centuries it was the capital of the Khanate of Kokand, one of Central Asia's three great states before the Russian conquest, and that era left its jewel: the Khudayar Khan Palace, with its tiled façade and courtyards. It's a Silk Road town — flat, blazing hot in summer, ringed by cotton fields and orchards.
