Filadelfia

Aprox. 1,567,442 habitantesApprox. 1,567,442 people

Philadelphia is Pennsylvania's largest city and one of America's most historic: the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution were both signed here. It sits between New York and Washington on the Delaware River, the classic red-brick city, with a walkable grid center laid out by William Penn. It has lively neighborhoods, markets, murals all over town and a strong street identity (cheesesteaks, the Eagles, the Rocky steps). Big and real, with prices more human than New York's.

¿Cuánto necesitas al mes en Filadelfia? How much do you need per month in Filadelfia?

Philadelphia is one of the cheapest big cities on the US Northeast corridor: real urban density, direct trains to New York and DC, and plenty of bandwidth, for a lot less than New York or Boston. It works if you earn in dollars and want a US base without Manhattan prices, or if you're here in short stretches between trips. It doesn't work if "cheap" means Latin American cheap, or if you want an organized nomad scene — almost everyone here is a local with a local job, and US immigration paperwork is the hardest part of the package.

Internet is not a problem here. Philadelphia is Comcast's hometown, so fast cable covers most of the city: cheap, quick downloads (≈US$50–75/month for 300–500 Mbps), but watch the upload — on cable it usually sits in the tens of Mbps, and upload is exactly what matters for video calls and heavy files. Where Verizon Fios fiber reaches, you get symmetric upload, which is what you want; the catch is that fiber coverage in Philadelphia is uneven, closer to block by block than citywide. Mobile 4G/5G is solid above ground; inside the subway it drops in stretches. No systematic blackouts: what happens is summer storms and the occasional snowstorm knocking out power for a few hours in specific pockets. Practical tip: before signing a lease, ask which providers reach THAT exact address and what UPLOAD speed you get, not just download.

CoworkingCoworking

There is a scene, but it's local founders and freelancers more than passing nomads. The space with the most history is Indy Hall, one of the oldest independent coworking spaces in the US and the most community-driven one in town: people who actually know each other, events, clubhouse vibe; it has moved more than once, so confirm the current address before you show up. There are also corporate chains and boutique spaces in Center City (they open and close often — check they're still operating) and options tied to the university and biotech ecosystem in University City. A monthly hot desk runs ≈US$200–350; a private office costs a lot more. On a tight budget, the real alternative is working from cafés — the city has tons, and a specialty coffee is around ≈US$5 — plus the free public libraries, which are quiet and have wifi. Most spaces offer a day pass: use it before you pay for a month.

Center City (Rittenhouse Square, Washington Square West) is the priciest and the most convenient: you walk everywhere, restaurants and gyms around the corner, and most coworking spaces are here. Fishtown and Northern Liberties are the young north: specialty coffee, bars, live music, a 25-to-40 crowd; prices jumped over the last decade but still sit below Center City. South Philly, especially around East Passyunk and the Italian Market, is the best value: two-story rowhouses, some of the city's best food, strong Mexican and Vietnamese communities, and rents still below the core. University City and West Philly (Cedar Park, Baltimore Ave) is Penn and Drexel student-and-academic territory: big houses to share, lots of summer sublets and softer prices — with the caveat that the vibe and the state of the houses change from one block to the next.

ComunidadCommunity

Daily life happens in English, plain and simple — Spanish alone won't carry you here the way it does in Miami. That said, the Hispanic community is large and long-established: Puerto Rican and Dominican in the north of the city (the 5th Street corridor, known as "El Bloque de Oro") and Mexican in South Philly around the Italian Market, with taquerias, bakeries and Spanish-language mass. Meeting people is easy if you put yourself out there: the city has one of the densest student populations in the country (Penn, Drexel, Temple), and with that come tech meetups, adult sports leagues, run clubs and coworking events nearly every week. What you will NOT find is the Medellín or Lisbon nomad bubble — there's no big pool of passing foreigners, so your circle will be people who actually live here. Better long-term, slower at the start.

Immigration is the serious part: the US has no digital nomad visa, period. ESTA gets you up to 90 days and on a B1/B2 tourist visa the officer sets the length; tourist status does NOT authorize work, and invoicing foreign clients while on a tourist entry is a gray zone the officer reads however they like — and they decide at the border. ESTA and visa fees have gone up in recent years: check the current cost instead of trusting old numbers. Don't plan to "live" here without real immigration advice. Second, health insurance: uninsured, one night in the ER runs into the thousands, so don't enter without travel insurance with high medical coverage. Third, renting: the standard lease is 12 months and requires US credit history plus provable income of 2.5–3x the rent; without that, your real options are monthly Airbnb or a shared room, both at a premium. In Pennsylvania the security deposit can't exceed two months' rent in the first year. Fourth, safety changes block by block, not neighborhood by neighborhood: homicides have dropped sharply from the 2021 peak, but local variation is real and there are areas — Kensington being the obvious one, with its open-air drug market — where you simply don't apartment-hunt. Walk the block by day and by night before signing. Fifth, transit: SEPTA has been through budget crises with threatened service cuts and fare increases, so check current routes and prices before counting on the subway for everything. And the weather: July and August are humid and heavy, and the gray winter drags from January through March. One last money detail: add ~8% tax and a 20% tip to every restaurant price, and if you work for yourself from the city, ask an accountant about Philadelphia's local taxes on self-employment income — it's a cost almost nobody sees coming.

Figures in US dollars and approximate, reviewed in September 2026, for one person. Rents move fast in nomad-heavy cities — use these to compare and budget, not as a quote.
