Mataram

Aprox. 318,674 habitantesApprox. 318,674 people

Mataram is the capital of Lombok island and of West Nusa Tenggara province, Indonesia, just east of Bali. It's not a postcard city but a real hub: administration, markets, and commerce, with the mix of a Sasak Muslim majority and a strong Hindu-Balinese imprint. Its value is being Lombok's urban gateway: from here you set out for Senggigi beach, the Gili Islands, and the Rinjani volcano. It brings together the old port of Ampenan, the commercial district of Cakranegara, and temples recalling the island's Balinese past.

Lombok's airport is south of the city. For Senggigi you go by car or scooter; to the Gilis you take a boat from Bangsal or Senggigi. Renting a scooter is the norm.

¿Cuánto necesitas al mes en Mataram? How much do you need per month in Mataram?

Mataram isn't a nomad hub: it's Lombok's administrative capital, a real Indonesian city where people work in government offices, not foreigners with laptops. It works if you want rock-bottom cost (≈US$500/month is livable, not miserable), authentic local life, the island's best hospitals and the airport an hour away, and you don't mind being the only foreigner on the block. It doesn't work if you want a nomad community, serious coworking, beach out your front door or nightlife: for that people base in Kuta Lombok or Senggigi and treat Mataram as the place you drive down to for paperwork and shopping.

Mataram has genuine fiber (IndiHome, now part of Telkomsel, is the dominant provider); typical home plans run 20–50 Mbps for ≈US$20–30 a month, plenty for a full day of video calls. Reliability inside the city is acceptable, but count on interruptions: a couple of hours of downtime here and there and PLN power cuts, especially during the rainy season and electrical storms. Telkomsel's 4G is the strongest on the island and works well in Mataram; Indosat and XL are usable but fade as soon as you leave the city. There is some 5G on Lombok (it was pushed out around the Mandalika circuit), but don't assume it in your neighborhood. Practical advice: keep a data SIM as backup and never trust a cheap kos's wifi without testing it yourself before you pay.

CoworkingCoworking

Straight talk: there's barely any actual coworking in Mataram. What exists is cafés with decent wifi and power outlets around the malls and the university area, where you'll work surrounded by Indonesian students, not nomads. Lombok's real coworking spaces are in Kuta on the south coast, ≈1.5 hours away by scooter, where monthly passes typically run ≈US$80–180 depending on hot desk vs. dedicated desk. I won't name places because in Lombok they open and close fast; check in the moment before you count on one. If coworking is non-negotiable for you, your natural base is Kuta, not Mataram.

Cakranegara ("Cakra") is the commercial heart, with a strong Chinese-Indonesian and Balinese presence: markets, food at all hours, workshops and the most competitive prices; noisy, but it's where everything gets sorted. Downtown Mataram, around Jalan Pejanggik and the Jalan Udayana area, is the newest and tidiest part: wide avenues, government offices, malls and rentals in better condition — your best bet if you want fiber without headaches. Ampenan is the old port, with period buildings, more character and low prices, close to the coast though the beach there is no postcard. And Senggigi, ≈30 minutes north along the coast, is where most foreigners who want the sea while staying near the city actually live; pricier than Mataram, far quieter than Kuta.

ComunidadCommunity

Brace for a lonely first few months: Mataram has no nomad scene, no expat meetups and no Spanish-speaking community — you can go weeks without meeting another Latino. Day-to-day life runs in Indonesian and Sasak; English shows up in hotels and with younger people, but for markets, kos rentals and paperwork you'll need basic bahasa Indonesia (it's a friendly language to start, and learning it here changes the experience completely). Locals are warm and curious, so making Indonesian friends is easy if you put in the effort; what's hard is finding peers who work like you do. When you need a dose of foreign community, you drive down to Kuta Lombok for the weekend or catch a boat to the Gilis.

Lombok is not Bali: it's majority Muslim and noticeably more conservative. Alcohol is expensive, discreet and not available everywhere; dress modestly away from the beach, and during Ramadan the whole rhythm of the city shifts. The dawn call to prayer lands around 4:30–5:00 a.m., and many Mataram mosques broadcast long recitations before it through powerful loudspeakers: if you're a light sleeper, ask how close the mosque is BEFORE signing any lease. On leases: the norm here is a one-year contract paid upfront in cash, not month to month; negotiate, and see the place in person. The island is seismically active — the 2018 earthquakes in northern Lombok were devastating and were felt hard in Mataram — so pay attention to how your building is constructed. Climate: hot and humid year-round (≈30–33°C) with a rainy season roughly November to March, potholes that become genuine hazards on a scooter, and dengue spikes; ride in daylight, wear a proper helmet, use repellent. On visas, the tourist VoA/e-VoA gives 30 days extendable once, and an Indonesian remote-worker permit exists with a high income requirement — the rules change often, so confirm the current ones before booking a flight, and be clear that working on a tourist visa isn't permitted. Finally: Mataram's healthcare is the best on the island, but for anything serious the real referral is Bali or Singapore — don't come without insurance.

Figures in US dollars and approximate, reviewed in September 2026, for one person. Rents move fast in nomad-heavy cities — use these to compare and budget, not as a quote.
