Bruselas

Brussels is Belgium's capital and the de facto seat of the European Union, so you'll see suited officials sharing streets with tourists clutching waffles. It's genuinely bilingual: French and Dutch on every sign and metro stop. The heart is the Grand-Place, a square of gilded guild houses that still stuns even after a thousand photos. Around it spreads a medieval tangle of lanes, centuries-old beer halls and museums. It rains often and stays cool most of the year, but the city lives indoors: cafés, beer bars and chocolate shops.

¿Cuánto necesitas al mes en Bruselas? How much do you need per month in Bruselas?

Brussels works if you want a well-connected European base that's cheap *by Western European standards*: rent sits clearly below Amsterdam, Paris or Dublin, English gets you through almost everything, and direct trains reach London, Paris and Amsterdam in a couple of hours. It doesn't work if you're after sun, a cheap-country budget, or a big nomad scene — the foreign crowd here is EU institutions, NATO and corporates, people with contracts and offices, not laptop people on tourist visas. And the obvious catch: Belgium has no digital nomad visa, so non-EU citizens are stuck with the 90-day Schengen limit.

Home internet is fast and stable, though less "fiber" than you'd assume: Belgium lags on fiber-to-the-home and most Brussels flats are still on coaxial cable — which still delivers a real 100–300 Mbps, with 1 Gbps plans available. Providers are Proximus, Telenet and Orange (which absorbed VOO). The downside is price — Belgium is among Western Europe's most expensive countries for telecom, so budget ≈US$55–80/month if internet isn't bundled into your rent (furnished places almost always include it). Mobile: 4G is solid across the city; 5G lags the rest of the country because the Brussels Region enforces much stricter radiation limits than its neighbors, which held up the rollout for years. You'll usually have signal in metro stations; tunnels can drop. No blackouts or scheduled cuts; the real risk is a new line taking days or weeks to install if you land in a flat with no active connection.

CoworkingCoworking

A mature but corporate scene: most spaces are built for consultancies, startups and EU-institution people rather than passing nomads, so they feel more like offices than communities. Names that genuinely exist and have been around for years: Silversquare (several locations, the most corporate), Fosbury & Sons (the good-looking one, in Watermael-Boitsfort) and Betacowork in Etterbeek (the veteran, more of a tech-community vibe — double-check its current address and rates, spaces do move). A monthly hot desk runs ≈US$210–330; private offices, considerably more. There are plenty of cafés with decent wifi in Ixelles and Saint-Gilles and a specialty coffee is about ≈US$4, but laptop-in-café isn't Belgian culture — don't expect Lisbon or Medellín energy.

Si buscas verde y calma y no te importa alejarte, Uccle y Woluwe.Ixelles/Elsene is the safe bet: the Flagey and Châtelain area packs in cafés, terraces, markets and the city's youngest energy, with lots of students and internationals (ULB's main campus is right there). Saint-Gilles/Sint-Gillis is its cheaper, artier sibling around the Parvis and the Barrière: art nouveau houses, bars, a genuinely mixed crowd — just note it slopes down toward Midi station and a few blocks change character after dark. Dansaert / Sainte-Catherine, dead center, is the most walkable and fashionable stretch, with a stronger Flemish presence and the best shops and restaurants — you pay for the location. Etterbeek and the European quarter (Schuman) is where institution workers live: practical, safe, modern buildings, and dead on weekends. If you want green and quiet and don't mind being further out, Uccle and Woluwe.

ComunidadCommunity

It's one of Europe's most international cities: EU institutions, NATO, lobbying and corporates mean more than a third of residents are foreign nationals and English works day to day without drama. There are constant meetups (tech, language exchanges, afterworks, Internations) and the city is small, so you keep bumping into the same faces. The weak spot: much of that crowd has contracted office jobs and rotates out every 2–3 years, and making actual Belgian friends takes longer — the reputation is earned. Street language is French (Brussels is officially bilingual French/Dutch, but French dominates), and while you'll survive in English, basic French changes your life with bureaucracy and neighbors. There's a Spanish-speaking community, Spanish and Latin American, but it's low-key compared to London or Madrid.

The weather is warning number one and it's not a joke: grey, drizzly and windy for much of the year, and from mid-November to mid-January it's dark by around 4:40pm. Plenty of people can handle the price but not the winter — and winter heating noticeably inflates your gas bill, since Belgian energy is among Europe's priciest. Second: renting. The standard Belgian lease is 9 years (the famous 3-6-9), though a short lease of up to 3 years exists too; landlords ask for proof of income and a deposit in a blocked account — in the Brussels Region usually 2 months, up to 3 with a bank guarantee — and rents are indexed to inflation every year. Finding something furnished for 3–6 months means paying a premium and competing with a lot of people. Stay over three months and you're required to register with your commune — Belgian bureaucracy is slow and arrives in French or Dutch. Safety: the city is fine overall, but don't linger at night around Bruxelles-Midi and Bruxelles-Nord stations — that area has had genuine drug and violence problems — and watch your bag on the metro, pickpockets are real. Two practical details: almost all shops close on Sundays, and national strikes shut down transport and sometimes the airport for a full day, several times a year.

Figures in US dollars and approximate, reviewed in September 2026, for one person. Rents move fast in nomad-heavy cities — use these to compare and budget, not as a quote.
