Lieja

Aprox. 182,597 habitantesApprox. 182,597 people

Liège is the big city of French-speaking Wallonia, on the banks of the Meuse in eastern Belgium. For centuries it was a powerful prince-bishopric and later a pillar of the steel and coal industries; today it's a working, slightly rough and very lively city, known for warm, blunt people. It has one of Europe's most famous stairways, the Montagne de Bueren, and a huge Sunday market along the river. The Liège waffle was born here.

¿Cuánto necesitas al mes en Lieja? How much do you need per month in Lieja?

Liège is one of the cheapest bases in Western Europe where you can still afford your own apartment, and it sits right in the middle of the continent: Brussels about an hour by train, Cologne and Aachen close by, Maastricht half an hour. It works if your priority is cheap rent, constant travel around Europe, and you genuinely don't mind grey skies — it's a lively, unpretentious university city with a visibly industrial past. It doesn't work if you want sun, a big nomad scene, or a life lived in English: Belgium's international crowd is in Brussels, daily life here runs in French, and Belgian admin (registering at the commune, long lease contracts) is not built for three-month stays.

Belgium is behind Spain or Portugal on fibre, and the market is close to a duopoly: Proximus (DSL/fibre) and the old Walloon cable network VOO, now owned by Orange. In practice Liège still mostly means coaxial cable: solid download (300 Mbps to 1 Gbps depending on the plan) but weak upload, roughly 20-50 Mbps, which you feel if you push heavy video or stack calls. Real fibre is arriving street by street, not city-wide — check your exact address before signing. It's expensive for what it is, and contracts are typically 12 months, a bad deal if you're staying three. Installation can take a week or two. Mobile 4G/5G coverage is good across the city, no censorship or VPN needed, and the grid is stable — blackouts aren't a thing here. Cafés have wifi, but there's no culture of camping at a table all morning with a laptop; that happens in coworking spaces or the university libraries.

CoworkingCoworking

Precios orientativos: escritorio flexible mensual ≈US$130-180, día suelto ≈US$20-25, oficina privada bastante más. Small but genuine scene, tied more to the Walloon startup ecosystem and the University of Liège than to passing nomads. The most visible spot is La Grand Poste, the old post office building by the Meuse redeveloped into a digital and media hub with workspace and events; there's also VentureLab, ULiège's student-entrepreneur incubator, plus small spaces inside Wallonia's coworking network. Ballpark prices: monthly flex desk ≈US$130-180, day pass ≈US$20-25, private office considerably more. Confirm hours and membership formats when you arrive — these places change format often. Most people working remotely here are Belgians or students rather than international nomads: expect French conversation and far less networking than Lisbon or Medellín.

Outremeuse is the most balanced bet: the island between the Meuse and the Dérivation canal, a working-class neighbourhood with real character, walkable, with a market, local bars and rents below the centre. The Hypercentre (Saint-Paul, the cathedral, around Le Carré) puts everything on foot, but living inside Le Carré itself means signing up for noise from Thursday to Sunday — aim for a street two blocks off. Guillemins, around the Calatrava station, has filled with new buildings and is unbeatable if you take trains often to Brussels, Cologne or Paris, though the area around the station feels empty at night. For quiet, Cointe and Le Laveu up the hill: houses, greenery and views over the city, in exchange for slopes and more reliance on buses. Sainte-Marguerite and the Botanique/Saint-Gilles area are cheap and close to faculties, but quality shifts street by street — walk them after dark before signing anything. One recent change: the city has opened a tram line along the valley axis by the Meuse, so it's worth asking whether an address sits on that route.

ComunidadCommunity

This is a real student city (tens of thousands of them) and that makes meeting people easy: in Liège you socialise in cafés and on terraces, not at meetups. The vibe is open and completely unpretentious — the reputation of Liégeois as warm people is earned. Daily life runs in French and without it you'll miss half of it: young people and the university handle English, but shops, landlords, the commune and neighbours often don't. There's a long-established Italian-origin community from the coal and steel era, and a Spanish one too, though by now second or third generation and French-speaking; Latin Americans are few. The international expat/nomad scene is minimal compared with Brussels, an hour away if you need that circuit. Erasmus circles, language exchanges and sports or hiking groups are usually the most productive way in.

Lo que nadie te diceWhat nobody tells you

Tres avisos serios. Three serious warnings. One, the legal side: Belgium has no digital nomad visa. If you're not an EU citizen you get the 90-days-in-180 Schengen window, full stop; and if you settle in properly you must register at the commune within days of arriving, with police coming by to verify the address. Two, renting: the default Belgian lease runs nine years (a short-term one of up to three exists, but landlords don't always offer it), with a two-month deposit in a blocked account, mandatory lease registration, a move-in inventory (état des lieux) and rent indexed annually; short-term furnished exists, is scarce and is priced accordingly. Watch the "charges": many listings exclude electricity and gas, and a Belgian winter with the heating on genuinely costs. Everything here is paid in euros, so these dollar figures move with the exchange rate. Three, weather and neighbourhood: grey and rain for much of the year, dark before five in December, and several areas (around the station at night, stretches of Saint-Léonard or Sainte-Marguerite) have a reputation for feeling rundown — more opportunistic theft and atmosphere than violence. Le Carré is fun on a Friday and noise at four in the morning if you live there. And if you rent a ground floor near the water, ask about flood zoning: the 2021 floods in the Meuse and Vesdre basins hit hard around here (Angleur, Chênée, the whole valley towards Verviers) and it's still a live issue for insurance and permits.

Figures in US dollars and approximate, reviewed in September 2026, for one person. Rents move fast in nomad-heavy cities — use these to compare and budget, not as a quote.
