Katmandú

Aprox. 1,442,271 habitantesApprox. 1,442,271 people

Kathmandu is Nepal's capital, set in a valley at around 1,400 m ringed by Himalayan foothills. It's a dense, chaotic, deeply religious city: Hindu temples and Buddhist stupas share every corner, and the air smells of incense, dust and spice. It's the classic launch point for nearly every Nepal trek (Annapurna, Everest), and the Thamel district is the buzzing hub of backpackers, agencies and gear shops. It's worth it for living heritage, not for comfort.

Mejor épocaBest time

October–November (post-monsoon) and March–April are ideal: clear skies, good mountain views and mild weather. The monsoon (June–September) brings rain and haze; winter is cold but dry.

PresupuestoBudget

Nepal is very cheap: budget dorms and guesthouses, local food (dal bhat, momos) for little. A backpacker lives comfortably on a low budget; treks raise costs via permits and guides.

EntradaEntry

Nepal grants visa on arrival at Kathmandu airport for almost all nationalities, for 15, 30 or 90 days. Bring a photo and US dollars in cash.

On foot around the old town and Thamel; taxis (haggle or ask for the meter) and apps like Pathao/InDrive for longer trips. Traffic and pollution are heavy; a mask helps.

Costo de vida nómadaNomad cost of living

¿Cuánto necesitas al mes en Katmandú?How much do you need per month in Katmandú?

US$700-900 you live comfortably, with real mountains an hour or two away. It works if you're here for trekking, the Himalaya and a cheap, slow life, and if your job tolerates decent-but-not-flawless internet. It doesn't work if you need perfect video calls all day, clean air, or a big nomad scene: dry-season pollution in the valley is genuinely bad, the city itself is dusty and chaotic, and the remote-work community is tiny next to Bangkok or Chiang Mai.

Better than people expect, but don't oversell it. Home fiber (WorldLink, Vianet, Subisu and Classic Tech are the names you'll hear) costs ≈US$12-25/month and is normally fine for video calls, though advertised speeds and what you actually get to servers abroad are two different things: Nepal's international bandwidth routes through India, so evenings are the slow, congested stretch. The weak point is stability, not headline speed — micro-drops happen, and while the old scheduled blackouts (\"load shedding\") are largely gone from the city, one-off power cuts aren't, and monsoon landslides occasionally take lines down. If your income depends on being online, you want a building with an inverter/battery and a mobile data plan as backup. Mobile coverage (Ncell, Nepal Telecom) is solid across the valley and drops off fast once you head into the mountains. Worth knowing: the government has blocked social platforms before, so keep a VPN installed.

CoworkingCoworking

Small but real, clustered around Jhamsikhel/Kupondole in Patan and the Lazimpat-Thamel side. Expect a handful of decent spaces rather than a big selection, and check each one in person — the scene changes and places open and close. Hot desks run roughly ≈US$50-100/month, sometimes with meeting rooms and a backup generator or inverter, which here is a genuinely useful luxury rather than a nice-to-have. Plenty of people just work from cafés — the valley is full of spots with solid wifi and outlets, especially in Patan and Boudha — so you can test the city for a month without committing to a desk.

Thamel is the tourist-and-trekking district: handy for sorting everything out fast, but noisy, touristy and not ideal for living for months. Lazimpat is the quiet, embassy-adjacent option north of the centre, with decent apartments and good cafés. Across the river, Jhamsikhel ("Jhamel"), Sanepa and Kupondole in Patan/Lalitpur are where most long-staying foreigners settle: greener, calmer, restaurants, cafés and coworking, with Patan's old town next door. Boudha, around the great stupa, draws people here for Buddhism, yoga or long retreats and runs at a slower pace, though it's further from everything else.

ComunidadCommunity

Meeting people is easy, but the crowd skews trekkers, volunteers, NGO and development workers rather than pure digital nomads — and it turns over hard with the trekking seasons. English is widely spoken in the city and across tourism, so you get by without Nepali from day one. The Spanish-speaking community is very small; if you want Spanish, it'll be online more than in person. The real meeting points are cafés, yoga schools, the handful of coworking spaces and trekking groups; organised meetups exist but are irregular.

The air. From winter into spring (roughly November to April, with March-April often the worst because of wildfires) pollution gets trapped in the valley between the mountains and Kathmandu regularly ranks among the worst-air cities in the world. If you're asthmatic or have sensitive lungs that's not a detail, it's a reason to skip that season — and buy a decent mask and an air purifier if you stay. June-September is monsoon: cleaner air, but daily rain, humidity, mud-soaked streets and hidden mountains; trekking stops. The sweet spot is October-November. Visas: Nepal has no digital nomad visa, so you'd be on a tourist visa (issued on arrival, extendable) with a cap of around 150 days per calendar year — confirm the current limit and fees with Immigration before planning a long stay, because the rules do change. Also real: earthquake risk (2015 wasn't that long ago), water scarcity — many buildings run on delivered tanker water, ask before signing — rent normally paid several months upfront in cash, and intense traffic, dust and noise. And check the news before you commit: the country went through a serious political crisis in 2025, with big protests in Kathmandu triggered by a social-media block, and it's been in a transition since.

Figures in US dollars and approximate, reviewed in September 2026, for one person. Rents move fast in nomad-heavy cities — use these to compare and budget, not as a quote.
