It's a treasury of Newar architecture and the valley's craft heart: its neighborhoods hold Nepal's finest metalworkers, goldsmiths and wood carvers. Its Durbar Square is, for many, the most harmonious of the valley's three, with the stone Krishna Mandir temple and dozens of pagodas. Patan is at once a living city and an open-air museum, calmer and less touristy than Kathmandu despite adjoining it.
