Pokhara

Aprox. 200,000 habitantesApprox. 200,000 people

Pokhara is the gateway to the Annapurna massif and, for many, Nepal's most laid-back city. It spreads along Phewa Lake at about 800 m, with the snow range looming behind: on a clear day you see Machhapuchhre (the 'Fishtail') mirrored in the water. The Lakeside (Baidam) area holds the hotels, cafés and trekking agencies, and is the base for legendary routes like Annapurna Base Camp and the Annapurna Circuit. It's also Nepal's paragliding capital, thanks to the thermals over the valley. It's one of those places you drop into for a few days and stay for weeks.

Mejor épocaBest time

Pokhara is among Nepal's rainiest places, so avoid the monsoon (June-September).

PresupuestoBudget

Nepal is very cheap: guesthouses, food (the endlessly refilled dal bhat) and trekking permits cost little. Easy to travel long on a tight budget.

EntradaEntry

Nepal offers visa on arrival for most nationalities, obtainable at Kathmandu airport or at land borders.

Around Lakeside you walk or cycle; taxis for the rest. From Kathmandu you arrive by tourist bus (6-7 h) or a short flight. Almost every Annapurna trek is arranged here.

¿Cuánto necesitas al mes en Pokhara? How much do you need per month in Pokhara?

Pokhara is one of the cheapest bases in the world with real mountains at the door: Phewa Lake, the Annapurnas, US$2 dal bhat and rent in the low hundreds. It works if you're a slow-travel nomad happy hiking or paragliding on weekends and your work survives internet that's decent but not first-world. It doesn't work if you upload heavy video daily, if you want a big stable coworking scene, or if you mind being pushed out of the country: Nepal has no digital nomad visa and tourist stays are capped per year.

Better than people expect from Nepal, worse than you'd want from a nomad base. Lakeside has fiber — WorldLink is the most widespread provider, with other national ISPs also operating — and home plans realistically deliver tens of megabits: plenty for video calls and normal work, tight if you upload heavy files daily. Advertised speed is rarely what you get at peak hours, and international routes get congested. The weak point is less bandwidth than continuity: the old daily scheduled load-shedding is no longer the norm, but unannounced power and service cuts still happen, especially during monsoon storms, and not every building has an inverter or generator. Mobile is 4G (5G has barely arrived in the country) and works well inside town, but drops off fast once you head uphill. Run a speed test and ask which provider serves the building BEFORE committing to a flat or paying a month at a guesthouse, keep mobile data as backup for the call you can't miss, and bring a VPN: Nepal has blocked entire platforms before (TikTok was banned from 2023 to 2024, and September 2025 brought a sweeping social media block) — check where things stand when you go.

CoworkingCoworking

Small scene with heavy turnover: spaces in Lakeside have opened and closed, so don't assume the one you saw in a blog post is still running — check before you fly. Where they exist, monthly passes run roughly US$60–100 and day passes around US$5, but the lineup changes year to year and it's not worth planning your move around one specific space. In practice most people work out of Lakeside cafés, which are used to laptops, have wifi and won't rush you out; several hotels and guesthouses also rent a desk or have a usable common area. If your work needs a formal space with an ergonomic chair, a call booth and guaranteed power, Pokhara will fall short — Kathmandu has more options and steadier ones.

Lakeside (Baidam) is the nomad core: the strip along Phewa Lake with cafés, restaurants, trekking agencies and nearly all the furnished rentals. The central stretch is the loudest (live-music bars running late). North Lakeside — Khahare and Sedi: same lake, far quieter, more of a neighborhood feel, and where people staying months rather than days tend to land; you'll want a scooter or bike to get in and out. Damside (Pardi), at the southern end near the dam, is calmer and a bit cheaper, with more local life and less backpacker energy. Bagar and Mahendrapul are the actual town, away from the lake: much cheaper rents, real markets, no foreigner scene and a lot more traffic noise — the pick if you're staying many months and want local prices.

ComunidadCommunity

Meeting people is dead easy; getting them to stay is the hard part. Lakeside is a rolling parade of trekkers, paragliders, yoga folks and travelers passing through, so you'll talk to twenty people in a week and almost all of them are gone within a month. The nomads who actually live there are a small crowd — dozens, not hundreds — and they cycle through the same five cafés. Things happen through local Facebook and WhatsApp groups more than formal meetups; paragliding and yoga are the two circles that pull you in fastest. Spanish: essentially none, there's no Hispanic community. Daily life runs in English, which works fine in Lakeside (you'll want some Nepali at the market and outside the tourist strip, though four phrases buy you a lot of goodwill). If you need a dense, stable network, Kathmandu or Chiang Mai will give you more.

The visa is the sticking point. Nepal has no digital nomad visa. You come in on a tourist visa (available on arrival, in 15, 30 or 90-day chunks, extendable) and there's a cap on tourist days per calendar year — 150 as things stand — so you can't just stay indefinitely: you will have to leave the country. Check the current cap and rules with Nepal Immigration before booking flights; this changes and old blog posts lie. Monsoon runs June to September: serious rain, heavy humidity, the mountains vanish behind cloud, and landslides close roads. March–April is smoke season: forest fires and thermal inversion put up a haze that erases the Annapurna views and hits hard if you're asthmatic. Winter isn't brutally cold, but there's no heating: buildings have no insulation and at 800 m the nights feel far worse indoors than out — ask about a duvet and a heater before you rent. Dengue: Pokhara has had serious outbreaks in recent years, mostly post-monsoon — repellent and a mosquito net aren't paranoia. It's a cash economy: ATMs charge a steep flat fee per withdrawal with a low limit, so you withdraw often and pay every time; plenty of places don't take cards or add a percentage. Rental agreements are informal, verbal and in cash, with a foreigner price and a local price — negotiate, and see the place in person before handing over months up front. Healthcare is limited: anything serious means Kathmandu or Bangkok, and Nepal is both seismically active and high-altitude trekking country — buy insurance that genuinely covers helicopter evacuation, and be aware of the well-documented scam of unnecessary evacuations billed to insurers. Politics and bandhs: strikes and road blockades appear without warning, and the September 2025 protests showed how fast the country can grind to a halt — leave slack in your dates.

Figures in US dollars and approximate, reviewed in September 2026, for one person. Rents move fast in nomad-heavy cities — use these to compare and budget, not as a quote.
