Bujará

Aprox. 247,644 habitantesApprox. 247,644 people

Bukhara is one of the great cities of the Silk Road, in west-central Uzbekistan, in Central Asia. Its UNESCO-listed historic center preserves more than a thousand years of Islamic architecture almost intact: madrasas, mosques, minarets and caravanserais of brick and turquoise tile. It was a major hub of trade and of Persian and Islamic scholarship. Today it's a calm, human-scaled city, perfect to explore on foot, with a continental desert climate of scorching summers and cold winters.

¿Cuánto necesitas al mes en Bujará?How much do you need per month in Bujará?

Bukhara is one of the cheapest bases you'll find anywhere: a walkable Silk Road old town and a calm daily life for very little money. It works if you're async, don't need a nomad crowd, and can handle bureaucracy — there are no real coworking spaces here, the foreign presence is mostly passing tourists, and daily life runs in Uzbek, Tajik and Russian. It doesn't work if you need bulletproof video calls all day, want to pay for everything with a foreign card, or hate immigration paperwork — and note that on a tourist entry this is a one-month base, not a one-year one.

Home fiber reaches much of the city and typical plans land somewhere around 20–60 Mbps — fine for work and video calls, but don't expect European-capital speeds. The real bottleneck is the country's international bandwidth, which largely runs through the state operator: local speed tests look better than what you actually feel uploading files or hitting services hosted outside Uzbekistan, and peak hours show it. Mobile 4G (Ucell, Beeline, Uzmobile, Mobiuz) covers the city well and is your best plan B; 5G is concentrated in Tashkent and is patchy to nonexistent here. Watch out in winter: provincial cities have had electricity and gas cuts during cold spells, so if your work can't stop, keep a power bank and mobile data topped up. And several platforms and services have been blocked or throttled in the country at different times, so arrive with a VPN already installed and tested.

CoworkingCoworking

Set your expectations honestly: Bukhara has no coworking scene. The country's remote-work infrastructure sits in Tashkent (around IT Park), not here; IT Park has been opening regional branches, but those are incubators for local tech companies, not nomad-oriented desks — ask once you're on the ground rather than counting on it. In practice you'll work from your apartment, from the courtyard or lobby of an old-town guesthouse (many have decent wifi and won't mind you sitting for hours if you keep ordering), or from a café downtown. Don't prepay a monthly desk sight unseen: come, test two or three spots for a week, then decide. If something calling itself a coworking does exist, rates would be very low by international standards.

There's no "nomad district" here; there's the historic center and the Soviet city, and people navigate by street or mikrorayon number. (1) Old town, around Lyab-i Hauz and Poi Kalon: unbeatable atmosphere, everything on foot, but it's guesthouse-and-tourist territory — more night noise in season, cold damp old houses in winter, and inflated prices the moment they clock you as foreign. (2) The mikrorayons east and north of the center: Soviet blocks and newer buildings, actual furnished apartments, markets and supermarkets nearby; ugly outside, comfortable and cheap inside, and where the real city lives. (3) The Bahouddin Naqshbandi street corridor running east out of the center: well connected, restaurants and services, a decent middle ground between atmosphere and price. (4) Kagan, the town with the main railway station about 12–15 km out: cheaper still, but it strands you — don't base there unless you have a car.

ComunidadCommunity

Expect to be fairly alone as a nomad: Bukhara gets a flood of tourists but almost nobody stays, and there are no regular remote-worker meetups or Spanish-speaking community. Meeting people happens the analog way: guesthouse owners, guides, bazaar traders, university students — and they're genuinely hospitable; being invited to tea or to a family wedding is normal, not exceptional. Language is a real barrier: the street speaks Uzbek and plenty of Tajik (Bukhara is historically Persian-speaking), Russian works as a lingua franca mostly with adults, and English only inside the tourist circuit. Spanish, none. Learn a handful of Russian or Uzbek phrases and the city opens up twice as much.

Three things that can wreck your plan. First, immigration registration: foreigners in Uzbekistan must be registered within the first days of their stay. Hotels and guesthouses do it automatically, but if you rent a private apartment it depends on your landlord filing it (there's an online system for private hosts) and plenty of landlords won't or don't know how — without that paperwork you can hit trouble on the way out. Confirm registration BEFORE paying any long rent, and keep proof for every night. Second, the visa: many nationalities enter visa-free for 30 days (Spain, for one), but Latin American passports vary a lot between visa-free, e-visa and consular visa, and extending from inside the country is awkward — most people leave and re-enter. Check YOUR passport on the official source before booking a flight, and plan for a one-month base, not a one-year one. Third, money: this is a cash-and-local-card country (Uzcard/Humo); your foreign Visa or Mastercard works at hotels and some restaurants, but don't assume you'll pay for daily life with it, and know which ATMs take foreign cards. Add the climate — desert summers past 40 °C, sub-zero winters with power and gas cuts — and som inflation, which ages any local-currency price fast: treat my figures as orders of magnitude, not a locked budget.

Figures in US dollars and approximate, reviewed in September 2026, for one person. Rents move fast in nomad-heavy cities — use these to compare and budget, not as a quote.
