Patna spreads along the south bank of the Ganges in Bihar, eastern India. It's one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities on earth: this was Pataliputra, capital of the Maurya and Gupta empires over two thousand years ago. Today it's a loud, hot, barely-touristed state capital with huge historical weight and several sites sacred to Sikhs and Buddhists. It isn't postcard-pretty, but it's dense, real and cheap.
Mejor épocaBest time
November to February. Summers (April-June) are brutally hot and the monsoon (July-September) brings heavy rain and Ganges flooding. Winter is dry and mild, the only comfortable window.

Local food and simple hotels cost little; Bihar is one of India's poorest states, so tourist pricing barely exists.

India requires a visa for almost all nationalities; the tourist e-Visa is arranged online before you travel.
Auto-rickshaws (tuk-tuks), taxis and ride apps. The city is long and flat along the river; haggle or use an app for a fair fare.

¿Cuánto necesitas al mes en Patna? How much do you need per month in Patna?
Patna is one of the cheapest places on earth to live with your own apartment: ≈US$750 a month buys a comfortable life in the city's best area, and home fiber is surprisingly good for video calls. It works if you're a solo worker with your life already sorted who wants to save seriously, or if you have a concrete reason to be there (family, a job, IIT/AIIMS Patna). It works badly for nearly everyone else: no nomad or expat community, daily life runs in Hindi/Bhojpuri, winter air quality is among the worst on the planet, summer runs past 40 °C, and alcohol is banned by law across Bihar. This isn't a base you try out — it's a city you go to for a reason.

Better than you'd expect. Fiber landed hard in Patna: Jio, Airtel, BSNL and several local ISPs offer unlimited 100 Mbps for ≈US$8–11 a month (300 Mbps plans run closer to ≈US$15–18), with enough upload for calls all day — though most give you the good price only if you prepay quarterly or half-yearly. Mobile coverage is solid: 4G everywhere and Jio/Airtel 5G across much of the urban area, so a backup data plan costs almost nothing. Three weak points: the cabling runs overhead on poles, so after a big storm or deep in monsoon you can lose your line for a whole day; power supply improved enormously over the last decade and is now near-continuous, but summer cuts still happen (which is why everyone here owns a battery inverter — get one, or live in a building with a generator); and the one nobody warns you about: in India authorities suspend mobile internet by administrative order during unrest or leaked-exam scandals, and Bihar has had several such district-level shutdowns. Fiber usually survives them, mobile data doesn't. If your work depends on being online, keep both.
CoworkingCoworking
There's no coworking scene here in the nomad sense. A few small spaces have opened around Bihar's startup ecosystem and the Boring Road / Bailey Road office areas, but they open and close and I can't give you names I'd stand behind today — look them up on Google Maps when you arrive and visit in person before paying. Where one exists, a monthly hot desk runs ≈US$35–70. The reality is almost everyone works from home, and that's the sensible play: rent is so cheap you just take an extra room and build your office there. Work-friendly cafés with outlets and decent wifi are scarce; mall and hotel cafés are fine for a couple of hours, not a full day.
Outsiders here — almost always Indians from other states, not foreigners — cluster in four areas. Boring Road / Sri Krishna Puri is the most central and livable: restaurants, shops, everything walkable. Patliputra Colony is the moneyed residential pocket, quiet and leafy, with the best-built houses and flats. Bailey Road and Rajiv Nagar is the newer corridor heading west, with modern buildings and slightly better prices. Kankarbagh is the big middle-class neighborhood to the southeast — much cheaper, much denser, popular with students and people cramming for government exams. Watch the geography if a campus is what brings you: IIT Patna is in Bihta, about 35 km west, and AIIMS is in Phulwari Sharif to the southwest — neither is downtown. And the old riverside areas (Ashok Rajpath, Patna City) are fascinating to walk, but dense, loud, and not where you want to live for a year.
ComunidadCommunity
There's no nomad or expat community here, and you should accept that before booking: no remote-work meetups, no expat groups, nobody speaking Spanish. The foreigners you spot are usually passing through toward Bodh Gaya or Nalanda. Meeting people runs through local circuits: the university world (AIIMS, NIT, Patna University), the startup and young-civil-servant crowd around Boring Road, and above all the fact that people in Bihar are genuinely hospitable — an invitation to someone's home comes fast if you're open. Daily life happens in Hindi, with Bhojpuri and Magahi underneath; English gets you through hospitals, offices, hotels and conversations with students, but not with the auto-rickshaw driver, your landlord, or the market. Without some Hindi you'll be fairly isolated. And if you land in October or November, Chhath Puja will show you the whole city pouring onto the Ganges ghats — it's Bihar's biggest festival and the best social door you'll get.
Four things a friend would tell you before you book. One: alcohol has been banned by law in Bihar since April 2016, and the ban is total — no bars, no legal sales, and possession and consumption are penalized, outsiders included. If that changes the plan, better to know now. Two: the air. From November to January Patna shows up year after year among the most polluted cities in the world; if you have asthma or anything respiratory, those months are genuinely rough and a home purifier stops being a luxury. Three: the climate splits the year into two different hells — April to June runs past 40 °C with heatwaves, and June to September the monsoon brings flooding and waterlogged streets; Patna sits right on the Ganges and in 2019 half the city was under water for days. October to March (smoke aside) is the good window. Four: paperwork. India has no digital nomad visa and a tourist e-visa doesn't allow you to work; on longer visas FRRO registration comes into play, and in a city with almost no foreigners that process gets more scrutiny than it would in Goa. Rental contracts are 11 months with a 1–3 month deposit, often with no formal paperwork and nothing protecting you, and plenty of landlords simply won't rent to a single foreigner — expect to knock on a lot more doors than usual.
Figures in US dollars and approximate, reviewed in September 2026, for one person. Rents move fast in nomad-heavy cities — use these to compare and budget, not as a quote.
