Mysore (officially Mysuru) is the former royal capital of the Maharajas of Mysore, in Karnataka, southern India, on a plateau around 750 metres up that gives it a gentler climate than the plains. It's a city of palaces, silk, sandalwood and gardens, far calmer and more orderly than India's mega-cities. It's famous for its dazzling floodlit palace, Chamundi Hill, its great Dasara festival, and as the cradle of Ashtanga yoga, which draws students worldwide.

Costo de vida nómadaNomad cost of living
¿Cuánto necesitas al mes en Mysore? How much do you need per month in Mysore?
Mysore (Mysuru) works if you want a cheap, calm, orderly base for months of routine: yoga, study, remote work with few distractions, and one of the lowest costs of living you'll find anywhere. It doesn't work if you want nightlife, a big nomad ecosystem, or international flights nearby — the airport is small and almost everything routes through Bangalore, about 2-3 hours away on the new expressway (longer once you hit Bangalore traffic). Home fiber is genuinely good and cheap; street noise, scooter traffic, and the April-May heat are what you pay for it.

Better than you'd expect for an Indian city this size, and absurdly cheap. Home fiber (Jio, Airtel, ACT, BSNL) reaches most residential areas with 100-300 Mbps plans for ≈US$10-14 a month and handles video calls fine; latency to servers in the Americas is high purely because of distance, though it won't sink a meeting. Jio and Airtel 4G coverage is solid citywide with 5G across much of it, so tethering is a real backup at ≈US$4-6 a month. Power cuts do happen: usually short, sometimes scheduled for maintenance, and more frequent in the rainy season — many buildings have an inverter. The real risk, though, isn't the infrastructure but the shared wifi in guesthouses and furnished rooms, which chokes when the building is full: run a speed test in the exact room, at the hour you actually work, before you pay for the month.
CoworkingCoworking
Small, low-key scene: there are a handful of coworking spaces, but none is an institution and the lineup changes year to year, so I won't hand you names that may already have closed — find them once you're there. What does matter: almost none are in Gokulam, so if you live there you'll be riding a scooter to get to one. A flexible monthly desk runs ≈US$50-90, which in local terms isn't cheap: it costs about what a room does. This isn't Chiang Mai or Bangalore. Most long-stay foreigners in Gokulam work from cafés (the neighborhood has several with decent wifi and a Western crowd) or straight from their room on their own fiber, which is far cheaper. For calls, cafés don't cut it in high season — they fill up and they're loud.
Kuvempunagar y Saraswathipuram son residenciales de clase media, lo más barato y lo más local; ahí vives entre vecinos indios, casi sin inglés en la calle, y necesitas scooter sí o sí.Gokulam is the default nomad neighborhood: it's where the ashtanga yoga scene lives, and therefore where the cafés, the classes, the furnished rooms, and nearly every long-stay foreigner are. It's walkable, green, and — for a foreigner in season — can cost twice what the rest of the city does. Jayalakshmipuram (JLB Road), right next to Gokulam and beside the university, is the value play: same quiet feel, five minutes by scooter from all of the above, noticeably lower rents. Vijayanagar is the newer side: wide streets, modern apartment blocks, malls; more anonymous and less picture-postcard India, but comfortable if you want a decent flat without the foreigner markup. Kuvempunagar and Saraswathipuram are middle-class residential, the cheapest and most local; you live among Indian neighbors, hear almost no English on the street, and you'll absolutely need a scooter.
ComunidadCommunity
Mysore's foreign community is almost entirely yoga people and almost entirely in Gokulam, and it follows the practice calendar: roughly from October-November to March the neighborhood is full of long-stayers and you'll meet half of them in the cafés within a week; in monsoon and summer it empties out and can feel very lonely. There are Spanish speakers (Mexicans, Argentines, Spaniards) but in small rotating groups, not a stable community that will still be there next year. Tech or nomad meetups basically don't exist — for that people head up to Bangalore. Day to day, English covers everything formal: cafés, hospitals, paperwork, rentals. But the street language is Kannada, and Hindi helps far less than you'd think in Karnataka. Learning four phrases of Kannada opens doors out of all proportion to the effort.
The big one first: India has no digital nomad visa. You come in on a tourist e-visa or a tourist visa, and working remotely on it sits in a gray zone. The e-visa does explicitly allow attending a short-duration yoga programme — which is exactly what brings half of Gokulam here — but it can't be extended or converted inside the country, and the maximum days per stay vary by nationality: confirm the current limit for your passport before you book. If you end up staying past 180 days on a different visa, FRRO registration is mandatory. Indian immigration is strict, and there's none of the border-run flexibility you'd use in Southeast Asia. Second, the season: from October-November to March, Gokulam rents inflate on yogi demand, landlords want a cash deposit and an eleven-month agreement (the Indian standard), and there's a "foreigner price" you're expected to negotiate. Add Dasara, in September-October: the city fills with Indian visitors, accommodation spikes, and getting around the center is hopeless — beautiful to witness, terrible timing for moving in. Third, weather: Mysore sits at ~770 m and its reputation for mild climate is earned, but April and May bite (mid-30s °C — budget for a fan or AC), and June to September brings rain and flooded streets, though the monsoon here is gentler than on the Karnataka coast. Then the daily stuff: scooter traffic is chaotic and riding one without prior experience is the single biggest real risk of your stay — wear an actual helmet, not a decorative one; autorickshaws resist the meter (use apps); alcohol is expensive thanks to Karnataka's taxes, with limited choice and early closing; and your stomach will negotiate with the food for the first few weeks. None of it is a reason not to come — just arrive knowing it.
Figures in US dollars and approximate, reviewed in September 2026, for one person. Rents move fast in nomad-heavy cities — use these to compare and budget, not as a quote.
