New Delhi

Aprox. 317,797 habitantesApprox. 317,797 people

New Delhi is India's administrative heart, the planned city the British laid out south of old Mughal Delhi. It's a place of contrasts: the wide, tree-lined avenues Lutyens designed —with India Gate and Rashtrapati Bhavan anchoring Rajpath— sit beside the feverish chaos of Old Delhi, its lanes, the Chandni Chowk bazaar and the great Jama Masjid mosque. It's loud, intense and sometimes exhausting, but it's also one of the most historically alive cities on Earth. Come with patience and a curious stomach.

Mejor épocaBest time

October to March, when the heat eases and it's dry and mild. Avoid May-June (brutal 40 °C+ heat) and the July-August monsoon. Winter brings fog and heavy smog, especially in the mornings.

PresupuestoBudget

Very cheap by Western standards. A backpacker gets by on $600-900/month; street food and dhabas cost little and transport is dirt cheap. High-end hotels in the south do climb, though.

EntradaEntry

India requires a visa for almost all nationalities, but most travelers can apply for the tourist e-Visa online before the trip. Check the official Indian government site well in advance.

The Delhi Metro is clean, extensive and the best way to cross town while dodging traffic. For short hops, autorickshaws via ride apps (Uber/Ola) skip the haggling. Old Delhi is best on foot or by cycle-rickshaw.

Around it, a complex of ruins and the enigmatic iron pillar that never rusts.

India Gate y Rajpath

How much do you need per month in New Delhi?

Delhi is one of the cheapest nomad bases in the world that also has genuinely good internet: ≈US$700 a month gets you a decent life, ≈US$1,600 a comfortable one, in a city where the whole professional world runs in English. It works if you're actually interested in India, if you can handle noise and chaos, and if you work European or Asian hours (India runs on UTC+5:30, so the time zone is brutal for US teams). It does not work from October to January: air pollution those months is bad enough that people who can leave, leave — and that alone rules Delhi out as a twelve-month base.

This is where India surprises you: home fiber (JioFiber, Airtel) delivers 100–300 Mbps for ≈US$10–15 a month, and video calls hold up fine. Mobile is even cheaper — ≈US$4–6 a month for 1.5–2.5 GB per day (not truly unlimited, even if it feels that way), with solid 4G across the city and 5G widely rolled out, so hotspot is a legitimate plan B. Power is the weak link: short summer outages in older areas, and many buildings run on an inverter that keeps the lights and wifi on but NOT the AC. Always ask whether the building has generator power backup before signing, and keep a battery pack for the router. Two real caveats: India blocks sites by court order from time to time, and since the 2022 CERT-In rules several major VPN providers pulled their servers out of the country — your VPN still works, you just may not get an Indian server.

CoworkingCoworking

The coworking scene is large and mature, but it's built for Indian startups and corporate teams rather than passing nomads: expect big offices, a heads-down vibe, and no welcome party. The known chains are 91springboard, Awfis, Innov8 and WeWork India, with locations across Delhi and especially in Gurugram and Noida. A monthly flexible desk runs ≈US$90–180 depending on the location; day passes are cheap, so try two or three before committing. If you'd rather work from cafés, South Delhi is full of specialty coffee shops with decent wifi — Blue Tokai, which started in Delhi, is the safest bet — though many won't love you camping for five hours.

Almost the entire foreign crowd lives in the south of the city, not the historic center. Hauz Khas and Hauz Khas Village is the most nomad-ish: lake, ruins, cafés, bars and nightlife — and, accordingly, noise. Saket and Malviya Nagar are the practical pick: direct metro, lower rents, markets and cinemas, less glamour. Greater Kailash (GK-1 and GK-2) and Defence Colony are the quiet, expensive districts, with handsome houses, excellent neighborhood markets and prices to match. Shahpur Jat and Safdarjung Enclave draw creative types and longer stays, and Vasant Vihar / Vasant Kunj is the diplomatic bubble: comfortable, green, but car-dependent. If your work or your coworking is corporate, plenty of people end up in Gurugram, which technically isn't Delhi anymore.

ComunidadCommunity

Delhi's huge advantage is language: English is a genuine working language, so you're functional from day one without learning Hindi (though a few words open doors and lower prices). Meeting Indians is easy if you plug into the startup circuit, coworkings and cultural events; there are active meetups, a real art scene, and endless festivals. The foreign nomad community, though, is small compared to Goa or Bangalore — most remote workers here are passing through on the way somewhere else. In Spanish, expect very little: there's an Instituto Cervantes and some Latin American community around the embassies, but your social life will be in English.

The air. From late October to January, Delhi's air quality is among the worst in the world — there are days when going for a walk is the equivalent of smoking, and that's not internet hyperbole: schools close and anyone who can leaves. If you come in that season, budget for serious air purifiers at home and at the office, and accept you'll be indoors. The rest of the year has its own moods: May and June clear 45 °C, and the July–September monsoon floods streets and wrecks traffic. On rentals, the local standard is an 11-month contract, a 2–3 month deposit and a broker fee (usually around one month) — negotiate everything, get receipts, and confirm whether electricity and maintenance are billed separately, because they almost always are. Watch your safety at night too, especially if you're a woman traveling solo: take Uber/Ola instead of walking empty streets, and use the metro's women's coach, which works well. And the legal side: India has no digital nomad visa, so people enter on a tourist e-visa (30-day, 1-year and 5-year versions exist, with per-visit stay limits that depend on your nationality) — working remotely on it is a grey area, so check the current rules on the official e-visa site before you book a flight.

Figures in US dollars and approximate, reviewed in September 2026, for one person. Rents move fast in nomad-heavy cities — use these to compare and budget, not as a quote.
