Antwerp is Belgium's great port on the river Scheldt and, since the 16th century, the diamond capital of the world: most of the planet's rough diamonds still pass through its diamond quarter beside the central station. It's Rubens's city, with a Gothic cathedral holding his altarpieces, and a fashion-and-design scene that gives it a looser, more creative edge than Brussels. Flemish in language and temperament, it's walkable end to end and serious about its beer.

¿Cuánto necesitas al mes en Amberes? How much do you need per month in Amberes?
Antwerp works if you want a compact, well-run European base where everything is a bike ride away, Brussels is about 45 minutes by train and Amsterdam or Paris a couple of hours. It is not cheap: you're in the eurozone, rent and energy bite, and the winter is genuinely grey and dark (in December it's night before 5pm). Great for people who value infrastructure, cycling, a design scene and good food; bad for anyone chasing sun, Latin American prices or a big Spanish-speaking community.

Belgium has solid, stable home internet — but expensive. In Antwerp the norm is still coax cable (Telenet, the incumbent in Flanders) with plans from 150 Mbps to 1 Gbps down; the weak spot is upload, noticeably lower than download, and it shows on heavy video calls or uploads. Real fiber (Proximus and others) is rolling out and Antwerp is among the priority cities, but it goes street by street — don't assume your address has it, ask before you sign. Budget ≈US$65–80/month for internet alone; short-term furnished places almost always include it. No power cuts, the grid is reliable, no censorship and no need for a VPN. Mobile 4G/5G coverage is strong across the city and on trains (Proximus, Orange, Telenet/Base, plus MVNOs like Mobile Vikings); data is pricier than in Spain or Portugal — count on ≈US$20–30/month for a decent plan. Heads up: getting a new home line installed can take a couple of weeks.
CoworkingCoworking
A small but high-quality scene, closely tied to design, fashion and the port's logistics world. Fosbury & Sons started right here and is the local reference for a beautiful, well-run coworking (also the priciest); The Beacon, in the Eilandje, is the tech, IoT and industrial-startup hub. On top of that you get the international chains (Regus, Spaces) and smaller, more informal neighborhood spaces. Ballpark prices: hot desk ≈US$220–300/month, dedicated desk ≈US$350–500, day pass ≈US$25–30 — they swing a lot between a premium space and a neighborhood one, so ask for the rate card. One cultural warning: Belgian café culture is more social and beer-oriented than laptop-friendly. Plenty of places are fine with it, but don't assume you can park for five hours anywhere — ask, or check whether anyone else is doing it.
Het Zuid (the South) is the classic pick for newcomers: wide 19th-century streets, museums, galleries, restaurants and bars; pricey, but it's where you'll find the most people like you. Eilandje and Nieuw Zuid are the regenerated waterfront areas — new builds, lofts, the MAS museum; comfortable, modern, a bit impersonal and expensive. Zurenborg and Berchem (southeast, across the tracks) is the sweet spot: gorgeous art nouveau houses on Cogels-Osylei, a real neighborhood feel, terraces, and rents that make more sense than the center. Borgerhout is the cheap, multicultural one, mid-gentrification: lots of life, lots of Moroccan and Turkish food, and quality that swings street by street — worth walking it in person before you sign. The historic center and Sint-Andries are well connected but noisy and touristy.
ComunidadCommunity
The street language is Dutch (Flemish), but English is spoken remarkably well in Flanders — you'll handle the bank, the doctor and paperwork in English without drama. There's a solid foreign community thanks to the port, the diamond trade and the Royal Academy of Fine Arts; Meetup and InterNations are consistently active, and the fashion and design scene pulls young people from everywhere. There is a Spanish-speaking community, but it's small — if you want to live in Spanish, Brussels, Madrid or Valencia offer far more. The recurring expat complaint here: Belgians are lovely, but their social circles were locked in back in high school. Meeting people is easy; making real friends takes months. Learning even basic Dutch completely changes how you're treated.
The weather is not a joke: grey and drizzly much of the year, and from November to February it gets dark mid-afternoon — plenty of people do one winter and leave. Rent is the other issue: the standard Belgian residential lease runs 9 years (with exits at 3 and 6), though short leases of up to 3 years exist and that's what you'll be offered; in Flanders the deposit can be 3 months' rent in a blocked account, and almost everything is rented unfurnished, so short-term furnished is a niche with a markup. Stay more than three months and you must register with the municipality (gemeente). Belgium has no digital nomad visa: if you're not from the EU, it's Schengen 90/180, full stop. Winter heating can send your energy bill far above the summer one. On safety, the city is generally calm day and night, but there is drug-trafficking violence tied to the port — explosions and attacks on house fronts in specific areas like Deurne, Merksem, Wilrijk and parts of Borgerhout; it isn't aimed at foreigners and doesn't happen in the tourist center, but ask your landlord about the exact street. Around Central Station and De Coninckplein late at night, skip it. And bikes get stolen constantly: buy a serious lock or lose it.
Figures in US dollars and approximate, reviewed in September 2026, for one person. Rents move fast in nomad-heavy cities — use these to compare and budget, not as a quote.
