Madison

Aprox. 248,951 habitantesApprox. 248,951 people

Madison is the capital of Wisconsin and one of the most livable cities in the US Midwest. It's built on an isthmus between Lakes Mendota and Monona, with the State Capitol at one end and the University of Wisconsin-Madison at the other, linked by pedestrian State Street. It's progressive, collegiate, bike-friendly and deeply tied to its lakes and local food: its farmers' market around the Capitol is one of the largest in the US. Genuinely harsh winters and green lakeside summers set the pace.

¿Cuánto necesitas al mes en Madison? How much do you need per month in Madison?

Madison works if you want a calm, safe, walkable US base with flawless internet and you don't mind paying American prices for a city of ~270,000. It is not a nomad hub: it's a university town and state capital where people come for UW-Madison, for Epic or for government work, not to laptop-hop between cafés. If you're budgeting like you would in Latin America or Southeast Asia, it won't stretch here, and the five-month winter weeds a lot of people out before February.

Internet y señalInternet & signal

Aquí no vas a sufrir. You won't suffer here. Fiber covers a good chunk of the city — TDS, which is actually headquartered in Madison, plus AT&T in some areas — with Spectrum cable as the fallback almost everywhere; ≈US$60–80/month gets you 300 Mbps to 1 Gbps and handles video calls all day (symmetrical only where real fiber reaches, not on cable). The network is stable: no scheduled cuts, no rolling blackouts. What does happen a couple of times a year is a snowstorm or high wind knocking power out for a few hours in areas with overhead lines. 5G from all three carriers is solid inside the city and along I-90/94, but it drops off fast once you're out in the county farmland.

CoworkingCoworking

Small but real scene, propped up by the UW startup ecosystem. The two names that keep coming up are 100state, a community coworking space downtown that has moved locations more than once (check it's still open before counting on it), and StartingBlock Madison, the startup hub on the East Washington corridor; there are also chain offices like Regus if you want something more corporate. Budget ≈US$200–300/month for a hot desk, more for a private office. Plenty of people never pay at all: Madison's Central Library is excellent free workspace, and there are cafés with decent wifi and outlets (Colectivo, Barriques, Ancora). Prices and hours move — confirm when you land.

The isthmus between lakes Mendota and Monona is the walkable part and where you'll want to be without a car: downtown/campus and State Street (UW students and international folks, loud during the semester), plus Tenney-Lapham and the Near East Side around Williamson Street (\"Willy Street\") and Atwood — the nicest area to actually live as an adult, with cafés, the lake and bike paths. Regent/Vilas and Monroe Street are quieter and more family-ish, close to campus without the chaos. The Latino community is concentrated along the Park Street corridor heading south and in Fitchburg; Epic employees tend to live in Verona (where the campus is), Fitchburg or the west side, where a car stops being optional.

ComunidadCommunity

Nomad community: basically none — don't show up expecting to find other remote workers in a coworking space. What does exist is a big international community, but a university one: UW grad students and postdocs, heavily Chinese, Indian and Korean, plus a Latino community that's here for work rather than laptops, mostly on the south side. Meeting people is easy by other routes: the city is genuinely sociable in summer (the Memorial Union Terrace on the lake, the Saturday farmers' market circling the Capitol, rec sports leagues, cycling groups). Daily life runs entirely in English; Spanish gets you around the south side and not much further. In winter social life moves indoors and making new friends gets noticeably harder.

Lo que nadie te diceWhat nobody tells you

Tres cosas. Three things. One: winter is not a joke — five cold months, January nights around −13 °C and plenty below −15 °C, plus snow and ice; if you don't have a plan for that you'll hate this city by February. Two: the rental market revolves around the university calendar — leases are 12 months and half the city moves on the same mid-August weekend, so finding something short-term or furnished outside that cycle is hard and expensive; many landlords also want US credit history and a co-signer, which you won't have on arrival. And three, the big one: the US has no digital nomad visa. ESTA gets you up to 90 days and a B-2 visa usually up to six months, but you cannot work for a US employer on either; staying longer is a conversation with an immigration lawyer, not with a guide. Add that healthcare comes out of your own pocket, and that life beyond the isthmus gets awkward without a car.

Figures in US dollars and approximate, reviewed in September 2026, for one person. Rents move fast in nomad-heavy cities — use these to compare and budget, not as a quote.
