Andiján
Aprox. 318,419 habitantesApprox. 318,419 people
Andijan is one of the major cities of the Fergana Valley, in the far east of Uzbekistan, next to the border with Kyrgyzstan. The valley is Central Asia's most fertile and populous region, a land of irrigation, cotton, silk, and orchards. Andijan is best known as the birthplace of Babur, the 15th-century Timurid prince who would go on to found the Mughal Empire in India and left memoirs describing his home city. It's a place of trade and bazaar, more about daily life than grand monuments.
Mejor épocaBest time

¿Cuánto necesitas al mes en Andiján?How much do you need per month in Andiján?
Andijan is one of the cheapest bases you'll find in Asia: ≈US$400 a month is a comfortable enough life and ≈US$750 is genuinely comfortable by local standards, surrounded by the best food in the Fergana Valley. It works if stretching money is your priority, you can handle isolation, and you set your own hours. It doesn't work if you need a nomad community, English in daily life, or reliable infrastructure — there's no remote scene here, almost nobody speaks English, and winter gas and power cuts are just part of life.

Fiber exists in the center and it's dirt cheap: realistically 20–70 Mbps for ≈US$10–20 a month, fine for video calls unless you're uploading heavy files all day. Advertised speeds and delivered speeds don't always match, and in older buildings or on the edge of town you may get ADSL sold to you as "fast internet" — ask for a speed test before you sign. Local carriers' 4G (Ucell, Beeline, Mobiuz, Uzmobile) covers the city well and costs almost nothing, but the Fergana Valley is congested and speeds drop at peak hours. Two concrete things: Uzbekistan has intermittently blocked or throttled social networks and services, so have a VPN installed and tested before you arrive; and in winter power cuts take the router down with them — a power bank and backup mobile data aren't paranoia, they're the actual plan B.
CoworkingCoworking
Commercial coworking scene: essentially none, and we're not going to invent names for you. The one reference worth chasing is IT Park, the state tech program that opened regional branches and has a presence in the Andijan region — that's where the city's handful of developers and freelancers are, and access tends to be cheap, though terms for foreigners shift: confirm it on arrival rather than counting on it. Beyond that, reality is working from home or from cafés in the center, with the warning that most aren't built for laptops — noise, few outlets, wifi that drops. If you work remotely for real, spend on good fiber in the apartment and treat cafés as an occasional break.
Let's be honest: there's no "expat neighborhood" in Andijan, there's the center and there's everything else. The center, around the Bobur memorial park (the Mughal emperor was born here) and the pedestrian streets nearby, is where you want to be: buildings with fiber, cafés, pharmacies, everything walkable. The central bazaar area and the old town are cheaper, louder and far more local — incredible food, zero infrastructure built with you in mind. Around Andijan State University and the State Medical Institute you get cheap rentals and the only young, semi-international atmosphere in town. Then there are the Soviet block microdistricts: low rent, questionable heating, far from everything. For a short or medium stay, the center, no hesitation.
ComunidadCommunity
There is no nomad community here. No remote-worker meetups, no active groups worth joining, no Spanish speakers — if that's what you need, this isn't your city. The only cluster of outsiders is the international students at the medical institute, many from South Asia, who do form a small English-speaking circle. Daily life runs in Uzbek; Russian helps less than in Tashkent because the Fergana Valley is far more Uzbek-speaking, and English barely exists outside the university. That said, the hospitality is real and out of all proportion: if a family invites you to a dastarkhan, say yes. Learning 50 words of Uzbek transforms your experience; arriving with nothing and expecting the city to adapt to you is how you leave in three weeks.
What a friend would tell you: first, registration. Uzbekistan requires you to register your stay within a few days of arrival — hotels do it automatically, but if you rent an apartment the landlord has to register you (it can be done online now) and plenty of owners don't want the paperwork. Sort this out BEFORE you pay the first month; leaving the country with gaps in your registrations can mean a fine. Second, winter: gas and electricity shortages in the regions are a documented, recurring problem, with freezing apartments in January — ask how the building heats and keep an electric heater and thermals. Third, climate: dry summers that clear 35 °C easily, and winters where the city air gets noticeably dirty from heating. Fourth, money: the economy runs on local cards (Uzcard/Humo) and cash; your foreign Visa/Mastercard works unevenly outside Tashkent, so arrive with clean US dollar bills and change them at a bank. The som has depreciated steadily and inflation runs high — think twice before locking long contracts in dollars, and re-check every price here on arrival. Fifth, getting out: the fast train to Tashkent through the Angren–Pap tunnel takes about 4 hours and is the reliable option; by road it's 5–6 hours over the Kamchik Pass, which gets ugly with snow or fog and sometimes closes. And sixth: the valley is conservative and local politics is a sensitive subject (2005 still weighs). Listen more than you opine.
Figures in US dollars and approximate, reviewed in September 2026, for one person. Rents move fast in nomad-heavy cities — use these to compare and budget, not as a quote.
