Portland
Aprox. 632,309 habitantesApprox. 632,309 people
Portland is organized around the Willamette and Columbia rivers, with leafy districts, cycling culture and an identity shaped by independent food, beer and nearby nature. For orientation, Pearl District —a former warehouse district converted into housing, galleries, parks and shops north of downtown— and Hawthorne —a southeast corridor of independent shops, cafés, cinemas and early twentieth-century houses— are two concrete areas. Verifiable anchors include Washington Park and Powell’s City of Books.

Un coche ayuda para Columbia Gorge, no para el centro.MAX light rail, streetcar and buses cover the central area; cycling works on many corridors. A car helps for the Columbia Gorge, not downtown.

¿Cuánto necesitas al mes en Portland? How much do you need per month in Portland?
Portland works if you earn in dollars and what you want is a walkable, bike-friendly US city with forest and mountains under an hour away, seriously good food, and zero sales tax. It doesn't work if you came to stretch your money: figure two to three times what you'd spend in Mexico City or Medellín, and there's basically no international nomad scene — you live among locals, in English. And be honest with yourself about the weather: roughly eight months of grey drizzle. If that sinks your mood, this isn't your base.

US$60-85/month for 1 Gbps), but not every address: in a lot of buildings — especially older ones in inner Southeast — cable is the only real option, meaning fast download and weak upload, which is exactly what hurts if you live on video calls or push big files. Internet here is sold per address and you often can't pick your provider, so ask about UPLOAD speed before you sign. 5G covers the city without drama. The real risk isn't speed, it's power: winter ice storms have left neighborhoods without electricity for days (it happened in January 2024), so keep mobile data and a battery as your plan B.
CoworkingCoworking
There's a real scene — the area is nicknamed Silicon Forest, though most of the big tech employers sit in the western suburbs (Hillsboro, Beaverton) rather than in the city itself — but it's priced like the US: hot desk ≈US$250/month, dedicated desk ≈US$400, private office considerably more. You'll find national chains and local operators; CENTRL Office is one of the better-known local ones. Important caveat: the coworking market shifted enormously after 2020 and plenty of spaces closed or changed hands, so call ahead and confirm a place is still open before you show up. The cheap alternative is cafés, which are plentiful and genuinely good here — but note that several ban laptops on weekends or cap wifi at a couple of hours, and they will politely ask. County public libraries have free tables and wifi and are a legitimate option.
Inner Southeast (Hawthorne, Division, Buckman, Ladd's Addition) is where most people land: flat and bikeable, cafés and restaurants on every block, and the best price-to-vibe ratio. Northeast (Alberta Arts, Concordia, Irvington) is more residential — porch houses, great food, a bit quieter — good if you're staying months rather than weeks. Pearl District and Northwest/Nob Hill are the modern-building, elevator-and-gym options where you walk everywhere, but you pay more and you're right next to downtown, which is the city's weak spot. If you want to spend less and don't mind relying on bus or bike, look at St. Johns or Montavilla: more local, less storefront.
ComunidadCommunity
It's a friendly city but a slow one for making friends: people are warm on first contact, and real friendships still take months to form. There's no international nomad community to plug into — this isn't Medellín or Lisbon — so the way in is through hobbies: running and cycling clubs, climbing gyms, bar trivia, breweries, tech meetups. Everything runs in English; if you're not comfortable in it, daily life will be an uphill climb. Oregon has a strong Latino community, but it's concentrated more in Hillsboro, Gresham and Woodburn (and along the NE 82nd corridor) than in inner east-side Portland.
First and most serious: the US has no digital nomad visa. On ESTA you get 90 days with no extension; if your country needs a B1/B2 visa, admission is usually up to 6 months — but neither gives you work authorization, and working remotely for a foreign client sits in a grey zone each border officer reads their own way. Don't plan a long base here without real immigration advice. Second: do not come without health insurance; one uninsured ER visit wrecks any budget. Third, money leaks in places you don't see: an 18-22% tip is effectively mandatory at restaurants, though Oregon charging no sales tax offsets it a little (the shelf price is the final price). On safety: downtown and Old Town have visible open drug use and homelessness, especially at night — Oregon rolled back drug decriminalization in 2024 and things improved somewhat from the worst stretch, but it's still visible; the rest of the city is calm, though car break-ins are a local sport, so leave NOTHING visible in a vehicle. On weather: October to May is grey and constantly drizzly, some years wildfire smoke rolls in around August-September and the air gets genuinely bad, and summer heat waves hit hard in apartments that often have no A/C (2021's was historic). And on renting: most landlords want US credit history and a one-year lease; furnished month-to-month exists, but you'll pay a steep premium for it.
Figures in US dollars and approximate, reviewed in September 2026, for one person. Rents move fast in nomad-heavy cities — use these to compare and budget, not as a quote.
