Makassar is Sulawesi’s main maritime gateway, former Gowa-Tallo trading center and home to fish dishes and rich soups. In Losari, the central waterfront of promenades, hotels and food stalls, busiest around sunset. Fort Rotterdam provides another concrete reference: a Gowa fort remodeled by the Dutch, with courtyards and museums on Sulawesi history. The traditional harbor and Dutch fort reveal a history more complex than the modern waterfront.

¿Cuánto necesitas al mes en Makassar? How much do you need per month in Makassar?
Makassar works if you want a genuinely cheap base, incredible food, and easy reach to Toraja, Bira and the diving of eastern Indonesia — and you don't mind being the only foreigner on the block. It is not a nomad hub: the coworking scene is tiny, there's no international "nomad life" crowd, and English runs out once you leave the hotels and malls. If you need flawless video calls with Europe, people like you around the corner, and gentle weather, this isn't your city.

IndiHome (Telkom) fiber is the default at home, with the odd private provider in newer towers and gated developments. Entry plans run around 30–50 Mbps, and ≈US$20–30 a month is enough to work on. The headline speed isn't the issue — international routing is: expect high latency to Europe and the Americas, and slowdowns in the evening peak when the whole city gets online. Power cuts happen — not daily, but they happen, and more so in the rainy season — and when the power goes, so does your router: if you live on video calls, keep a battery and mobile data as plan B. 4G coverage is solid across the city and Telkomsel is the most reliable even if it costs more. One more thing, and it applies to all of Indonesia: the regulator blocks sites (Reddit and Vimeo have been on that list for years, along with gambling and porn), so plenty of people just live with a VPN on.
CoworkingCoworking
The scene is minimal: a handful of spaces, many tied to universities or the local startup community, and they open and close fast — so I won't name places that may be gone by the time you land. Ask in local Facebook or Instagram groups when you arrive. A monthly hot desk runs about ≈US$45–90, though with so few options prices swing and you'll want to confirm in person. What Makassar really has is coffee culture: warkop (warung kopi) open till dawn and specialty cafés pouring Toraja beans from the highlands next door. Plenty of people work from them, and it's cheaper and more social than any coworking. Before you settle in, check three things: a plug nearby, wifi that survives a video call, and real air conditioning.
Panakkukang is the most practical area: the commercial and services hub, malls, apartment towers, everything within reach — though with traffic and noise. Tanjung Bunga, south along the coast, is the opposite: newer developments, greener and quieter, pricier, and you'll need a motorbike for everything. Losari and the old Ujung Pandang core, facing the sea around Fort Rotterdam, is the most central and the most packed with street food — loud, but it's where the city actually feels like itself. Tamalanrea, north near Hasanuddin University, is cheap and young with lots of student kos, but it's far from everything and traffic makes you pay for it.
ComunidadCommunity
Hard, if what you want is a nomad community — there isn't one. The foreigners living in Makassar tend to be mining and energy people, NGO staff, English teachers, and divers passing through toward Bira or the eastern islands. Spanish-speaking community: essentially zero. Daily life runs in Indonesian, with Makassarese and Buginese among locals, and functional English only shows up in hotels, malls, and with younger people. The upside is real, though: people are openly curious and hospitable, and a few phrases of bahasa Indonesia get you invitations fast. The meetups that exist (startup, running, photography) are local and in Indonesian, so your social life will be with Makassarese, not with expats.
Heat and humidity all year, no cool season, and heavy rain roughly from November to April that floods streets and freezes traffic for hours. The city moves on motorbikes and the horn is a language: don't rent a room facing a main road if you value sleep. On safety, Makassar has a reputation among Indonesians for begal — late-night motorbike muggings, mostly on the outskirts; daytime is fine, but don't walk around at night with your phone in your hand. It's a majority-Muslim city: during Ramadan many places close during the day, and alcohol is expensive and limited compared to Bali. On rentals, apartments usually want 6 or 12 months paid upfront, while kos are negotiated month to month and come out better in person than online. And visas: the tourist visa/VoA gives you 30 days extendable to 60, and working on it is a grey area; Indonesia introduced a remote-worker visa with a high income requirement (on the order of US$60,000 a year as I write this), but the rules change often — confirm it on the official immigration site before you count on it.
Figures in US dollars and approximate, reviewed in September 2026, for one person. Rents move fast in nomad-heavy cities — use these to compare and budget, not as a quote.
