Pekanbaru

Aprox. 703,956 habitantesApprox. 703,956 people

Pekanbaru is the capital of Riau province, on the island of Sumatra, Indonesia, sitting almost exactly on the equator. It rises on the banks of the Siak River, a historic artery that once linked it to the Strait of Malacca, and today it's a city of oil and palm oil rather than tourism: much of Riau's economy revolves around those two resources. The climate is equatorial — hot and humid year-round, with frequent rain — and the city works as a gateway and logistics hub for the interior of central Sumatra.

Mejor épocaBest time

Near the equator it's hot and humid all year; June to September tend to be somewhat drier. Watch for the haze season from peatland fires, which can affect the air.

¿Cuánto necesitas al mes en Pekanbaru? How much do you need per month in Pekanbaru?

Pekanbaru is a working city, not a postcard: capital of Riau, it runs on oil, palm and pulp, and it works if you want genuinely cheap Indonesia, spectacular Minang and Riau food for two dollars, and an airport ten minutes from downtown. It doesn't work if you're after a nomad scene, because there isn't one: nobody comes here to work remotely, coworking is token at best, and without some Bahasa Indonesia daily life gets hard. And there's one factor you can't ignore: Riau is ground zero for peatland fires, so in bad years the city spends weeks under smoke.

Home fiber is usually IndiHome (Telkom), with typical plans of 30 to 100 Mbps; there's an alternative provider or two depending on the area, so ask what actually reaches your street before signing, because coverage isn't even across neighborhoods. Download usually delivers, upload is noticeably weaker: if your job is pushing heavy files or streaming live, test before you commit. On mobile, Telkomsel has the most reliable coverage in Riau and 4G is more than enough for video calls; 5G is marginal, don't count on it. Expect occasional PLN power cuts, more frequent during heavy storms, and always keep mobile data as a backup before an important call. Two warnings: café wifi is very uneven (mall wifi tends to be the steadiest), and Indonesia filters sites at the ISP level — Reddit and Vimeo have been blocked for years, along with gambling and adult content — so arrive with a VPN already installed.

CoworkingCoworking

There's essentially no scene. One or two spaces exist, tied to local startups, the university or provincial entrepreneurship programs, but they open and close easily and are built for students and local businesses, not passing foreigners: don't count on finding one running until you confirm it on the spot. If one is open, a monthly desk runs about ≈US$50-80, though the range varies a lot and many charge by the day. In practice everyone works from cafés: kedai kopi culture is very strong here, and the modern cafés along Sudirman and inside the malls (SKA, Ciputra Seraya, Living World) have AC, outlets and decent wifi. The catch is the noise, and that "laptop friendly" etiquette doesn't exist: at peak hours they expect you to free up the table.

The Jalan Jenderal Sudirman corridor is the real center: offices, hotels, banks, the An-Nur Grand Mosque and the cafés where you'll end up working; it's the most practical base if you'd rather not depend entirely on a scooter. Sukajadi and the Jalan Riau area is central and packed with food and shops, good value for the location. Tampan and Panam, around Universitas Riau, is where people who want to spend little live: kos everywhere, cheap food and a young crowd, though you're far from the center. And Rumbai, north across the Siak River, is the neighborhood historically tied to the oil companies: big houses, orderly tree-lined streets, lots of corporate families; that's where you'll find the most outsiders, but it's quiet to the point of dull and doesn't work without your own vehicle. Marpoyan Damai sits conveniently between downtown and the airport.

ComunidadCommunity

There's no nomad community, and it's not worth looking for one. The foreigners living here are mostly oil, palm and pulp people — many in Rumbai or company compounds — plus the odd English teacher and NGO staff; they organize through WhatsApp and Facebook groups and company social life, not open meetups. Spanish-speaking community: zero, assume it. Daily life runs in Bahasa Indonesia, with plenty of Riau Malay and Minang underneath; English gets you through malls, hotels and university students, but not the warung or the Gojek driver. The upside: Bahasa is one of the easiest languages to start, and people here are hospitable and curious — seeing a foreigner is still unusual — so with a handful of phrases you get invited to eat fast. The downside: skip that effort and you'll isolate yourself.

First and most serious: the smoke. Riau is the province where peatlands burn most from land clearing, and in bad years (2015 and 2019 were brutal) Pekanbaru spends weeks with air quality in the hazardous range, schools closed, flights cancelled and everyone in masks. The risk window runs roughly February-March and June to September, and the intensity swings enormously year to year depending on El Niño and burning policy: there have been nearly clean years and unlivable ones. If you have asthma or any respiratory issue, think twice, and either way bring an air purifier or buy one when you land. Second, the climate: equatorial heat all year, highs of 32-33°C with high humidity, no cool season, and very heavy rain peaking around October-December and March-April, with localized street and low-lying flooding. Third, getting around: there are city buses (Trans Metro Pekanbaru), but with limited routes and irregular frequencies, there are almost no sidewalks and scooter traffic is dense, so in practice you depend on Gojek, Grab or Maxim, or your own bike; if you've never ridden one, this is not the city to learn. Fourth, rentals: many landlords want several months or the full year upfront, in cash, and kos usually come with rules — split by sex, curfews, no opposite-sex visitors; ask before you pay. Fifth, context: Riau is a Malay Muslim province and fairly conservative day to day; alcohol is expensive and hard to find outside a few hotels, and during Ramadan many warungs close during daylight. On visas: most people enter on a 30-day visa on arrival, extendable once; to stay legally while working remotely there's the remote-worker permit (KITAS E33G), which requires proving a high annual income — in the tens of thousands of dollars a year; check the current requirements at the official immigration source before you plan, because they change often. Honest bonus: the airport (SSK II) sits right next to the city and there are short hops to Malaysia, though international routes come and go — confirm what's actually operating before you rely on them; that's the way out plenty of people take for anything medically serious.

Figures in US dollars and approximate, reviewed in September 2026, for one person.
